A good "safety" exercise to practice is a command that tells your dog treats are in the offing, and use it at irregular intervals when you are walking. Combine the command with a total release of pressure on the leash, preferably when your dog has firm tension on said leash. Then if something unexpected happens you have a built in reaction of the dog to look to you for a reward. This won't work if your dog is pursuing a major distraction, but should give you an edge if you have an equipment failure in otherwise neutral conditions. (you can carry this one step further by "accidentally" dropping the leash in a controlled area, or with a light line attached for safety, and practice until the dog turns to you when it feels a total release)
SAFE! Pearl got away from her new home!!!

I shared on FB too but I had to copy and paste the status in order to share it with her photo.
Yeah, I know, i wish it copied the text too. Need to find a better way to do that, perhaps with a lost pet banner or something.

Any more news on Pearl? (fingers crossed)
-
Last I heard, the previous foster mom is driving down to Chicago with one of her basenjis (a boy Pearl really liked) to canvas the area and hopefully create a scent trail to help her to find her way back.

Please keep us posted.

Praying that she is found safe and sound..poor Pearl, so lost and probably scared out of her mind.
-
No news yet. The owners put out a findtoto search so they're hoping to here something from that.
I suggest people look into the site for future reference (but hope you never need to use it), it's a cool approach to get the word out quickly about your lost pet.

This is my worst nightmare. I will send good prayers to all and this little b most of all.

I know. I wish I lived a little closer so I could help. It was 97 F today so I hope she was able to find some shade and water. Pearl was (possibly) a stray before so I'm hoping she is street savvy.

Worse nightmare. I tell adopters to double collar if they MUST walk (ie not a fenced yard) until the dog has a couple of weeks to bond and learn their location; crate if the door has to be opened, etc. Sending prayers.

sending out prayers for a safe return - I can't imagine the anguish of losing a dog!
-
I hate hearing these kinds of stories, and especially about new adoptees… Heartbreaking to imagine the emotional swing from joy to anguish. I hope they are able to get her back soon!
-
Just heard Pearl has been sighted very recently. There is still hope!

Pearl is home! Nicole just called me with the good news! She looks good…just needs a bath. Thanks to everyone who helped search for her. And Special thanks to Karin TarQwyn, the "K9 P.I." who gave invaluable (and free, I believe) advice on how to develop the approach which successfully helped to find her.
