I Can't Believe My Ears

Basenji Talk

  • School ended late last night and when I came home Chance and Kiya were extra excited to see me. Kiya let out her usual baroo when she saw me followed by her happy dance. For the first time Chance let out two baroos. Well it was more like a "Eeerrrrrooo"
Now this is really exciting since chance has always been mute! He never made a peep for over a year!!!!!!! It brought a tear to my eye. I hope he keeps doing it!:D
It was odd to hear him make a sound…I've never heard anything quite like that. Kiya's baroo's have always been higher pitched but chance's was deep. Hahaha.

  • Congratulations!!! That is fantastic…yay Chance!!! :D :D :D :D :D

Gives me hope that one day I'll hear Brando do it in response to Ruby! So far, all he does is bark (he didn't read the noise section of the basenji manual :D)

  • AHHHHH so cute CHANCE!!! :D

kiro is also a mute. I try so hard to get her to "speak" we dont know any other basenjis so she doesnt have anyone to learn from!!!!

I tried showing her the "B-hennis" off youtube but she just looked at me like i was insane, while i bbbbbbarrrroooed like a real henni!!!!!

she did however, get noisey "cry like" when i kept asking her if she wanted to go to grandmas the other day…..that was a first. It was like she kept saying please please ......

  • I have kinda the same problem… My girl only talks, maybe once a year. I think she is embarrassed by it because she hides her face after she does it. When she does baroo, I give her lots of praise and love and tell her she is very pretty. The new pup talks a lot and I am hoping she will start to follow him

  • Do you do it back to them? Sometimes when ours start a little, if we start doing it back, they will get going for a good couple of minutes.

    .

HAHA! We were doing that too! We showed him a video of a B yodeling with the Godfather and afterwards we started barroooing and yodeling and howling, and he just looks at us like, "what is wrong with you people?" We keep doing it, hoping that he will sing a long….

He just does that yawn thing when he stretches....you know "ooouuuaaaww" and when he thinks we have forgotten that he wants to go outside. But no aaaaawwwwoooooooooooooooooooo! Yet. ;)

That's too funny, our boy does that thing too, and when he thinks we are taking too long to come let him out, he gets louder and louder with his ooouuaaaw! He baroos too though, everytime he sees someone (he doesn't have to know them, in his eyes, everyone is a friend) if they do not acknowledge him right away he baroos at them! He will do it again after an interval if they continue to ignore him. It's short duration, but definitely a baroo. The only person he has not done it for yet is my DH

I don't do it back, but I do it first to try and coax her and show her what I want

  • It is exciting to hear your baby speak.

Our boy became more vocal as he got older and more comfortable with us. We trained him to baroo for his food. We tease him with "Are you hungry?" and he knows its time for feeding. We started getting him to speak by showing him the youtube videos and anytime he barooooed we would say "good speak" and give him a treat. now he responds to the speak command before every feeding and occasionally else where.

    Practice makes perfect!

  • My basenji girl always shows me up.
When I am walking the dogs, folks come over and say "oh, are those the barkless dogs?"
My girl ALWAYS gives one of her warning BARKS when they say this.
    Laugh.
I tell the folks yes, they are barkless, except for my girl!
So, then discussion starts, and I explain how they are not MUTE.
But my girl gets me everytime!

Jayden does the exact same thing. Someone will approach us and ask what kind of dogs we have. When we reply "basenjis", they look at us blankly and so we'll go the next step and say "They are the 'barkless dog'." At that point, Jayden will let out a couple of sharp barks to make us look stupid.

We've never heard Jayden barooo but Cory will if she is excited or happy to see someone. Cory has a much bigger variety of sounds. Jayden has a happy whine, an unhappy whine or screech, and his warning barks. I'd probably faint if he all of a sudden let out a baroo!

  • Mirtillo baroos to people who ignore him (not many do..) and when we play together and he has the toy in his mouth and I'm also holding it, he baroos as well.

Yesterday I got my first real baroo when I stood in the kitchen and called Mirtillo to come. He came and gave a big baroo. Too cute!

  • EL D does the ooouuuaaawww thing sometimes when he gets up and stretches but usually is mute. Once in awhile he'll let out a short "baroo" if I don't let him out of the house quick enough but he's never done the real barooooooooooooo.

That's so funny considering we have the opposite experience. Manny baroooos like crazy at home but when we're in public and we want him to do it, he doesnt. Go figure. They have a mind of their own.

I really believe this helps. Uzie does have separation anxiety and just about 10 min before I leave, I put on a station from Directv that has easy listening. I enjoy it when I am home and do notice that all three of my pups do seem to settle down on their beds and enjoy it! I thank you for posting the link, my girlfriend needs this for her aging Silky who gets so worked up during a storm that he defecates all through the house…..

My 2 will also find things to "get" my attention if they are not the center of my attention, when I get home. I hope you can leave yours out when your gone. it makes things so much easier for everyone.

I'm glad everything turned out alright. A long time ago I remember hearing that and used it once with Dakota. It's hard NOT to chase after them and run in the opposite direction but it really does work. We put up a 4 foot wrought iron fence around the front yard. Mine are pretty good about staying in when the door is opened but I would never totally trust them. Hubby did once leave the door and the gate wide open and all three took off down the block. Luckily a neighbor had his dog out and used him as bait to get our three back.

I think I saw Sophie on a b video website and I was so glad that someone else's B made that noise I showed it to my husband and daughter. Thanks for posting that video because as a new B owner we thought we had some kind of devel dog!!! She does it the most to our oldest dog Josie. There are nights she even does it from under our covers in bed when she hears Josie moving out in the living room. Too Funny!!!!

Oh WOW, you guys are sooooo helpful. Thanks DDS for the link, that was especially helpful. I'm just intrigued with this breed for some reason, and I'm not sure why. Reading what all of you have to say is better that the typical things that you read on the computer. They all just repeat the same thing over and over where as all of you can give me personal experiances. I know all puppies are a lot of hard work, but compared to other dog (which I see some of you have had other breeds) are they actually a lot tougher? All pups like to chew and get into trouble but are they especially hard to train. Lets say with housebreaking and such? Oh and for all of you that have cats too, do they stay out of the kitty box or are the prone to make there way there, if you catch what I'm saying. I read they they are very clean and often times will clean themselves like a cat does. Really? And they are aloof like cats? Soooo much info and I would rather hear all of this from you than get false info. HELP!!
