Is there a BEST collar for Bs?????

    Hey Everyone,

    So Queen Zola is currently wearing a Martingale collar and a regular flat collar for her ID tags. Both are made of nylon. After about a month of having her, my hubby and I noticed that she now has a red ring around the bottom of her neck, where her collars tend to lie when we walk her. We let her stay naked in the house, but I am concerned about the red ring around her neck. Could it be that the nylon material is irritating for her neck and maybe we need to find a Martingale collar made of another material????? Any ideas??? I like that she has a buckle Martingale, for the convenience of getting it off and on… but the redness around her neck is worrying me.

    This is the collar I have on Congo. It's a Martingale made out of hemp. I absolutely LOVE it. Hemp is a great sturdy, natural material.

    Thanks for sharing the link Suzee! I love those hemp collars…and the Egyptian looking one would look REALLY sharp on Anubis :) Think im going to get one as ive noticed the same thing as Zolas on Anubis' neck. Its a faint red ring around the bottom of his neck. You can see it where the white on him is. I think it has something to do with something in the nylon...maybe the dye used to color them or something? So he stays naked inside and only wears his collar/tags when he goes outside and of course when he goes on walks.

    you're very welcome! if you look through her etsy shop you can find other choices but i agree, the wag like an egytian is stunning on the b's!! make sure you do the upgrade to make it into an martingale. she'll also do a combo matching leash set for a discounted price. if you don't find anything in her shop you like, she can do something custom just message her on etsy or message me and i'll get you in contact with her. :)

    nylon may be harsh on sensitive skin? could be dyes or just the material in itself.

    I use a martingale collar for mine too. I've never seen any marks or itching from it. Maybe the collar is too tight, and does she pull alot? For longer walks I use a harness (since he tends to be a puller), and for shorter walks, I use the collar.

    I have seen dogs have issues depending on the quality of the nylon. I use fleece lined martingales made by some whippet people and have no problems.

    Yep. I also spoke to my BRAT coordinator about this issue, and he says it has something to do with the reaction to the nylon. So….. we are now shopping for new collars. I like the hemp one, and I also found some really cute ones on this site: http://www.2houndsdesign.com/home.php

    My coordinator also suggested that getting a collar that is 1.5 to 2 inches thick can also help. My Zola's collar now is only 5/8ths of an inch, so I am sure that is not helping the situation at all. I don't mind shopping for new collars. This gives me a reason to find her something awesome. Thanks for all of the feedback. If you have any other suggestions for great websites with non-nylon martingales, please post. :)

    www.etsy.com you can search for hemp martingale collars and find some pretty awesome ones, or even get a custom one. you could get a leather martingale if you wanted even. :)

    this was one of the first adult collars i got my B. it is velvet lined for comfort but they are sturdy! had this one collar for three years. it is our everyday collar, i wouldn't go back. and when i can afford more i will get him another from them.

    My breeder swears buy the white pine collars. They are super soft. I have one for Malu. They have a "no slip" design thats very similar to a martingale but I think I like it better.

    I got Malu an earth dog hemp collar a while back. I took it off of him and left it on the table. When I came home later he had eaten almost the entire collar less the metal parts. He's usually not one to eat things that he tears up but i guess the hemp tasted good. No more hemp collars for him.

    I Love these collars, limited slip and soft chock collars available. Someone i know who breeds basenjis loves these collars because they are SO soft she can use them for training puppies. they also come in a few different widths for adults also. I have felt them myself, they are like velvet, and the colours are exquisite and so vibrant! they are super strong too.

    They look like they are made of the same stuff the collars/leads from White Pine are made of. I've had White Pine collar/leads for all of my basenjis for YEARS. They are nice and soft from the get-go (i'm a tactile type of person) and hold up forever - or at least until they get chewed (ZEST). D&J have had theirs for maybe 8 years and they still look great.

    oh - should add that the white pine people have samoyeds and there is no bleed from the collars onto the white coats. and my bearded collie friends have them and swear there is less hair breakage.

    Mine are naked in the house, but they are older and not inclined to leave, even if a gate is left open. We wear Nick Russell Safety-choke, similar in theory to martingale in that it snugs up when the dog pulls. We walk in harnesses, it is safer for their old necks and spines.

    We use beautiful martingales from the dutch site www.halsbanden.com - maybe she ships to the US….     REI Makes a nice pack for dogs. Indy has one but don't clip your leash to it. If you want one you can clip the leash to try a ruffwear. Additionally…watch the weight, remember that water weighs 4lbs per litre so you want to be careful giving them water. We usually have Indy carry his food, treats, a sweater or jacket, and a toy. And then we carry it when he gets tired. We also always make sure that he SEES the treats come out of the pack so he knows he is working for a reason.

    @Jarodkjv: Since someone is always home with the dogs a better choice may be the Playsafe collar, it is designed for daycare type settings. It won't open by itself but it has velcro tabs that can be pulled open easily even if the dogs are tangled up. The advantage would be that you could use it to hold them without worrying about it accidently opening. But it's not really designed to have a leash hooked to it so you would have to put a regular collar on them if you were going to take them out. That looks like a great alternative and I do think I'll give them a try. Although the dogs wear regular collars in the house, we always use martingales or sporn harnesses when we walk them. I found the website interesting and was fascinated by the dog cold weather gear. Don't need it here but it was still fascinating.     This one is a tuffy to say the least :) I think everyone has an opinion on what works & doesn't work for them. And I can honestly tell you that I have tried a number of collars AND leads LOL :D Talk about trial and error. My poor husband is so confused now he's like WHAT COLLAR WHAT LEAD?? In the end we use a martingale leash (simple a martingale collar attached to a 6ft leash) to walk them & at first we used a gentle leader or snoot loop to train to walk nicely. Training them with this takes time & lots of effort. When they go on their extra long (25 ft) exploring walk (I only use this in large field or hiking when I know no one else or no other dogs will be around) I use their harnesses BUT the harness I use attaches to the lead at the top of their backs not in front. So really it's whatever is more effective for you & your dogs. I got all 3 at the All Hounds & I REALLY love their service! They are really nice & helpful. http://www.allhoundsapparel.com Short Story on choke chains: I worked with a trainer who used choke chains & I did not like using this because I nearly choked my little girl to death once while we were attacked by an off leash dog. It was an accident & she was fine but I could have really hurt her. I also think the choke chains have a negative reward for a dog while walking. If they lunge at something…person, dog, squirrel, bird etc...they will choke themselves & associate something negative with that.

    Is this Nick Russell of MastersPride? If so, we have a leather collar that does not slip down the neck and works well with them pulling. I put it high on the neck and Talker and Savannah will stop. But these collars that you posted the pixs looks really nice. Do you have the website?
