Congratulations! Leo is so handsome. Nexa and Leo look like they have always been together, like they belong. Their jackets look warm and comfortable. Very nice pics. :)

The only alcohol Ruby tried, was she licked some red wine out of my glass…did not like it at all. In fact, immediately after she licked it she made a really funny face, stood up straight on her hind legs and started boxing in the air (she was acting a bit drunk because it was so crazy). It was hilarious and my comment to my father, was "if she acts that way after one sip, just think what would happen if she drank the whole glass :D". I've since offered her a sip of red wine and she won't come anywhere near it.

Tucker goes through 3 or more rawhide 'bones' or the flat rolled 'bones' in a week. He loves them and has never had any problems. The vet told me that there's no reason that he can't have them as long as they don't cause him any problems, most of which would be noticable (choking, intestinal blockage, etc). He's never had any problems. I gave him one of those dark colored pig ears once and he bit it once and it shattered into tiny needlelike pieces. Never did that again.

@wizard: I forgot to mention that my previous basenji loved to eat rabbits that he caught and muskrats. (I did my best to get those away from him) Oh. ew. We have found one or two squirrel carcasses in the yard over time, but I'm not sure who's killing them. Gypsy has in her youth, but I'm not sure she has the eyesight or speed for that anymore, so it's probably one of the Basenjis. Grosses me out! I know they'd both like to make lunch out of my cats.

Sahara does the same, she will stick her head through just enough to see you and then helps you get dry by licking. She loves to help out, and will take a bath pretty easy now. Daddy also took her with him to shower and she did good. We have also taken her in our boat with a lifepreserver of course and she liked it ok. Hubby put her in the river with him and she was fine with him. Yea, they do have the sweetest personalities, and we love our Sahara sooooooo much.

my thanks to all of you for your wonderful advice - i will take everything that you all have said into consideration before making a decision - however my wife and i have decided that our grieving over the loss of our 4 year old is not over yet so we are going to delay any decision until we can get past this point - with that in mind, and realizing how difficult these discussions have been for me, i am going to unsubscribe myself from this site until such time as we can come to better terms with our situation - again, my thanks to all of you for trying to help - Manny

I never bother with "diapers" or "panties" for my girls when they are in season. They keep themselves so clean that there is rarely any spotting in the house. If they do spot any, the boys are more than eager to clean the area.

I have flown with a dog of mine several years ago from England to USA. He was on as "extra" cargo. I had to pick him up at JFK and go through customes with the usual paperwork and check him in again at the ticket counter of my airline. I have also worked for a major airline and know that the pets are kept in a separate area and no hazardous items such as liquid oxygen are in the same hold as the animals. Most newer aircraft have that separate cargo holg heated as the air is very cold outside at cruising altitudes. I was extemely nervous and frank;ly scared about the flight but he did great. England has a six month quarantine but you allowed to visit your pet. I do agree with Pat…any way it is a tuff one for you...Good luck...

Sharron, My basenjis came from a family in Owosso Michigan. She is not really a breeder this was her first litter (not sure if she will have anymore puppies she just had her male fixed. She had a litter of five I took two and my son took one so she felt very lucky because that only left two. Although she didn't have any problem getting homes for them Basenjis are hard to find in Michigan.

It's funny how Lillie refuses to go outside in the rain to do her business. Surprise yesterday when it was raining, she spotted the rottweiler who lives down the block. She ran outside on my deck to get a good view of him. Hmm, what's that all about?:) Thankfully, it has stopped raining (at least for awhile) so my husband and son just took Lillie out for a long, long walk. She is so funny! Jodie:)

My Sahara loves Pumpkin Cake, so I have no doubt that she would love the pie. At least Pumpkin is good for them, and that it was not chocolate. I had a piece of Pumpkin Cake from a church fellowship dinner and Sahara spied me eating it so of course she jumped up in my lap. Being the easy one in the house, I had to give her a taste. She loved it and ate more, she likes alot of things that I eat. But I will not give her anything that I think will bother her stomach and definitely not chocolate.

@Vegas: Many people fail "fostering-101". That's not anything new. To be a good foster, you have to send them on their ways. If you keep the dogs, then you will have too many to be a foster. It is hard sometimes. After you foster a bagillion basenjis, you look back, and can remember that you had a few that were just exemplary dogs. Like Mantis says, it takes a lot of effort to be a good foster, and to provide them the socialization that they might need. You need the ability to segregate your house if one doesn't get along with your own dogs. Then, you have to have time for each group individually. All the comments herein from experienced fosters are consistent with my wife's and my experiences with fostering. We wondered to ourselves the first time how we would not get attached to our fosters. However, when you remind yourself how your resident Bs own the house, the fact that there are other very deserving families/people who are ready and willing to provide a good home, and also in many cases how the foster B sometimes feels like a 3rd wheel to the resident B's, makes it a bit easier emotionally to let them go to their forever homes when they are ready. Best of all is getting email updates on their new lives with their families and how they are so happy and blessed with each other. Bottom line: If you are a clean freak, fostering is not for you. If you are always pressed for time on other priorities, fostering is not for you. If you have a hard time managing your own B's behaviors, fostering is not for you. If one or more of your resident B's are incorrigibly territorial, fostering is not for you. If any family members do not care for the unique aspects of Bs, fostering is not for your family, because it truly becomes a family affair whether or not it's intended.

Tucker is a big fan. And he likes the mocrowave kind. Especially the 'movie theatre butter' type that is super bad for you. :) He only gets a few pieces, though.

Basenjis have desires, we have desires to get to work on time. You can feed your b twice a day and do a poop right after they eat. That will help. When it is raining or cold I just throw on my slicker and accept that I will be getting as wet as my B. You may want to try Muttlucks which are great waterproof shoes made for dogs in the water or snow.
