    I've seen more than one bit of proof they "fake it" when they've had enough of something. Mine will lift one paw and walk on three legs when she has had enough of walking someplace she doesn't want to be. Of course, when I check the paw, no nettles, no pickers, no nothing, but she's had her "moment" and is happy to continue at that point.

    Basenji's are smart in the sense that they can get what they want, and that doesn't include being taught all kinds of silly tricks.
    Sometimes Lela and Binti will stay with a person in the park carrying treats. I call them over with my own treat, sometimes over a distance of over 100 yards: they come running to me (I feel very proud!), sit, get my treat and instantly turn around and run off to the other person again, to pick up where they left….

    How true is THAT!!! I have had that happen on a number of occasions with Kipawa! It's all about food. And sunshine of course, as Lela and Binti are showing in that lovely picture. And just look at those sweet, adorable, kind, CONNIVING faces!

    They are also very clever at winning people over. My sis, who owns and loves chow chows, just didn't 'get' my excitement when I made plans to get a basenji. At the beginning, she thought Kipawa was cute, but she was still reserved with her feelings. However, she is totally in love with Kipawa now, and he loves her too. And she is now loving the breed itself. If she sees a good basenji picture somewhere, she will post it on facebook. Those basenji faces can just melt our hearts, and that is why the little buggers can get away with so much. :)

As you would know if you had really researched the breed. He will cry and scream but not bark ! No. At least you are asking questions but I really think you should find another breed.

    @melduff I for one think this is FANTASTIC news! You guys are so lucky! You have a one of kind super dog with the papers to prove it. Walks around the neighborhood and trips to the dog park are going to be very much fun... Friendly neighbor: Oh, she's so cute! What kind of dog is she? You: Thanks you so much.     I read your blog and find it kind of confusing and ….. your comment about "messing with ..." hmmmmmmm.... Anyhow, yes, it is so cool when you come across another basenji, because they totally understand each other and how they want to play. We were fortunate once to have another basenji play chase with Kipawa at a dog park. I just don't think there are many basenjis in the Lower Mainland. :(

    Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol

    @phoenix3: Looks like a B to me but i think more of a B mix he looks like he has corse hair Maybe be has the size of a cattledog body and a basenji head :) My Aspen is a cattledog/ terrier mix he has the body of a cattledog {the colors} and the height and face of a terrier heres a pic so u can see the colors of the cattledog well one color anyways :D :D phoenix3 - this is Aspen? I'm so amazed at her spots, because my Daisy has spots like Aspens. We know her mother is pure R/W Basenji and she is thought her other half Beagle. One of her other litter mate moms thought Blue Healer (cattledog). But I subscribed to the Beagle. Daisy could be … Cattle Dog I suppose. She's bigger than Duke now at almost 9 months old. I will show her off soon on "Show Off" forum soon.

    My Rue is pretty perfect. She is mixed with something (I don't know what) so she doesn't look like a real B… and she isn't interested in anything in our house (chewing wise), doesn't bolt out the door, and licks like CRAZY! She also doesn't really like to play with other dogs at the dog park, she just smells them, occasionally chases them, then comes back and lays down by me (EXERCISE DANG IT!). The only normal B behaviors that I see in her are the little noises that she makes (she makes a lot of them for different reasons) and her BAROOOOOOO (which is fitting because we named her Rue before we even knew she was a Basenji) and it seems like she is stubborn about sitting. It's like she is saying, "yeah I know you want me to sit, but first I'm gonna spin around in a circle. Then maybe I'll sit if I feel like it." Haha! She is a character!
