New Basenji owners…...Don't be afraid!!!!!

Basenji Talk
  • Dog in picture #2 looks guilty to me! Of course, #1 has more of a "you don't like it? Tough!" expression. :)

  • Ah the joys of fluff. We keep thinking they will learn or grow out of it, yet my 3 yr. old girl still loves to see pillows, couches, comforters, etc. become piles of fluff. We are not alone however. I saw a picture of a couch that was nearly totally fluffed out, with a chihuahua looking out of one of the pillows - he had made himself an igloo and was quite proud of it. Major quality if owning a basenji: Sense of humor!

  • So glad I'm not alone! Lmao

  • Oh dear - this looks oh so familiar!!!

  • better his pillow than yours!

  • I pick #2 ! lol

  • I believe you had a burglar who tried to steal the pillow, and they fought to save it. The pillow was killed in the process. Case closed.

  • @MacPack:

LOL!!! This sounds sooo believeable. I think it is an open and shut case, like you said. They were just trying to 'protect' their property….

  • …by making it too undesirable to steal.

  • I use the fluff/stuffing in my boy's crate as bedding. Arnie would tear up bedding in his crate and destuff it. I once used an old pillow thinking that would work but he chewed a hole in the pillow and pulled out all the stuffing. He did not want to chew on the stuffing though so I use it as bedding. Now I buy it at WalMart for him. My girl Bambi however loves the stuffing and if she is nearby his crate when I open it, she will try to grab some of the fluff and will run with it under the kitchen table and chew it. These are 11 and 9 year old Bs.

  • On a serious note, I realize B's are prone to this kind of funny (?) behaviour, but I'm curious do most of them do this or it just a minority?

I think they probable ALL do it.. And they NEVER grow out of it!!!

I second this answer…....my boy tried to de-stuff my couch once.....

  • Just once…?!!!

  • Not all but I think most do!

  • I would say most do when they are puppies. Whether they continue to do this as adults probably depends on temperament and environment. I have been fortunate in that none of mine have been destructive as adults. My current boy doesn't even get into tissues, and has never destroyed his plush toys. :)

  • My Arnie can strip the outer layer off of a tennis ball and have it be intact and can shred a rope toy in minutes. I found this out when he was younger. My friends B would take the squeaker out of every toy. At the dog shows I would buy the toys without a squeaker at a big discount just for him!

  • My 14 year old girl will usually 'kill' her stuffed toys, and any shoe or purse left within reach may be a victim.
She does not destroy everything or often, but the possibility is there!
The boys only shake their stuffed toys, and toss them around. Nicky is the only 'killer' here. My last pack (5 or them) were not destructive at all.

  • We are lucky to have never had serious damage to our furniture. Our dogs like to destuff EVERY animal and take out all the squeekers. It's funny, the incision they make to get the fluff out is ALWAYS at the throat. Very instinctive dogs, they are. We also have to keep the door to the bathroom closed or else we'd come home to a TP'd apartment!

  • Kiora does that! One one memorable occasion she decided to vomit on the couch and then proceeded to chew a hole into the spot where she threw up, presumably in an attempt to recycle nutrients. Fortunately the couch had been free.

I've been involved with Basenjis for many years and can only remember one occasion where one Basenji was startled by one particular noise ( ice cream mixer van starting up), otherwise they seem completely immune to noises even the loudest ones. Of course there will always be the odd exception.

My parents have a mutt mix with bernese mountain dog. Every time I go to their house and let Medjai out in the back yard, he growls and snaps at him. Medjai quickly warms up and I would simply recommend that you get the dogs outside, on leash in the front yard to meet the B. It's part of the neutral ground thing. Medjai simply tries to take control right away.

My Rue is pretty perfect. She is mixed with something (I don't know what) so she doesn't look like a real B… and she isn't interested in anything in our house (chewing wise), doesn't bolt out the door, and licks like CRAZY! She also doesn't really like to play with other dogs at the dog park, she just smells them, occasionally chases them, then comes back and lays down by me (EXERCISE DANG IT!). The only normal B behaviors that I see in her are the little noises that she makes (she makes a lot of them for different reasons) and her BAROOOOOOO (which is fitting because we named her Rue before we even knew she was a Basenji) and it seems like she is stubborn about sitting. It's like she is saying, "yeah I know you want me to sit, but first I'm gonna spin around in a circle. Then maybe I'll sit if I feel like it." Haha! She is a character!

@Lenora: As some of you may know, Abbey turned the Big 3 on Christmas Day. She has made a few resolutions for 2007 which I think reflect her new maturity. (1.) I will not kiss any more kitties even if they are my cousin, because my nose is still sore from last time. (2.) If given a choice between a bath and going out in the rain, I will choose the rain if I have to tinkle really bad, and going out in the rain may actually delay having to get a bath. (3.) I will not get up from a nap when my mom is taking a shower and knock the ironing board over on my head. (4.) This year I resolve to eat healthier. No more bath sponges, bath scrubbies, socks, catalogs, leaves off the airplane plant, or my Santa's nose. (5.) When my mom has Important Visitors I will not excuse myself from the room and return carrying a bra. This causes my mom to make very loud noises which hurt my ears and makes me ashamed of my little joke for nearly a whole minute. Happy New Year from Abbey and Lenora! I should probably get my own username on this forum, so I'm not continuing to write about my own undergarments & such under my boyfriend's name… My boyfriend's basenji mix loves dirty clothes. Andrew used to have two female roommates, and Bandit would pull their dirty undergarments out, chew the crotches out and leave crotchless panties lieing around in embarassing places. I felt so sorry for them! Another time, he ate the hems off of Andrew's pantlegs. We came home one evening to find something sticking out of Bandit's butt. Upon further investigation, Andrew ended up pulling out two 6" pieces of pant hems from Bandit's rearend. Bandit also loved to dig through Andrew's roommates' bathroom garbage & pull out the really nasty items and eat those. Many a small string has been found dangling from his mouth while trash is strewn about the bathroom floor... Yuck! Carrie
