Toys your Basenji should not really play with or kill

Basenji Talk
  • Our Basenji Roo has a mountain of toys. He has everything from a hard rubber Football,Frisbee, Wobble board, super balls, different Akc stuffed animals, and animals with a bungy cord inside it. In addition to that Walgreens and other stores sell Skinneys which are like stuffed animals without the stuffing but still have squeakers. They come as Rabbits, Skunks, Squirrels, and other various animals.

The other night after we got in bed, Roo our Basenji was in his bed. After we turned out the light, we started to hear Roo with something shaking something vigerously back and forth with his head like Basenji's and other dogs do to kill the prey they catch. At the time we thought it was one of his Skinney's or Bungy animals because he typically does this with them.

This went on for longer than usual and Miranda finally got up and checked and Roo our Basenji had one of her very expensive Victoria Secret Bra's in his mouth just killing the crap out of it. So if you can imagine a Basenji shaking his head back and forth and the Cups of the Bra banging together over and over you will get the picture. We are sure it was great fun for him.
By the way Miranda says it is her favorite one.

That would be "was" one of her favorites…. leave it to a Basenji to find the underware...... gggg

  • Miranda got up in time and no damage was done but now we know Roo really likes Yellow!

  • Aaaah.. Tillo did this as well!! But he actually killed my bra!! I just bought it!! I have to say.. I didn't really learn from it.. because he can still 'catch' them if he wants too..

  • Oh my didn't you know - underclothes are a favorite toy of basenjis :D

  • Hah. Dallas loves chewing up underwear, clean or dirty, he doesn't seem to have a preference. He does seem to have a preference on brand name though! Whenever he has gotten a hold of a pair of my underwear, it never fails, they are the expensive Victoria's Secret pair. I have lost probably close to $100 in panties over the past year thanks to my little predator! He finally trained me to not keep underwear anywhere that he is able to get to. This means, I went out & bought a special laundry hamper that he is unable to get into! Haha.

  • Glad to see I am not the only one with this problem. Kona will take my bras and go running through the house with them with no regard to visitors being present!!

  • Laundry day is a real challenge in my house! Shaye watches for the clothes to come out of the dryer into the laundry basket for folding, and it's a really fun game for her to try to grab something before I can stop her. Nothing I can say will keep her away from it, and so it becomes a little war - wish it weren't so funny, because it's hard to show my stern face when I'm giggling. And yes, underwear of any kind is her favorite too. I have to shut my bedroom door and fold on the bed to keep her away.

  • Leave it to a Basenji to find your most favorite items and chew the crap out of em!
Bras are the worst but socks….ooohhhhh how they just love socks!

  • Underpants are the worst in this house or anything with a crotch!!!!!

  • These were good for a chuckle. Just wondering Pat - does everyone in your house have to walk around with their legs crossed? I almost pd myself from laughing when I read your post.

  • Pearl really likes sock. Its funny to me, but annoying when trying to dress. Pearl really likes trash, bathroom trash, we have to keep the can up. Yourdogs are beautiful, by the way!

  • Of COURSE it was her favorite one…would a B accept any less? For some unknown reason, they ALWAYS choose the favorite...

  • I have an 'audio file' running in my head….the snap-snap-snap of the head shaking ear pop along with the clap-clap-clap of the bra cups in the process of being shook to death:eek:

Could be a sound track to a full length feature film about 'senji's:D

  • Oh wow..I totally get the underwear thing. Kayah will actually steal any type of clothing…she'll even drag our coats across the floor.

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

What a sad story.. Though Imo I do not feel it is entirely the Pitbull's fault.. fault also lies on the owner for not controlling/containing their dog! especially when owning a known aggressive breed like a Pitbull.

I put a dab of butter inside his actual kong. His eyes lit up as soon as he caught the scent of the butter. He's too comical…. :D

The B I am fostering came with a de-stuffed…um...thing (I really couldn't tell you what it once was). When she doesn't get her way she will BAROOOOOO at us as loud as she can and then grab the stuffy and shake, shake, shake it and throw it in our general direction. If she could say "so there', I know she would.

Another favorite but to be used sparingly… laser pens. All my dogs love them and the cat (if the dogs would let him) would chase it for hours. But the papillion goes a bit neurotic while playing and that just gets our B- rilled up (it stops looking so much like play and more like dominance behaviors) so it's rarely (if ever) brought out.
