I think they're trying to look legit! Knowing that most "ethical" breeders ask a good amount for our dogs (course mind you we have a lot of money stuck into our dogs prior to the "sale" price). And the fact that we're not into dogs to make money.

RE: Missing You Always Capt. Jack
I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. I know that it's been a while since you posted, but I also know what it's like to lose a companion to cancer, I lost my Kelley (Rhodesian Ridgeback) to bone cancer last November 2007. I then lost my Father to (Prostrate Carcinoma) Bone Cancer July 13, 2008; and I just laid to rest a very wonderful friend of mine named Dwayne who lost his battle w/liver cancer (started as lung cancer) August 26, 2008.
Cancer is extremely painful, sometimes animals (and humans) hide their pain and discomfort from those they love, because they don't want to be treated any different; and they always seem to rally just before they leave this world.
My prayers are with you and your family; even though it as been a while, if you're like me the pain seems to never go away.
RE: Capt. Jack For Sale
A lot of times dogs also mount as a way to initiate play. Most B's hate water and you can use a squirt bottle to get their attention, and possibly stop their mounting. One of my alpha females (until she was recently spayed) used to run around and mount all of my male dogs, she would even follow my service dog around and attempt to mount him when she was in season. Now that was a site! A Basenji trying to mount the head of a Thai Ridgeback. Bruiser would just look at me w/his pleading eyes saying "please help me MOM!" as soon as she was spayed (or came out of season) she would quit. I think she just wanted them to know she was (and still is) boss.
RE: WANTED: R/W Female Basenji puppy/adult.
When she told me 1,500 I was shocked. He's a pretty dog, but I can't afford to pay that kind of money. I want a B but c'mon now.. I'll wait, let me know when you guys will be breeding this year if at all. I would like to know I'm getting from a responsible breeder who doesn't care about charging me a million dollars ;o)
I know of a very nice r/w adult female up for adoption, she's located in Ohio; you can email her foster mum at email@example.com or you can drop me a note Meg can be viewed on Petfinder.com CCK9s New Leash on Life has her bio up; it's a non-kill rescue based out of Ohio.
As for the quote of people thinking the higher price means a better animal…. I bought my Quarter Horse for $600.00 that was cheap in 1992; he was PRICELESS!
RE: Lost Basenji In Michigan
Don't give up hope; I thought one of my other dogs was dead earlier this year, (he's a deaf staffy); he was lost during the week of the blizzard… I said many prayers, and I live in a farming community, w/the help of a wonderful friend, and many prayers Jack made it home safely... a little thin, raw paw pads, but he came home alive (and yes the fence was fixed). I'll keep ya's in my prayers.
Hello from the Pride of the Bluegrass!
I've been in Basenji's going on 13 years, starting w/my foundation bitch, Intl. Ch Quad-K's Special-K, CGC, JC, LCM "Kaytee" a beautiful red and white girl, and well, then came her 5 pups (I kept two of them), Intl. Ch Bellehound's Foolish Heart, JC "Bart" and his little sister Natl. Ch Bellehound's Cigar Charlie, JC "Charlie" (named in honor of my father who loved to smoke cigars), and then I bred her and she whelped a "singleton" named Intl. Ch Bellehound's Christmas Angel, JC "Angel". I then was lucky enough to aquire Kaytee's half sister Quad-K's Nala of the Night "Nala" who only needs a major to finish her AKC championship (wonder if that will ever happend?).
I love all my B's wouldn't part w/any of them for all the money in the world. My dogs also share the farm w/a duck, three farm cats and several other dogs, including another primative breed of dog the Thai Ridgeback… I even have a rescued Basenji/Thai Ridgeback from the streets of Thailand (she's beautiful, looks like a large Basenji) her name is Nala also.... Yea I know you have too many dogs when two of them share the same name; but I didn't name either of them and they knew their names when they came to me... so now I just have two Nala's, and that suits me fine.
I also like to course my dogs and do some obedience, but mostly just enjoy their warm bodies curled up in bed next to me.... there's nothing like a warm Basenji snuggled up next to you on a cold night.... course sometimes, I call them sand bags, as they never want to move over and share the bed w/you.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me. I'm also the President of the Basenji Club of Cincinnati and their Rescue Coordinator too!
RE: Urgent situation in Iowa
I've been in this lady's situation. The law threatening to take your dogs, because of some new dog ordinance.
I can foster all the B's; evaluate them and report which ones can/could be adopted etc… however, I would need help w/getting the dogs spayed, neutered. I'm on a very limited income.
So I'm willing to Foster these Basenjis, provided they get a ride and vaccinated prior to coming to KY. I need to keep my own dogs safe first, as they are my number one concern. I have kennels that they can be in, and I have the time to work w/them to see if any of them are adoptable or not.
Just keep me posted….
Thank God, Dad is in Heaven and can't come and visit and count the number of doggies.
In Loving Memory
