  • awwwww . . .
    thanks for sharing

  • What a cute little guy, thanks for sharing.

  • Very handsome boy..

  • Thanks All!

Anyone experience what we call the "devil hour"??? A period of time, usually around 7PM onwards that Shaun just seems determined to get into trouble. He will roam around the house and try to get into everything! We have lots of toys for him to play with, but at this "devil hour" we get panicky when we don't hear him: we just know we have to go find him and find out what havoc he is causing.

We have had puppies before, but nothing like this…

  • Shaun is a cutie! I know what you are talking about - I have a 1.5 year old and an almost 6 mo old at home… I too know that silence, while peaceful, is trouble! LOL

Mine also have periods of time where they are completely unsatisfiable except for naughtiness... An evening walk usually takes the edge off, or an empty paper towel tube or TP tube that they can destroy does the trick. Pain in the butt to clean up, but controlled destruction is better than your puppy getting creative on you - haha!

  • @SeattleMax:

    Thanks All!

It happens with Basenjis when they get bored, or if they just have a lot of energy to burn off. :D

You just need to keep them preoccupied with something to do when they start acting up. Also helps to give them both mental and physical exercise.

  • What an adorable little guy - love the puppy pictures - love the puppies - when someone else has them!

  • Get him into a puppy class..that will help train him and wear him out.
The Evergreen Basenji club has classes. Katie can tell you about them.

  • Fortunately for Shaun he is seldom let alone. In the seven or eight weeks we have had him I think the longest he has been left alone is 2-3 hours. Sherri works three days a week and I work from home.

Both of us are regular walkers so Shaun gets at least two decent walks a day. He also has play dates. He passed a six week course of basic obedience training.

He loves to play and chew on his toys. Thats all regular puppy stuff. Even if he had a full day of activities he still gets these bursts of energy where he will run around the living room, into the kitchen and out into the yard like a mad dervish doing circles. We call it the "Basenji 500."

But he will still have these hour long sneaky periods (usually around 7PM) where he will quietly go hunting for mischief: attacking plants, looking for toilet rolls, rummaging in closets left open, and his favorite: shredding magazine and book covers.

In his "quiet time" periods Shaun is a total comfort seeking couch potato. He loves to cuddle with us humans and he loves soft bedding and pillows etc.

His energy levels seem to be evening out a little more now. When we first got him he was either full of bug eyed energy or sleepy as hell. Alternating between the two extremes was like hitting a switch. One time he was tearing around the living room like a crazy monster, bouncing off the walls, while I watched from the couch. He then launched at me from five feet away, soured through the air and landed on my lap, only to be fast asleep in like two seconds…

  • With that description who could not be in love. sounds so much like my boy I can't stand it. Lovely

  • Put a bell on his collar. :)
Ours will start a 500, or bring us a ball to throw… or they start wrestling with each other. During nice weather, we take them outside. Helps A LOT.

@creambasenji Please start a new topic/thread in Member Introductions when you upload an image of your "cream" basenji. That way, more people will see it. (thanks!)

Hi everyone, Thanks for all of your replies! Rex just had his first vet visit (first with me at least), and he was given a clean bill of health. The vet that I saw also agrees with a lot of you that he looks like a Min Pin more than a Basenji, but he is likely still mixed with something because he's a bit too big to be a pure Min Pin. I've looked at a few DNA Dog Breed tests online, and they seem to range in price and in quality. It seems like some of the cheaper (~$50) tests are fake, but they go all the way up to almost $250 for the higher quality ones. Do any of you have experience with these DNA tests / have a brand you found reputable? I'll be sure to post the results of any of the tests with this forum! Thanks again, and Rex is doing really great in his new home!! [image: 1559586518913-img_3707-resized.jpg] [image: 1559586546977-img_3720-resized.jpg] [image: 1559586568474-img_3708-resized.jpg]

I'm originally from California so that is where we got them. I will have to ask my mom if she knows anything about their breeding. They were both over a year old when they came to us. The male was an escaper. My parents had to add an extention on our 6 ft wall because he would jump it. Even then he found a way to get out. We couldnt figure it out for the longest time how he did it. He had found a window upstairs that didn't latch, he would nose it open get on the roof then jump to the wall and from the wall to the ground. The male in pic is prob just sniffing We were working on that bedroom so there were alot of new scents. I cant recall him ever barooing. The female though was very vocal. After talking to my mom, I don't have any more info. Both dogs were given up by their owners because they became to much for them to handle. Alphy the male was a handful being an escaper, Lady was a great counter surfer. Alphy liked all dogs and people. Lady only liked people. But other than that they were sweet and loving dogs.

Thank you very much for the info. I will have to try the time out. He was crate trained as far as being house broken, but now when I put brownie in the crate all he does is whine.. I do have 2 older dogs. one that plays with him and the other, well he just growls at brownie. The mother that was there when I got Brownie was a white shepard, maybe that is where the broad nose comes in.
