I think they're trying to look legit! Knowing that most "ethical" breeders ask a good amount for our dogs (course mind you we have a lot of money stuck into our dogs prior to the "sale" price). And the fact that we're not into dogs to make money.

A lot of times dogs also mount as a way to initiate play. Most B's hate water and you can use a squirt bottle to get their attention, and possibly stop their mounting. One of my alpha females (until she was recently spayed) used to run around and mount all of my male dogs, she would even follow my service dog around and attempt to mount him when she was in season. Now that was a site! A Basenji trying to mount the head of a Thai Ridgeback. Bruiser would just look at me w/his pleading eyes saying "please help me MOM!" as soon as she was spayed (or came out of season) she would quit. I think she just wanted them to know she was (and still is) boss.

Our B went to a family in another state. They have had Bs in the past and really wanted another one. The only home that may not have understood B behavior was the first one with the elderly couple. The family we got him from wanted to keep him but had a child who was allergic. Our daughter wanted to keep him also but could not have a dog where she is living. We have 6 other dogs, and felt we could not give him the attention he deserves. We would have liked to keep him, but believe he will have a better home where he now is. Thank you for your concern. If funds are an issues, you can do what I used to do before BRAT came along. Find out the vet of the family your placing him with, have the family pay you for your expenses and then take the dog to the new familys vet for the surgery to be fixed. Drop the dog off the day of the surgery and then new owners pu the dog. They get to pay the bill. That makes sure the dog is fixed, sets up a new vet record for the new dog in the family, and you don't have to pay anything out of pocket. Mostly, you know the surgery WILL BE DONE. Thanks for making sure he is fixed before rehoming. That is so important.

His back pasture used to be used for raising miniature goats, so yes the whole thing is fenced with chicken wire all the way around. While that was nice I still had my guy on a hugely long horse lunge line. My little guy knows come.. sometimes, but not well enough for me to trust him completely off-lead in that large of an area, its about..18 acres? Since their youngest boy is too old for 4H projects they sold off the goats and cows. now the field is just used for some hunting. They raise some of their own game birds like cotornix quail and chuckars. And well, the rabbits (wild) are all over that back field. I let my little guy "hunt" a few of them, never let him get one though. and if anyone can let loose their B with a rock solid come, they need to fill us all in. ~Charlene

Are they DNA tested for Fanconi? Or the parents?

Khanis… talk to me about the twins. We just had to put our guy down and I'm looking to add a "young male" to our household. I might even be able to add two if I play my cards right with the hubby... just send some info and I'll see what we can make of it.

I think I might have to start my hunt from scratch. There is a good possibility I will move to Jamaica in the future so I called the customs office yesterday about dog policies. Since there hasn't been rabies on the island in 200 years they are REALLY strict. they only let dogs in from the UK and Ireland. Im soo mad :mad: . . . but I'm glad I found out now. Sooooo does anyone know any UK sources / breeders? ::SIGH:: I want to be an owner so bad

@JazzysMom: I don't know…Keoki's ears look a lot like that when he is uneasy or really chillin' and getting a good butt rub. LOL When Nala's ears are like that, I call it "the Flying Nun" position! He's cute, whatever he is. I hope he finds his 'forever home".

Thank you for the pedigree site I actually was able to look at Trixie's sire and dam!! That was pretty cool!

I live in Culver city and WBL is right, they have no dog pound. They do use the Carson Shelter and I would think a B would have already been rescued from there by Karen from the So Cal Basenji Rescue.

@lvoss: If only the sire had a DNA profile number and not the dam then it most likely means that he is a Frequently Used Sire by AKC's definition and was required to be DNA profiled for his get to continue to be registered. I voluntarily profile all my dogs and with my last litter I also DNA profiled all the puppies before they left my house. As do I… and should be from any responsible breeder

I don't see him listed on the MostlyShepherd link. Perhaps he found a home? I hope he's happy.

@culturalenigma: Hi all…sorry it's taken so long. I did not end up getting a Basenji - though I really really still want one. I did get a Jack Russell. As I said before, my mother breeds them and like any good breeder, when the people who bought her found out they were pregnant, they no longer wanted the puppy. So she was in need of a home and we were looking for a dog. Anyway, anyone know how a Basenji might get a long with a Jack? :cool: I know people with Jack's and Basenjis.. do just find.. but lots of energy there between the two….
