Agree with tanza, it's not good to overdo pain meds. An animal that doesn't feel the warning signal is far more likely to cause themselves harm. We want to protect them from discomfort, but at times that is absolutely the wrong thing to do.
I really should introduce myself

Hi-
I'm BRAT's Basenji mix coordinator, not that I like the mixes better, but, the mixes need looking out for too. My husband and I have had Basenjis for 20 years and we currently have 3, purebreds, no mixes but all are rescues.

Welcome to the forum Joanne. The Basenji mixes make excellent companions. I had one and she was excellent. Thanks for looking after the mixes!

hi Joanne - you're right. Mixes need our love too. Often mixed dogs (of any kind) are looked down at. Thanks for looking out for them.

Welcome to the forum Joanne.
I look foward to hearing about your Basenjis and your work with BRAT. -
Welcome Joanne..very well put, mixes need love too.
-
Joanne is an angel to these mixes in need.
Glad you found us! -
Glad to see you in the forum. We have one of each; pure Basenji and a Basenji mix - love them both, and the basenji mix is a wonderful dog, we couldn't part with either of them, (well, most of the time.LOL)

Welcome Joanne!

Welcome and many thanks for your work with the 'mixes'. I respect all the wonderful people who do this work.
In the UK we don't have a major rescue problem but don't know about the mixes as our Resue only accepts pure bred (as far as they know). Having said that we don't have many mixes here either. Of course our Basenji population is much smaller than yours so its difficult to compare but this year for instance we've had 2 needing new homes and they were dealt with direct and weren't actually kennelled as Rescues. -
Welcome to the Forums, Joanne. I was one of the people who helped get Billy up to you. My husband and I picked him up from Peggy in Merced, CA and drove him up to Petaluma, CA. He is one of the few adult male basenjis that my male really liked.

Oh, I remember everybody who brought Billy here, I wouldn't forget
Can you believe that was 10 years ago this month, he's 13 now!

It is hard to believe it was that long but my boy Nicky is 12 1/2 now and getting gray. He was just a youngster then.

I remember the web site too, was it called "Billy's Wild Ride"? His BUR run was a record at that time, I think! Welcome, Joanne.

Yes it was, and it's still up: http://basenjis.homestead.com/billy.html
I think that run may still be BRAT's longest.
