Why Do Puppies Cost So Much?

Breeder Talk
  • I think your 100% on spot Pat, and I will admit that when I meet a client for the first time and the "price" of my services is the first item up for discussion, I know right away its not a good start. (I am a financial advisor)

"""I think what happens many times is that when a person looking for a puppy goes to a "less than responsible" breeder that is only in it for the money, they think "making an offer" comes to mind. Mostly because with these breeders you do not get the impression that these pups and the breeding of these pups are part of their lives, not just a way to get a few bucks""""

Thats exactly what I was trying to say!

Thanks for clearing that up, I also agree with everything else you said

And Therese made some great points too!!! Hopefully that people will pass on this information to their friends looking for a puppy regardless of the breed and how important it is to know your breeder first… and not to make it a snap decision to just get and puppy and "I want it right now". I know that I waited 8 months for my first two... and it was the longest 8 months...gggg... but I will never regret the breeders I went to, one that became my mentors (Leightons/Zuri Basenjis) and the other (Bushbabies) my very close friend and all the people that I have met since!

  • Snap decisions - in my mind those are the times when something is 'on sale' and you want to buy it now. In this day of seeing the word 'sale' on everything (do you really believe it's on sale??!!) we're becoming a society that wants reductions on things, even if it is a living being. How sad.

When you have time to establish a relationship of trust and understanding with a breeder you have chosen, trust me, money is not the issue. What is the issue is knowing you have selected a breeder who cares enough about their pups to not release a pup at just 8 weeks, you've gotten to know a breeder who will be there for you for the life of your basenji and probably well after that, and you can have peace knowing your breeder loves the breed so much that they breed for only a happy and healthy basenji. To me, there is no price for something like that.

This I type with Kipawa on the couch with me, snoring happily.

  • So, the fanconi is on each pups or on the parents or both? I was making some accouints about how much can expect to spent on a future litter.. well here on Mexico.. the people dosnt make hip, eyes or worst.. the fanconi.. but anyway the pups are sell for aprox 400 us.. but there is no explanation about the cost..

I think there is no need to put on the account the food of the parents, electricity and so .. because the parents food are responsible of the owner.. i dont expect that someone pay for the cost to me to have an basenji.. but well there are other cost that i see is ok to include.

It's an OMG all right, but not how you'd think. At first it was blamed on a family members vindictive ex but now I have an update from someone... "Had not heard anything from the woman that was buying the puppy so I telephoned her. Well.... While the puppies were real (lots of real time updates, photos, videos, & talked about them to her friends & family on her personal Facebook page), it looks like the woman that was selling them made up a series of lies because a) did want to deal with shipping a puppy; b) sold it to someone local; d) sold it for more money to someone else; d) who the hell knows. The woman that was the intended buyer who posted all the ads is livid and perplexed. She plans to talk to an attorney friend to make sure it is okay to plaster the seller's name everywhere. The world is full of jerks, jackasses, and idiots. Had a long talk with buyer and told her to only deal with AKC registered breeders in the future. She is lucky she didn't lose any money."

@Chealsie508: I am a born skeptic and although I am not a breeder I would feel uncomfortable placing a puppy into a home when you 1: haven't been able to meet them or 2: haven't been "vetted" by someone you know. It is so easy for a breeder to sell a puppy on a spay/ neuter contract but hard to enforce once the puppy leaves you. People can make themselves seem like exactly what you want until they get what they want. I'm also not a breeder, but have friends who are. And I have seen this equation from the other side, twice as a puppy buyer (in both cases I visited, met the parents of the pups, had conversations with the breeders, etc.) and three times adopting older dogs. On one occasion the dog was shipped to me from Washington State…...but that was set up between the breeder in Washington who was looking for a home for a returned dog of hers and a breeder I had previously purchased a pup from, and who went with me to pick up the dog at the airport! I think it is best to have personal contact if you can, but you can get a fairly good "feel" for people by talking to them. Internet may work for an initial connection, but I would want telephone contact at the very least. I agree with Chealsie508 that "People can make themselves seem like exactly what you want until they get what they want." My close friend who breeds Pyrenees has had situations that seemed ideal turn out to be anything but, and on other occasions placements that she was a bit concerned about turned out to be just great. When in doubt, going with your instincts may work, but not always. No guarantees, and it is very difficult to enforce contracts once the dog is out of your hands. Once upon a time I thought I might sell a horse or two. Nope. Couldn't do it. Still got 'em, and they will die here. Glad I never bred my bitch! :)

@tanza: I offer a guarantee for life… I will always take back that puppy/adult if necessary. This is not to say that I will "refund" money, because I don't (however each situation is different, so I would never say never). But I will support any of my puppy owners and if I can will help support in the care of that puppy if a problem comes up. There is no breeder that can honestly guarantee that a puppy/dog will not come up with some problem some time in his or her lifetime, so I find and "guarantees" are pretty much a joke when people say you have a 1, 2, 3, whatever amount of time... as a responsible breeder you are in it for life. I offer a lifetime guarantee to take a puppy back. I meant that the guatantee is for 3 years that I will replace or refund a puppy. After the three years i will still take back a puppy at anytime i just wont give them a puppy or a refund. I would always support any puppy throughout its life and would never deny a puppy back into my life. I love dogs and no matter what i am responsible for the dogs that I would produce. I offer lifetime commitment to the owners and the puppies And I didnt realize this. I thought everyone was supposed to have a Guarantee. but i offer a replacement puppy for 3 years. (a partial refund might also be offered in certain instances. then I do not allow a replacement puppy but, like i said, id always take back a puppy.

You can dual register him. Register him with AKC and then use the AKC registration to qualify for CKC registration.

Did you confirm pregnancy? You need to get her to a vet. They will probably need to do x-rays and if an ultrasound is available then ultrasound to check heartbeats for fetal distress.
