Wow, that was pretty awesome of you to take care of the sick pup and bring her back to health! No, my cats are not sphynx. One is your typical house cat and the others are himalayans. We are praying that our next puppy is healthy and normal as we have not had much luck with dogs here lately.

hi Jaberi, Sam and Suzanne, great to have you on board here with us. How lucky to be living in Honolulu. We travel there fairly frequently as I have a friend who lives there - such a beautiful place to take an evening walk with your basenji.

My unmet friend, I always assume folks are just asking/telling about "stuff". I can get conflict at work..so, with doing rescue, I always assume folks have good hearts. Its all good. What else can I do to help you? You just have to ask..

Quick update – She slept "uncurled" yesterday! We've found that she snores quite a bit too. She's been doing great at the dog park and on her walks. She's doing really well with her humans, and she's slowly figuring things out with Bowdu. I think we even have a name for her now. I want to use it a few more days before I'm sure of it. But I guess it's semi-official since we gave the vet her new name when we went in for a checkup last Friday. The vet gave her a clean bill of health, but said her teeth need to be done (not happy about the cost, but I agree! -- next payday). Fanconi DNA test kit arrived yesterday. Gonna swab that up and get it out tomorrow. [image: attachment_p_107652_0_img_5493.jpg]

@renaultf1: My 15mo (Aaliyah) was litter trained. I had no problem transitioning her to outdoors. I initially had 2 litter boxes set up - 1 upstairs (in an xpen with her crate) and 1 downstairs. Almost immediately she preferred to go outside - only ever pooped in the house (in the litter box) once. So I removed the one downstairs and kept the one upstairs until she now longer used it (around 6 mo). There was no confusion at all about going outside - when she was out, she went - especially if on a walk - because of the excitement. I'm in Maine - so it was cold and snowy when she first came home - really, really snowy last winter. She loved being outside and was always the last one to want to come in. I actually credit her not having any care about weather (snow or rain) because she started playing outside at 12 weeks. To this day even if it is pouring she doesn't put up a fuss about going out and is actually excited - unlike my other 2 who go out begrudgingly. Oh, and I used Equine Pine pellets for the litter box. Same as Feline Pine, but can the Equine version can be purchased in 30lb bags at Tractor Supply for about $6 a bag. Maggie is doing much better about going outside. She's using her litter box less and less. We had a ton of rain last night into this morning however, which caused her to use her little box this morning. By the afternoon we had her back outside. She's basically refusing to go out in the rain and stands in the yard with one leg up if it is even a little bit moist. We are using corn cob bedding as she was the only one in the litter who had a reaction to the pine bedding. I guess I'll keep the litter box around for rainy days. :-)

I looked on the BCOA website, but do not see them on there. I am sure quite a few people on this forum know them, though. I actually contacted somebody with BRAT initially to look into getting a tri, and my process went through a few different breeders before finding the ones out of Oregon. After many phone conversations, exchanged emails, and pictures, we met her halfway, because she, nor my husband and I, agreed to "shipping" the dog. We have all kept a close relationship, and I know she keeps in very close contact with other Basenji breeders, and is very involved with dog shows. Tika comes from a long line of champions - but the only showing she does is her own prancing around at the dog parks!

Thank you so much for the warm welcome words at the Forum! I was very inspirit by my friend Steve, and think about my new puppy basenji. Although I read that basenjii is not for everybody dog, and it may be challenging however I seriously want to find my own Besenjii friend and to give him the name Kovu in honor of my friend's dog. Thanks again for your warm words! Boris

BrandX, How are the pups getting along? I love the X-files reference with B's. They always seem to travel in a different dimension than most other creatures and the truth is always over the next rise! Have great fun

Aahley, if your boyfriend didn't check to see if the pups parents were fanconi tested, I believe you will want to get your pup checked asap. It will help you know what you will be in for in the future.

@Phoenix44: Thanks for the warm welcome! I received Kaya when she was 8 weeks. She is usually mouthy during all play; I usually cannot pet her unless she is preoccupied with a toy (which I try to supply a lot of). I've tried the yelping, walking away, gently putting my finger underneath her tongue, water bottle spay…. pretty much every little trick (except hitting/yelling of course). I'm now working more on the positive reinforcement for stopping or being gentle. She shouldn't be too tired as I have a pretty good crate training schedule. I am hoping that this puppy class will help a little with the bite inhibition with the other pups. I will also contact the breeder (thanks tanza) this week and ask some questions. Thanks again for everything!! In puppy class, they really don't get that much time for interacting for learning bite inhibition. I would maybe guess she was removed from the litter to young to have learned this from her littermates or any other adults, like her Mom. It take time and lots of patience to teach "soft bite".. or no mouthing… and also a tired Basenji is a good Basenji. How much time is she spending in a crate? There are lots of threads on this Forum about puppies and play biting. You didn't comment about Fanconi testing? Were the Sire and Dam of your puppy tested?

You may be quite surprised to find just how many people in Scotland have Basenjis - I'm sure the rest of them on the forum will be introducing themselves too! What is the breeding of your Basenji?
