Animal Planet Dogs 101: Basenji Video Clip

Basenji Talk
  • Yay! Thanks for letting us know!
These episodes are much too short though. I would rather an entire episode devoted to one breed. ;)

Question – is it an exaggeration to say the breed was almost "wiped out" by Fanconi in the '80's?

  • That was fun. Too bad they didn't do screaming as well. :| I think folks need to hear all the sounds. Probably didn't want to stress a dog to that point though…you think?

  • To Tanza…When you said Laura's dog would be in the video, I didn't know that Laura was actually going to be IN the video, lol...

  • Great little video - thanks for posting it. I sure would like an Egyptian medallion like the one shown.

  • While I loved the dogs featured I have to ask - where DO they get their information? Lion hunters? Wiped out by fanconi? Bond to only two members? Perhaps if they had not been in a hurry up to get it filmed the info could have been a bit better/realistic.

Best part? Laura saying "down, stay" which lasted less than a nano second just as the narrator said they were independent and aloof. Cracked me up.

    Sex Sex

  • I found it rather amusing how the basenji in the training section took his merry old time doing the sit…it was almost in slow motion.

  • Hm, "hunt lions?" In all my books it states they where used to hunt antelopes, not lions!

  • Maybe they got confused with Ridgebacks.

  • Well, in any case, I'll take it!

I can picture my next Q&A about Gizmo.
    "So what breed is that?"
    "A Basenji."
    "What are they used for?"
    "Hunting LIONS!!"
    "…."

  • @renaultf1:

I didn't either! I love it when she says stay, and the dog immediately pops up…so basenji!

Ha, ha…my thoughts EXACTLY! I was screaming at the computer...OMG...still used by pygmys to hunt lions eh? and good apartment dogs...well...that isn't really the take home message...

  • Not only did/do they not hunt lions now, or ever…they aren't even in the same geographical location on the continent of Africa!!! That is a huge error on the part of Animal Planet, and whoever they got their info from.

  • @Nemo:

I found it rather amusing how the basenji in the training section took his merry old time doing the sit…it was almost in slow motion.

The dog's body language was clearly "I will not, I will not"…oh, o....kay.....

  • I actually didn't like that part. Gizmo too will instantly walk away if I PUSH him down to sit and lay like they did on the video. But if I I give a command he will sit there happily.

The whole bit seemed staged, just to use the "aloof" line. Still funny though.

  • I am so glad I wasn't the only one to balk at the "hunt lion" part..I just knew they got that wrong.
The only thing that worries me about these types of shows is how the more unknowledgeable of people will start looking for these breeds, which will encourage more BYB's and puppymills once again..

  • Wow… they miss the boat on that one... someone now needs to tell my C-Me she can't bark...gggg
And they are Calm?... not if you watch my two... like please they should have had the B-500 on there...

And I agree, they make the Basenji out to be the perfect dog... for any family...NOT

  • @Quercus:

I didn't either! I love it when she says stay, and the dog immediately pops up…so basenji!

That was my favorite part too. =)

  • I have no idea where we first heard it, but I have heard the "hunt lions" thing for years. We think that a pack of basenjis might keep nipping and annoying a lion till it just gave up! Maybe a lion CUB, haha!

  • They actually specifically say that a basenji is good for any family if well-trained…I just don't think "any" basenji is good for any family. Their personalities range so much from what I've heard!

Last night we were at a puppy social and someone asked about Paco's breed, and Chris used the "lions" line, lol. I smacked my forehead and was like "I'm sure that at most, having a pack of them in a village might have discouraged lions from coming near. Everything I've researched says 'helped chase small game into nets'."

edit: found at least one source for the "lion" story: http://www.basenji.org/african/macd6709.htm

@eeeefarm said in Is my dog a Basenji mix?: Genetics is such an interesting subject! And the most understandable book on the subject is Mary Lou Kenworthy's ! Recommended to everyone if it is still available.

First, thank you for the honest evaluation of your situation. Basenjis are dogs that consider who they live wit, to be part of their pack - family. They only chew or destroy things when they are bored, or mad at you. (Yes, I know people will disagree, but I have had basenjis for 25 years and have witnessed this activity. This included one dog jumping on the table, with me sitting 3 feet away, and peeing in a circle, as if saying, "There, take that!”) A young basenji, under say, 8 years, will do this when left alone for so long. (Yes, I know people will disagree, but I have had basenjis for 25 years and have witnessed this activity. This included one dog jumping on the table, with me sitting 3 feet away, and peeing in a circle, as if saying, "There, take that!) You write that you live with 3 roommates. You do not mention if this will change, so I will assume it will not. Personally, I think it is very unkind (to them AND the dog) of you to bring a basenji into this living arrangement. Unless ALL the roommates understand, and agree, to sharing their lives with a dog that will require so much of their time. The tiniest thing left on the floor could be destroyed, and could even harm the dog. Bathroom doors left open? A basenji might not be able to find anything as much fun, grab the toilet paper, and run. Fun, fun, fun!!! For the dog. You are researching enough to show that you are checking really well to see if a basenji will fit into your life. In my opinion, not just yet. Maybe later when your life has settled a bit. Oh, just remembered you mentioning you studying, the dog doing its thing. It might happen, but if the dog thinks your attention should be on him/her, you may not like that something. Best of luck in your studies, and with where ever your life leads you!

My mix is just a little shorter, and there's a similar thread going on here right now. As I say in that one, only DNA can tell you. https://basenjiforums.com/topic/14838/i-know-you-are-tired-of-being-asked/5 -Joanne

My mum has one of these, though a bit different.A good friend of hers, sadly no longer with us of the Taysenji Basenjis brought it back for her when she spent time living in Zambia many years ago. It will be passed down to me when my mum is no longer here as it has sentimental values and I will never be parted with it.

I used to always take Senji with me to the nursing home where my grandmother stayed for 1 1/2 years before she passed away. They allowed people to bring pets in to visit. Senji knew exactly where grandma's room was, even though it was down at the end of the hall. He also liked to jump into bed with grandma's roommate, who was a middle-aged stroke patient. He never got snarky or nippy at any of the other residents. It's like he knew they were old and disabled. The only time he's act up would be when he'd encounter the resident cat. :D
