Registered verses Call

My basenji's name is Noel. My daugher named her that because she is a christmas puppy. I"m not sure what the "formal" registered name should be? Does it matter? How do you go about figuring that out. She isn't going to be shown, she is going to be our newest family member.

This is something that is normally discussed with the breeder before the puppy goes home. Many breeders will have specific requirements about using their kennel name in the registered name and will let you know if they have a theme for the litter.

I've got a question on the topic. Are you able to change registered names after registration?

My breeder gave me the registration info but didn't mention anything about the name? Is there a specific amount of time you have to get them registerd from the time you bring them home?

You have 12 months from the day the litter was registered before you have to pay a penalty.

Yes, but I don't remember the details, it is on the AKC site, here is the link

http://www.akc.org/reg/namingofdog.cfm

The registered name with the kennel name - is a road map or family tree if you will. It allows us to see how we might be related or reminds us of other dogs from that particular kennel.

When you get your puppy - it may not have a registered name - BUT I don't know anyone of us involved in the breed that doesn't fill in our kennel name before papers go home. Sometimes breeders may have a theme or a way to identifiy litters like the A litter and the B litter would all have names that start with A or B. It's a way to keep track of where the dog fits in a breeding program.

If the breeder gave you no direction - I would be considered about other things that might have been missed as well.

Indy's real name is "Mata Hauri Indiana Pollard" i.e. Kennel Name _ First _ Last

we call him by MANY names
Indy
Great beast we shall call Deamon
Destroyer of Underpants
Booger
Noodles

my advice take the kennel name put it in the front, then your first name for her "Noel" and your last name.

Sorry, I just got a great chuckle about the names you listed for your pup. So typiical!

We watched our puppy for a week before she finally got her name and all of the family picked something. Jaycee Tag Princess of Wild Spirit. Jaycee my husband says just because I can. Tag was because everthing with a tag she tears it off. She is my little princess. Wild Spirit well that is just her.

Rita Jean

I dont see any reason why the call/ pet name should be the same as the registered name on the pedigree.

only one of my 8 dogs ( including the 2 living with my parents ) carries a part of his registered name as his call name.

Houston

Otis reg. name is Otis von Sverige Spunk,
Von just because, Sverige because where I am from (=sweden in swedish)Spunk, 'cause he is full of it..Silly yes I know but hey why not be silly..? He is also known as

Medjai just got a registered name change. I wanted to give Medjai a registered name that would be long like most of the others, so he is now 'Chaverim's Medjai ben Moshe'. Although I don't know for sure that I'll be getting a pup this season, I have chosen the call name of 'Nailah' for it. Now I just have to get a pup.

So does Medjai's new name have a special meaning?

How did you find the name Nailah?

I love hearing how people come up with their dog's name.

Medjai is egyptian for soldier and Nailah is egyptian for successful.

After these two, If I get more later, I will name them with more hebrew names.

Chaverim is hebrew for friends, and ben moshe, means son of moshe (me). Since Medjai is neutered, and his breeding was quite questionable too, I just made him my kid (hehe).

We did, however, get the DNA tests done on all applicable parties and now know Medjai's real parents.

Cool names…. I like Nailah.... and Medjai's new registered name...

I love the new names…the hebrew is beautiful.

I like the names and their meanings.

Now, I just have to wait to see if there will be a puppy for me this season, and think of my part of the registered name.

The waiting is the worst.
