    @rugosa LOL on the pig ear. But it's not just a basenji trait. One night it was storming and one of my rotts was fixated on one of the bedroom windows. I looked, there was a toad on the screen! The dog was so intense about wanting to get to it, my daughter went out in the rain and moved it from the window. From then until she died, day or night, I had to let her in the bedroom when it stormed to make sure the once-in-a-lifetime visitor wasn't there. They think more than many people give them credit for.

All dogs take patience and that you be at least as persistent as they are. At her age, she doesn't get the option of "won't allow me to do anything." Without yelling, hitting or rough behavior, you really can turn it all around. Right now is the time she must learn you can check her teeth, look between her toes, check her ears, etc. At some point in life, it may be critical, so training her NOW is important. But it can also be relationship building and fun. :) Mary has one of the easiest to follow sites. You just start working on training so that she comes to see you as the one to guide her.     Okay, that link gave me a book about a Rottweiler. So I kept reading and see Checkmate had a section, but not whole book. Yeah, what a great name!     Markie, I think when adding a basenji to an existing household, it is most important to just get out and visit with lots of breeders and meet their dogs. Some families of basenjis get along great with other dogs and others are not as good. You really just need to be up front about your expectations and do some visits to see how the dogs are. That way you find a breeder with the temperaments you like and they know what you need in a pup and can match the pup with your household.

    So so true Lisa!!! What a difference it makes. The only problem is now I have to convince my family that even though the dogs seem great they are not the same easy going trustworthy dog that their schnauzer is! grrrr

    @Duke: LOL - Me neither! I have heard for years that Vermont is one of the best "must see" Fall color tour places. So, nala121498 . . . If not at your beautiful abode, somewhere that could accomodate many Basenji and their people?? :) Trip of lifetime for me anyway. I just loved the wonderful pics that BBoy posted. You are so gratious and kind to share the pics! Of course - we love pictures. Did I say pictures? :D Yes! Thanks! I'd love to have it here (DH, maybe not!
