I;m hoping to schedule the trainer to come to our home at least for an initial evaluation but I must be honest. We really do get carried away and at times we treat Champ like a real baby so I hope we can handle the training. I wanted to ask any of the B owner's out there….Is there anything I should look for in a trainer to make sure he is using the right methods and won't make matter's worse?

Although I have no words of advise I do want to commend you for trying your best to give Maddy Keller a chance to have a home. I wish you the best of luck in finding her a new home.

My response to the clicker question is this - my basenji caught on to the clicker faster than my lab, but she gets bored and distracted quickly, so sessions are usually 5 minutes maximum. For the general obedience-type command like sit, I used the basenji's "what's in it for me" trait and taught her that if she wants in or out of the door she must sit first. If she wants to eat, she must sit AND give me space while prepping the food. She is smart with the clicker and offers so many behaviors that it is a chalenge for me, the trainer, to focus on one behavior to reward. That being said, any trouble I may be having could be due to novice clicker abilities. Good Luck

Katie is a cutie!!! She looks basenji too. Mine is a basenji/whippet mix and she resembles the basenji physically and her personality is all basenji. Welcome to the forum. This is a wonderful site, I hope you like it!

Thank you everyone for the encouragement and advice. I want to make showing this puppy fun, for both of us and not stressful, at all these people are way too serious.. shw was wiggeling because she had to poop, and so she did it in the class I handed her off to a spectator, laughed and wiped up the mess, and went on with the class.. she was much better behaved heck!! she had to go and you know the opld saying if you have to go then go!! I am going to take Zaharah to the park, as soon as the snow is gone, and the weather gets better.. we can have such fun there.. I am not going to push her, we are not a serious breed, and as long as there are people who are as kind and sweet as everyone here has been, I will survive the antics, and laugh along with you and me.. Thanks again for your great support..God, Doberman people are not like you all none of them.. thank goodness I changed breeds.. I think I am in for some fun…

Thank you! There are some better pics of Daisy that I'll post later in the Show Off thread. Daisy is so soft, sweet and delicate. I don't know how she is still in one piece around Duke. He must be gentler than it looks with his teeth and jaws. Scarey!

Thanks to all for the warm welcome of basenji owners! We're taking a year off of dog ownership to welcome a foster kid. Actually, we would have liked to foster earlier but our basenji boy was not especially fond of kids, and running activity tended to result in him biting someone in the hiney! Our kids, grown now, will definately be basenji owners someday. Don't know whether my husband and I will or not – we loved Rosco but know we got a good basenji, and don't know if we're ready to lose another room full of furniture to break in a new one! Ha!

Welcome!! I would also add that Basenjis are high energy dogs…umm so good luck having them "calm" down :) But if you exercise them often they will come home to sleep! Which is great down time for you. They will also do these wild sprints around your house/yard/wherver there's space!! We call it the "Basenji 500" because it's JUST as fast as the Daytona 500 or the Indy 500 :)
