Alabama Rot

Basenji Talk
  • The Sunday Telegraph today features Alabama Rot on its front page. There was a scare last year and an increase of cases on the New Forest. So called cos it (allegedly) started in Alabama, its provenance is unknown but people are warned to stay out of the mud when walking dogs and to keep to dry paths - Some chance ! We are warned to wash our dogs feet because the first manifestation is usually cuts or lesions on the feet. Whateveritis spreads to the kidneys, by which time it is usually too late. 80% of dogs who contract the disease, die within a few days.

So far there have been no cases reported in the woods where I run my dogs but as a precaution, I do wash feet because that gives me a chance to check for damage.

Do take care - and not only in UK

  • Scary stuff! We've reportedly had a couple of cases up here but I noticed that there seemed to be a cluster of cases in the South Wales area. Very worrying 😕

  • If you google Alabama Rot UK Maps you can see the spread. There have been four instances within 20 miles of me. The main map site sends you to another veterinary website with a better updated map.

Correspondents tell me it is pretty wide spread across Europe but I haven't heard of it in USA - not even in Alabama !

Hi @Vesna, it’s interesting you say that about the spay. Our tri-color actually just got spayed this week and her coat shed before that. I noticed small amount of black hair growing in where she shed, hopefully it grows back. What phase is your tri-color at? Did this just happen?

We use ones from Rukka. Not sure if they’re available everywhere but they are they best ones we have tried (others always fell off, especially in deep snow). I think having two Velcro closures on each sock has been key. I also prefer the soft shell ones as our B seems to accept them more and they don’t twist as much as the ones with a hard sole. Here are the ones I am referring to: https://rukkapets.com/paw-wear/thermal-shoes-black

My undergraduate degree was in geophysics with a minor in applied math. I name all my Basenjis after Indian mathematicians. My current Basenjis are Madhava of Sangamagrama (Madhava for short) and Bramagupta (Bramagupta for short). They do respond to their "short" names.

Alabama Legislature OKs 3-Year Rabies Vaccinations Birmingham News 5/15/09 http://www.al.com/news/birminghamnews/metro.ssf?/base/news/124237531679290.xml&coll=2 Dogs and cats around Alabama could be howling a sigh of relief soon. The Alabama House of Representatives gave final approval Thursday to a proposed law that allows dog and cat rabies vaccinations once every three years. The bill goes to Gov. Bob Riley for his consideration to sign into law. The bill passed both houses of the Alabama Legislature without a vote against it. "It's something everybody understands," Dixon said.
