According to a study published in the January 2010 issue of Journal of Comparative Pathology entitled, Age and Long-term Protective Immunity in Dogs and Cats by Dr. Ronald Schultz, et als., "Old dogs and cats rarely die from vaccine-preventable infectious disease, especially when they have been vaccinated and immunized as young adults (i.e. between 16 weeks and 1 year of age). However, young animals do die, often because vaccines were either not given or not given at an appropriate age (e.g. too early in life in the presence of maternally derived antibody [MDA])….... The present study examines the DOI for core viral vaccines in dogs that had not been revaccinated for as long as 9 years. These animals had serum antibody to canine distemper virus (CDV), canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV-2) and canine adenovirus type-1 (CAV-1) at levels considered protective and when challenged with these viruses, the dogs resisted infection and/or disease. Hi, No I am not a doctor, just a head over heels in love with my basenji lady. She is my walking buddy & my lap warmer :) I am going to the Vet today for her thyroid meds…I will keep you'all posted on the results. I so hope those ears turn pink, the rash on her tummy goes away & the eges for her ears stop bleeding. ss

@MacPack: Might your husband be sharing more snacks, now that he is retired and home with her? I know when I am home all day, mine hit on me for treats and I often cave in! I was thinking the same thing. :D AJ is 17", 26 lb, 7 years old. His weight has fluctuated a bit because I've had to change food a couple times and there's always an adjustment. He was on Pinnacle for a long time and I started having a hard time finding it. So I tried him out on Instinct, but he kept having soft movements. Since I can't store canned pumpkin and would be throwing a lot of it away, I put him on Taste of the Wilderness (?) because it's a decent quality, he'll eat it and I can find it in almost any city. I almost always throw a little something on his food…a bit of chicken soup with carrots, gravy, an occasional raw egg, salmon oil squeezed from the capsule...as you can see in his recent photos, his coat is looking pretty good and he's not to awfully overweight. It sounds like your girl gets lots of exercise. It might be time to give hubby the old Stink-Eye when he gives her extras. Three or four pounds overweight can have significant effects on her health. That's about 15% overweight for her...if she's the average height for a Girl B. Keep us posted on her testing... And good luck with Hubby. :D

Hi tanza, dr gonto's has asked me to get a blood gasses test done on my boy ! Just to see where he's at with with his dna test comming back as crrier/affected. I'm doing that this monday!. And then i have to email him the resaults back. He told me that by doing this test he would have a better way of telling what the basenji would need in as of medications'and food diet!.

hi there sorry to hear this but , im going through the same thing right now but my boy hasnt started showing signs yet but he tested carrier/affected, but DR.GONTO WILL TAKE THE TIME TO TALK TO YOU AND THE VETS HE IS A REAL HERO ! I HAVE TALKED TO HIM A FEW TIMES. I'M GOING TO BE EMAILING HIM THIS WEEK WITH MY BOYS VEROUS BLOOD GASSES WORK RESAULTS TO SEE WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE ON HIS FOOD OR MEDICATIONS IF ANY YET!!. AS IM KEEPING MY FINGURS CROSSED! MY BOY'S 3 NOW AND I GOT HIM TEST THANKS TO TANZA AND IVOSS THERE THE ONES THAT HAVE HELPED ME OUT OH, WAIT SHARRONHULSBUT TOO!. Dogs often will vomit yellow bile otherwise known as "empty tummy"…. so spacing out the food or giving a light snack before bed is usually the cure

Thanks for all the input. I'm calling as soon as the vet opens at 8:30 today. The lump doesn't feel like it is attached to the skin. It is more to the side than one of her mammary glands. The timing really concerned me to since it seems to have come up in a day or two. My older dog has fatty tumors and another one of my fosters has cysts and this lump doesn't really feel like any one of those two things. I'll let you know what the vet says. Thanks!

I know you can't know if she was weaned too early, but I have seen other dogs "comfort suckle" their toes or the ear tips of another dog. Does she make nursing motions with her mouth and tongue when falling asleep? We had an orphan calf (years ago) that would seek out the first 2 fingers on any available hand to calm/comfort himself. He did this well into adult hood.

Thank you all so much for your posts, they truly helped me a lot. Being my first puppy, it is nice to be reaffirmed that she is just a puppy and that this is normal puppy behavior…. I will definitely continue with the training and try to be more consistent with my approaches. I truly did not think that this was aggression and I'm sorry for the misleading title post; I guess I was involving my own feelings as it has been a little frustrating to say the least. I see how the other puppies are in puppy class, and then there is little Kaya running around barking/yodeling for the entire hour - She is a little diva. Because the current test is a marker test and not a direct gene test, I don't know how useful the test would be. This is a question you would have to ask directly to the researchers.

silly question, but would a non basenji be able to be tested? I know basenji crosses can be dna tested but what about other breeds? I ask this because in another breed I have there are a number of siblings and a dam who have all passed away with various kidney disorders. Different vets so no uniformity of diagnosis. We are now strip testing the remaining siblings but would be interested if we could rule out fanconi. thanks

Is there anyone out in the New Jersey area (or knows of a site that I can be directed to) who knows of any vets that have knowledge of Basenjis? We have a 4 month old Basenji and our breeder took her to the vet at 8 wks but she hasnt been to one since so I've been looking for a good vet for a standard visit and cant seem to find one who knows about Basenjis (well all the vets Ive talked to, act like they know about them but you can tell they've never had one as a patient ;0 Thanks for the help!

@moetmum: I understood that one of the main reasons dogs come back IND is because there isn't enough DNA to test. I don't think that is correct? This is from the FAQ's at www.basenjihealth.org on Fanconi Testing. I still think you should contact Jon Curby, if you have not already My dog came back indeterminate, what does that mean? Should I re-test? Answer: Our linkage test uses 3 markers (for a total of 6 alleles) to predict Fanconi status and requires that all 3 be in agreement. An indeterminate result means the 3 markers are not in agreement (view sample results) and therefore cannot predict Fanconi status.

@sinbaje: This "tender knot" is a localized reaction to the vaccine. It should go away on its own but can take a while; upwards of 8 weeks or more. Those of us in the vet field consider this "normal" but one has to wonder. I would certainly let your vet know for future references that he had a reaction to the vaccine as the next reaction (if he were to have one) could be more serious (ie hives, swelling, etc). Benadryl would no longer be effective. That said - you could ask your vet about pretreating with benadryl prior to injection to help minimize any possible future reactions. You could give orally an hour or two prior to exam. Talk to your doctor re: proper dosaging and exact timing. Best to just leave it alone and let his body deal with it. To add: Vaccines are given in different areas of the body. The most commonly known is that Rabies is given in the Right Rear. So that if a reaction such as a lump is formed due to the vaccine, the doctor will know which vaccine caused the reaction. It would be safe to give benadryl before each vaccine as to not take a chance but it should be known which vaccine will give a reaction to that animal.

@YodelDogs: If you are positive one parent was a pure Basenji and the other parent was a pure Dachshund then she cannot get Fanconi Syndrome. I'm pleased to hear that. I have a B cross and I was wondering about Fanconi with her.
