I may have solved the tissue issue…

Basenji Talk

  • My previous beastie used to distract me by doing something he knew he shouldn'g and then when I was busy with whatever the distraction was, would go and steal the napkin or tissue or whatever. :D

  • Back when we had two B's, one would play fetch or some other form of entertainment as a diversion. Meanwhile, the other would sneak back into the bedroom and dig through the trash.

  • I once saw a show breeder get her basenjis attention in the ring by using a tissue.
    Made me LOL!

  • i love it when they find dirty ones on walks and woof them down as fast as they can.

They disgust me in so many ways

I remember my dog almost got a gross bone or something on a walk, I pulled him a away in time, only to be tricked several days later as he pretended he had to go potty near the area, then instantly doubling back, using the loose length of the leash in the opposite direction, grabbing the gross item and woofing it down. I'm such an idiot!

  • I saw the comment about the dog stealing it from you. Medjai loves to try and get at human food, he has been known to jump the chair and try to take it from the fork and he even tried to take food from my roommates mouth. They really will do anything to get what they want.

I know this is said with love in your heart, and it cracks me up. You are so right, they will snarf things I wouldn't touch with gloves on. And we all worry about what food we feed them? Geeze….......

  • That is so true! Although, thankfully Baroo is not as sneeky as some of your pups!

Yes, but They have the habit of burning unforgettable images in your head, like when or girl found a nest of live pinky baby birds that fell out of a nest in our back yard. Trying to save those babies as she ate them like gummy worms - ALIVE! It's just horrible, but is natures way.

They are just too quick to get something away from them. Our dog has the habit of catching adult birds as well, kills them instantly.

  • Vicks Tissues…thats great! I get so tired fighting with our B over the tissue. I'll have to pick some up! I hope it works

Now if only there was vicks TP. LOL
It would be nice to be able to put the TP back where it belongs instead of ontop of the counter far away from our little guy. :)

  • My guys will dig the tissues out of my pants pockets while I am wearing them. I will be sitting on the couch at night with my B's snuggled up to me and a hand full of tissue in my pocket, cause like everyone else now I have a cold. Felt a little wiggle and look down an my B's got a mouthful of tissue pulled right out of my jean's pockets. Seems to even know which side their on.

  • While my previous beastie would grab tissues and napkins and such, EL D pretty much leaves them alone (:p). However, he does like to rip the handles off paper grocery bags and chew on them. Must be the glue or something.

  • What is it with tissues

Kip has been great with furniture and everything else (apart from the odd shoe or slipper) but he is a demon with tissues, toilet tissue & kitchen roll

Even if they are still wrapped up he finds them and destroys them

  • I think our dogs are trying to tell us they are lacking fiber in their diet in some shape or form.

Kleenex (new and used), Paper Towels, Toilet paper, greeting cards, books (especially ones human toddlers have nibbled on first), cardboard boxes… what are they? Part woodchuck?!

Ladybasenji, where are you in Quebec? Montreal? We have a place in Gatineau (Aylmer sector) and one of my dogs might even be related to yours. You're experiences with your girl remind me so much of my first basenji, about 20 years ago–it gets easier, I swear! Let me know if you'd like help with Lady--they're nothing like labs and will never be "obedient" but there are tricks for training them : D

The article seems to be pretty much old news, a rehash of the DNA study by Ostrander in 2004. I haven't actually seen the article but from what was sent to me, it really is just that info. (I was not nice– went to the Pharoah hounds when the dna study came out to gloat as the study said really NEW breed that simply looks like old one that died out.) I can't find the study, though I have it saved somewhere so here is blurb: http://work.colum.edu/~amiller/dogs.htm That said, someone emailed me to post it and I forgot to. .. The mail said: Pass it along. Everyone needs to see this month's new NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC with the DOG on the cover (one of those Weimerhiners with a POODLE cut glued on!). The topic inside is the GENETICS of dogs and it has some AMAZING stuff about BASENJIS…including a beautiful head photo, a surprising genetic analysis (YES, our dogs are REALLY ancient, and SURPRISE, they are closer to CHOWS then they are to Pharaoh Hounds!!!! AND....OOOPS....Pharaoh Hounds and other "ancient breeds".. REALLY AREN'T!!! They are MODERN DNA dogs, created to LOOK like ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs!!! OURS..however, DO have VERY ancient genes (to the point where our B's are basically strange looking GRAY WOLVES if you look at the gene breakdown. WOW. There is also an amazing side bar full page story about the FOREVER dog and while they call them "no breed at all" (the dogs in African Villages)...well, look at the photo for yourself!!! Seems these dogs are NOT FERAL, but actually just "wild dogs" that have existed on the fringe of human society for Eons now. Part domestic, part wild...(all nuts, as we know) and indeed ancient. This is one edition we ALL need to own.<<<< For a cute interactive map : http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/episodes/dogs-that-changed-the-world/interactive-map-discover-ancient-breeds/1282/

It's a very well-written article and I think it accurately describes the basenji's idiosyncrasies that we all know and love and that the average person would find frustrating. I think the take-home message for those who don't know basenjis is that they should educate themselves more before taking the "plunge". Personally, I was thrilled to see a b/w pictured. My only complaint is that the main cover dog wasn't a basenji!
