    Hello everyone,

    I'm looking to switch to home cooked meals with human grade organic food. What recipes are your favorite for feeding your basenji?

    Someone had a recipe for liver cookies, that I used to make for a previous generation, but can't remember the ingredients, apart from the ground liver. The dogs loved it. I am not allowed in the kitchen, so I don't make a mess anymore, but I used to make a soup with ox cheek and lots of mixed soup vegetables, and dried lentils and "stuff". Anything you can eat the Bs will certainly try it, but, like some people, they are not fond of vegetables of the leafy kind.

    My Jessey gets a concoction of ground chicken breast & turkey breasts, mixed with brown rice, chicken broth and a little cheese. He devours it and he's a VERY PICKY eater! :)

    Be careful that they get all the nutrition they need, I believe you can add vitamins to ensure that. One thing to contemplate is that as they get older, they often need medications. So I find out what they are crazy about and then give it very sparingly, this comes in very useful in later life when you have to get medications down them.

    I'm too lazy to cook right, get the right nutrition. It's not as easy as most people tend to think. I've known people who fed their dogs chicken and rice only for years and said they are fine, only to start showing medical issues later. So consider doing a lot of research on balancing the food. There are some that, given breed/age/current weight and health, will do you several recipes.

    Hi Becca. I'm wanting to change foods too. For years I have fed my 2 basenjis on my local butchers meat. But it's mainly offal. And that's worrying me after reading too much offal isn't healthy. I mix with mixed vegs and they love.

    I feed good quality grain free kibble, but I change that source ever few weeks.. I never have to worry about food changes and/or tummy upsets.. they are used to much change. That said, I always feed veggies, fresh, raw, steamed... eggs (same as veggies) raw meat and cooked meat.

    Luckily I'm in Cattle Country, too–I've got a bunch of leads to follow up. Two of my nieghbours have offered to let me graze a steer with their herd, but we don't have a big enough freezer! Most of the stock is non-registered organic, and I'm told many ranchers who raise for the farmer's market will sell heart, tongue & green tripe for a very good price--provided they're not keeping it for their own dogs! @Debra, the Vet was mostly referring to fat and probiotics, and largely in the quality/freshness sense. But Non-medical diets (in Canada, anyway) may list their primary protein source as Duck, but are allowed a certain percentage of "off label" protein--I think it's 20, maybe 30%--and fat can be from ANY source. Duck has been my go-to protein source for years, even more so than fish...but who can afford prescription hypoallergic duck for multiple dogs? As for probiotics, my previous vet wanted me to try a probiotic blend from Nestle, but the additives to make it taste good were pretty much abbatoir rendering sludge. With two sickly puppymill "babies" and an old "Nannydog" I'm at the stage where I'm afraid to feed them Human Grade meat for fear of making them worse...what a world we live in!

    If she only liked "Old Roy", it would be better than not eating! The Diamond sounds like an OK food, especially as she likes it.

    I will just add to what Petra said about finding the steel cut oats. You can find them in the Oatmeal section but also if you grocery store has a bulk section check there. It was significantly cheaper for me to buy from the bulk bins then to get the prepackaged section.

    @Shaye's: Really glad I checked this thread - I've always given Shaye cooked eggs because of the salmonella scare - wow - I'm sure it'll make her eat better if I can just break a whole egg in there from time to time. We have such a fear of raw anything we've never given our dog raw - except for veggies of course. Also the shells are good for them too

    These are not suitable as a diet for a dog but I give them to my dogs once and a while to keep them entertained. A note on by-products….if a person gives their dogs bully sticks, pig ears, rawhide, or cow snouts they are giving their dogs "by-products", ie non-meat but edible parts of an animal. Small amounts of "by-products" will not harm a dog but they are not really appropriate for a "complete diet".
