Soda is an 11 month old return puppy due to a lifestyle change. He needs constant care at the moment. He was emaciated when he was returned and does not do well in stressful situations at this point. He will need a home where he will get fed three times per day, with walks, limited cage exposure and will need someone home most of the time. He will need to be placed closed to where I live so that I can moniter him (within two hours) and will need to be neutered after he regains some more weight. He is still very skinny at this point, but has gained weight since his return. He will need a stable environment and will only go to a home where I can visit and inspect him. If you would like to e-mail me for more info, please do so at the address above. He gets along with the cat I have, but am not sure about other dogs yet.

Western NY is placement territory as well.

  • Oh Arlene I am so sorry. What lifestyle change? THEY LOST THEIR FREAKING GRASP ON HUMANE TREATMENT? Deep breathes.

Hope you find the perfect home. Wish I were closer.

  • He's a really good boy, very friendly, who loves nothing more than to cuddle. He's rather tall-about 18.5 at this point and ALL legs. Definitely for a pet only. I don't know the specifics because she won't answer my e-mails anymore, but she did return him, so that's the main thing. He has gained about three pounds since coming back three weeks ago, most of it within the first week. I can pretty well leave him out by himself with limited destruction now.

  • OMG - gained 3 pounds! What was he when he returned - skin and bones?

  • Thank God he is now under your care and your watchful eyes.
Those people must have been nuts!

  • He is absolutely adorable. I'm praying for a wonderful new home and family for sweet Soda!

  • Arlene, he looks a lovely boy - a lifestyle change? how often I've heard that story. I'm sorry if I've misjudged them but I can't believe anyone is good if they starve their dogs. So pleased though that he was returned to you and best wishes for his new home (I'm sure that won't be long).

  • Shame on those owners..no excuse for this..

  • I can't say I knew what was going on totally in her mind. A breakup happened and she may have been so emotionally erratic that she didn't notice what was going on. You just never know what's in another person's thoughts.

I did get the vet records and he was at the vets in July, so she did attempt to care for him at some point. You just never get the whole story.

I also updated a little info on the listing.

  • Arlene, I'm so glad you have him back! And glad I don't live close to you, I would be begging for him. When we rescued our Eddie he was 2 years old and weighted 13 pounds (tall and looks good at 30 lbs., now), I know how heartbreaking it is to see one so starved. Soda will look great in no time and I hope you get him to his perfect forever home soon. Hugs to you and Soda

  • Normally, I wouldn't have a problem wanting to place him far away, but he's had two plane trips, and because of suspected issues, I would like him to be placed closer. I don't really want to inspect unless I need to, but, if there is an issue, I would like to be able to see his progress if there isn't any forward movement on these issues. I know he needs to be 'out and about' more and needs more crate training, as well as exposure to different situations, but these need to be tempered over time because of his lack of stress management.

  • Soda from Edmonton? That's disappointing! guess that puppy-date isn't going to happen now, but that explains the unanswered emails…
If he's the same, his vet was Dr. Bear, and attended the puppy class before ours at petsmart. The trainer kept comparing Cricket to him, and she was the delinquent!

  • Aww Soda was from Edmonton? As long as he is in good hands now and is recouping. I understand about the plane rides though. That is a lot of stress on a puppy.

  • Yes, Soda from Edmonton. He is doing pretty well now, but still can't handle stress very well. But he looks 100% better than when he arrived home and his playfullness is just coming out. He still loves cuddles and kisses and is actually very, very good. Isn't destructive, quiet for the most part and isn't prone to outrageous behaviour.

Hopefully brat or camp basenji contacted the owner. More hopefully, the owner contacted the breeder who generally has first right of refusal to take back their puppies.

@dwilliams: Sorry for inconvenience-Updated website profile, accidently lost half while doing so, but her number is HP31186401- I guess My mishap has lead to paperwork being too recent to show up. And meant to respond to this earlier, depends on who they go to and specifics on spade/neuter & AKC 'limited'. Was this a planned breeding? Only reason I ask is that she is pretty young (only 1 1/2yrs) to be bred. And thanks for the AKC number. You might want to send the information to Sally for the pedigree site, since seems she is not there yet. Who is her sire and dam? http://www.pedigrees.zandebasenjis.com/search.html

@bellabasenji: It all boils down to what is better for the (so called)"breeders" wallets!!! UUuuugh… BYB's & millers!!! That is true, a pure for profit breeder is not going to spend money on health testing that is going to cut into their bottom line. They will do as little testing as they can do and still sell puppies. Educating as many people as possible to demand health testing for both parents is the best thing that we can do for the breed. There will always be some who want a puppy "right now" and won't care but the more people we can educate the smaller the market for puppy mill dogs because really most people do want to do the right thing and want a healthy puppy that will be a long lived companion.

Our B went to a family in another state. They have had Bs in the past and really wanted another one. The only home that may not have understood B behavior was the first one with the elderly couple. The family we got him from wanted to keep him but had a child who was allergic. Our daughter wanted to keep him also but could not have a dog where she is living. We have 6 other dogs, and felt we could not give him the attention he deserves. We would have liked to keep him, but believe he will have a better home where he now is. Thank you for your concern. Marilyn

@jmcduff: We were able to pickup Tyson from Kelli and brought him home on Monday. His new buddies Chevy (Tri-female) and Chase (RW-male) are beginning to accept Tyson into our home. Chase has no problem but Chevy is very protective of us and very bitchy toward Tyson. After two days she is getting better. Chase he doesn't care he just goes with the flow. The first night was interesting but we made it through. Our B's sleep in our bed and Chevy wasn't too happy about having to share with Tyson. She doesn't bother him when they are outside together it is mostly inside our house which she is very protective. I have attached a picture of all them together. Ha! Her body language says it all!!! Good luck, and I hope things get better and better! Beautiful dog family there!

Hello Everyone, first of all let me start by I'm truly sorry for not responding back to you sooner ~ I have no computer @ home and the only one I have full access to is the one @ work and work has been hectic lately… any how Yes this is our first litter, both Dam and Sire have all their medical records up to date as far as their vaccinations abd keeping them heart worm free, their both on heartguard and frontline the dam although did get her hips check for hip displasma before we even thought of breeding, The vet said our dam was perfect and should have no problems at the time of birth. as far as the line of basenji's I'm currently looking into that I beleive they are from different lines unless your asking if their related if thats the question the the answer is NO. (the dams face looks more like fox and the sire face is not as pointy)... last but not least the Sire does have show Champion in his immediate line. please write any additional questions. bottom line, I just want to find good homes for the puppies... Take care everyone, Maylin
