Toys your Basenji should not really play with or kill

Basenji Talk
  • Aaaah.. Tillo did this as well!! But he actually killed my bra!! I just bought it!! I have to say.. I didn't really learn from it.. because he can still 'catch' them if he wants too..

  • Oh my didn't you know - underclothes are a favorite toy of basenjis :D

  • Hah. Dallas loves chewing up underwear, clean or dirty, he doesn't seem to have a preference. He does seem to have a preference on brand name though! Whenever he has gotten a hold of a pair of my underwear, it never fails, they are the expensive Victoria's Secret pair. I have lost probably close to $100 in panties over the past year thanks to my little predator! He finally trained me to not keep underwear anywhere that he is able to get to. This means, I went out & bought a special laundry hamper that he is unable to get into! Haha.

  • Glad to see I am not the only one with this problem. Kona will take my bras and go running through the house with them with no regard to visitors being present!!

  • Laundry day is a real challenge in my house! Shaye watches for the clothes to come out of the dryer into the laundry basket for folding, and it's a really fun game for her to try to grab something before I can stop her. Nothing I can say will keep her away from it, and so it becomes a little war - wish it weren't so funny, because it's hard to show my stern face when I'm giggling. And yes, underwear of any kind is her favorite too. I have to shut my bedroom door and fold on the bed to keep her away.

  • Leave it to a Basenji to find your most favorite items and chew the crap out of em!
Bras are the worst but socks….ooohhhhh how they just love socks!

  • Underpants are the worst in this house or anything with a crotch!!!!!

  • These were good for a chuckle. Just wondering Pat - does everyone in your house have to walk around with their legs crossed? I almost pd myself from laughing when I read your post.

  • Pearl really likes sock. Its funny to me, but annoying when trying to dress. Pearl really likes trash, bathroom trash, we have to keep the can up. Yourdogs are beautiful, by the way!

  • Of COURSE it was her favorite one…would a B accept any less? For some unknown reason, they ALWAYS choose the favorite...

  • I have an 'audio file' running in my head….the snap-snap-snap of the head shaking ear pop along with the clap-clap-clap of the bra cups in the process of being shook to death:eek:

Could be a sound track to a full length feature film about 'senji's:D

  • Oh wow..I totally get the underwear thing. Kayah will actually steal any type of clothing…she'll even drag our coats across the floor.

Last I heard, the Breed Club secretaries had more people waiting or wanting pups than were available . You could get on a list for a Basenji next winter but I very much doubt you will find one still unsold. Go to the website of the BCGB, or the Northern Basenji Society as you are in the North and you will find email addresses of the secretaries. They will put you in touch with breeders who may be planning a litter for puppies to become ready to leave the nest in about a year's time. Its a long wait I know, but you have most probably missed the boat for now. You are welcome to post me privately. Good luck!

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

@OchiJE: Only problem, is when she's done playing fetch, she likes to tear them to pieces. Or you could just intervene and remove the toy once she is bored with "fetch". My boy was trained this way (I can't take the credit, his breeder had him for his first three years and she teaches all her Basenjis which toys are "chewable" and which are off limits!). He does not destroy toys, even though I do not put them out of reach. I wouldn't expect a confirmed toy destuffer to change his or her ways, but it can be taught if started early. Otherwise, strict supervision can extend the life of toys, and also increase their "worth" as a reward. Restricted access makes them much more attractive! Here is Perry with two of his "original" toys he has had for seven plus years, and a new one recently acquired. [image: 01perrybirthday2013.jpg]

@phoenix3: Looks like a B to me but i think more of a B mix he looks like he has corse hair Maybe be has the size of a cattledog body and a basenji head :) My Aspen is a cattledog/ terrier mix he has the body of a cattledog {the colors} and the height and face of a terrier heres a pic so u can see the colors of the cattledog well one color anyways :D :D phoenix3 - this is Aspen? I'm so amazed at her spots, because my Daisy has spots like Aspens. We know her mother is pure R/W Basenji and she is thought her other half Beagle. One of her other litter mate moms thought Blue Healer (cattledog). But I subscribed to the Beagle. Daisy could be … Cattle Dog I suppose. She's bigger than Duke now at almost 9 months old. I will show her off soon on "Show Off" forum soon.

Another favorite but to be used sparingly… laser pens. All my dogs love them and the cat (if the dogs would let him) would chase it for hours. But the papillion goes a bit neurotic while playing and that just gets our B- rilled up (it stops looking so much like play and more like dominance behaviors) so it's rarely (if ever) brought out.

lol… Jill, my dog has destroyed TWO talk to me treat balls. I still love them though, they do last at least a few months. My guy has figured out how to get the recorder out though - and how to chew it to bits.
