Check out Spring Willow Kennels! That's where we got our Basenji, Remus, from Laurie and she was great. She's not far from Cleveland!

@zande I know that I’m lucky to have found him! I hope he feels that he lucked out, too. Actually, I don’t care very much what “mix” he is. I had just never heard of basenjis before my Vet mentioned it. He doesn’t have a long tail - it seems to have been clipped. The barking is only when he hears someone approach my apartment door or if someone comes in that he doesn’t know. I’m working on desensitizing him to the latter. He DOES make noises like the dog in the videos below make & he grooms himself quite a bit. He DOES NOT play with toys. Don’t know if that’s breed specific or just Jack! He also isn’t too active; he’d be happy to sit on my lap or with his face in my arm pit all day!

Cleopatra is 7 years old now. Her job is to press against me to keep me grounded and get me out of dark areas with people. She'll start licking to help me when I start stimming and get shaky. If the depression is bad she comes and sits near me and cries. Some days I can go without her but others she stays near me and goes where I go.

@antigone I didn't "research your pedigree"... I found the woman you said was the breeder. Brat most certainly does NOT prohibit people in apartments, townhouses, cities or anywhere from getting a dog. I'd really hate for someone to read your misinformation and not apply.

You know how they use Dawn dish soap to clean birds covered with oil? What do you think about using it on a basenji? I never have, I saw a commercial a few days ago, for Dawn,and just wondered. It can be used on a lot of things, our quartz countertop in the kitchen included Dawn as an product that could be used on it - no other dish soap was mentioned.

I had a male Basenji that peed like a horse until the day he died at 15 and a half. No matter where he was. And it was kinda nice having a male that wouldn't hike his leg to piss all over things, never marked anything either. Don't complain if your boy doesn't hike to pee. On the other hand, I had 2 Siberian Husky bitches who were TERRIBLE markers, always tried to get it as high as they could. They were both spayed too. One passed away a few years ago, still have the other, and she never marks anymore. -Joanne

Right now is the time she must learn you can check her teeth, look between her toes, check her ears, etc. At some point in life, it may be critical, so training her NOW is important. But it can also be relationship building and fun. :) Mary has one of the easiest to follow sites. You just start working on training so that she comes to see you as the one to guide her. @ktiefen1 You would be correct!! Potty Training eventually came easy because ours is so treat motivated....lol. Basic obedience is a challenge for us......ahe is definitely her own girl....and please dont disturb her sleep. You could lose a limb. ::)))))

Even handler friends tried... nope. Wasn't wasting his energy on stupid sheep. Dining room tables are their natural habitat!

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

@willem_42 Sounds like you are doing everything right, Willem ! I once thought two Basenjis was enough - but then they kept on coming, and eight were no more trouble ! (Just a lot more work and an increased need to remain the Alpha !)

When I was looking for my first basenji over 15 years ago I spent a lot of time on your website and really learned a lot from you even though we’ve never met! I’m in NE Ohio and am on my 4th basenji and I hear your name and see it on a dog here and there. It’s a small world when you have a “rare breed” sometimes ☺️.

You have to change your settings. Or you can upload individual photos with the last icon, the arrow pointing up. Of course, doing a dna test is probably going to give you the most info.

We got him 2 months ago when he was a little over one. Thanks for all the suggestions! I am going to go out for a short time and come back, lengthen the time and also try the crate and Kong. He never goes when we are home so maybe it’s his way of saying if you do not want a mess, don’t leave me alone!!

@elbrant No tizzy... but using someone by name has a tendency to make it sound like you mean them. It was funny, nothing big. I'm pretty sure you are good at saying what you mean and asking for clarification. I'm good with that. :)

I always vary feeding time a bit. It is a trick I learned after the first show with my horse... He was not a happy camper when one of his classes delayed dinner time. Being less rigid with the time and more rigid with a routine has made the time change a non-issue (though the horses have not had to learn to sit, they do have to wait for me to give the 'eat' signal before they get their grain like my b's have to wait for their 'eat' command).

If you google Alabama Rot UK Maps you can see the spread. There have been four instances within 20 miles of me. The main map site sends you to another veterinary website with a better updated map. Correspondents tell me it is pretty wide spread across Europe but I haven't heard of it in USA - not even in Alabama !

I don’t bathe my three very often, they’re outside all the time and sleep in their dog house with hay and a heater when it gets cold, We bathe them when they get muddy at the park.
