Scammed by my Basenji

Basenji Talk
  • I think the boys are the worst! Probably hoping you'd rush back to him. Good to hear news from you again, Jennifer.

  • The people who say Basenji are not intelligent do not look at it the way we do. They equate instant, blind obedience with intelligence. In humans, intelligence is measured in problem solving abilities. This is how we see intelligence in our dogs.

  • They are excellent at problem-solving. The humans are usually 'the problem' and most basenjis can manage their humans very well.

  • As mine proved with the original post. snicker

  • Snicker is right - AJ was laughing his head off all the way home :D

  • I've seen more than one bit of proof they "fake it" when they've had enough of something. Mine will lift one paw and walk on three legs when she has had enough of walking someplace she doesn't want to be. Of course, when I check the paw, no nettles, no pickers, no nothing, but she's had her "moment" and is happy to continue at that point.

You are so right. Hugs to the clever AJ.

  • Basenji's are smart in the sense that they can get what they want, and that doesn't include being taught all kinds of silly tricks.
Sometimes Lela and Binti will stay with a person in the park carrying treats. I call them over with my own treat, sometimes over a distance of over 100 yards: they come running to me (I feel very proud!), sit, get my treat and instantly turn around and run off to the other person again, to pick up where they left….

How true is THAT!!! I have had that happen on a number of occasions with Kipawa! It's all about food. And sunshine of course, as Lela and Binti are showing in that lovely picture. And just look at those sweet, adorable, kind, CONNIVING faces!

  • i love this….so very funny1

  • My goodness, what a clever little schemer! I have learned that not much stands between a determined Basenji and his goal. :)

  • They are also very clever at winning people over. My sis, who owns and loves chow chows, just didn't 'get' my excitement when I made plans to get a basenji. At the beginning, she thought Kipawa was cute, but she was still reserved with her feelings. However, she is totally in love with Kipawa now, and he loves her too. And she is now loving the breed itself. If she sees a good basenji picture somewhere, she will post it on facebook. Those basenji faces can just melt our hearts, and that is why the little buggers can get away with so much. :)

@melduff I for one think this is FANTASTIC news! You guys are so lucky! You have a one of kind super dog with the papers to prove it. Walks around the neighborhood and trips to the dog park are going to be very much fun... Friendly neighbor: Oh, she's so cute! What kind of dog is she? You: Thanks you so much. Why, she's a Staffy Chow Lab Rott Russell Husky. (Ya haff ta memorize that) :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:  Thanks a bunch for letting us know. Very much enjoyed your thread.

@weedtrek Possibly Basenji mix, nose looks a bit wider and the eyes are less oval. Could well be a Basenji mix though.

I read your blog and find it kind of confusing and ….. your comment about "messing with ..." hmmmmmmm.... Anyhow, yes, it is so cool when you come across another basenji, because they totally understand each other and how they want to play. We were fortunate once to have another basenji play chase with Kipawa at a dog park. I just don't think there are many basenjis in the Lower Mainland. :(

lol usually when you breed a bigger dog to a smaller dog the Male is the tiny one. Its just dangerous to do it the other way around. As far as DNA breed testing I would go for it if I could. But i am just interested in those kinds of tests. We offer them at our clinic but i haven't ever seen results for them.

My Rue is pretty perfect. She is mixed with something (I don't know what) so she doesn't look like a real B… and she isn't interested in anything in our house (chewing wise), doesn't bolt out the door, and licks like CRAZY! She also doesn't really like to play with other dogs at the dog park, she just smells them, occasionally chases them, then comes back and lays down by me (EXERCISE DANG IT!). The only normal B behaviors that I see in her are the little noises that she makes (she makes a lot of them for different reasons) and her BAROOOOOOO (which is fitting because we named her Rue before we even knew she was a Basenji) and it seems like she is stubborn about sitting. It's like she is saying, "yeah I know you want me to sit, but first I'm gonna spin around in a circle. Then maybe I'll sit if I feel like it." Haha! She is a character!

I have found that if I take my B to doggie daycare (even if it's only for half a day), she is ehausted when I bring her home. She will let me do the dishes without any basenji help! She also tends to treat our doggie friends a little nicer when they come around. Having a worn out basenji is deifinitely worth the $15!!
