Basenji or not??

  • Hello to all, I finally did it! got a picture of brownie in. I just hope now that it is in the thread. I do have a question on how to make him not be so aggressive and biting hard, he is only 10 wks old. I got him when he was 4 wks.

  • oh wow, he looks SO SWEET! you will have to see what he grows into. i am thinking a mix because his nose is broad.
there is a thread on here about biting, has some good advice. i have a 6 month old, he is getting his big teeth in right now. i just tell him easy when he bites too hard (which is rarely) but it takes time. making sure they have a good outlet for chewing (toys, etc) is very critical!

  • I would have to agree, give him a little more time to grow….... he is a cute little puppy. Looks like a Basenji mix, but it's too early to tell from the photo provided.

Keep him busy with lots of chew toys!

Welcome Longears! You can check out the Behavioral Forum. There are two areas to look at previously posted issues that you've posed here.

Training a Basenji - and - Behavioral Issues

There is very good advice given in these areas. I know these cute creatures called young puppies can be a handful. Of course proper training while they're young is key to a milder older puppy. I got Duke when he was about 12 weeks old. Oh-WOW was I surprised at how vicious he seemed at times with those razor sharp teeth. Puppies are alot of work with attention to potty training and crate training. I followed advice given here and today, at almost 1 year old - He is so much more mild as I think back to his first months with us. I was so happy when I found this forum too . . . and still grateful.

Longears is really cute - I wish you loads of patience as he grows into the best dog in the world with you. :)

  • If you got him when he was only 4 weeks old, he is missing the socialising period with his mother and sibling, that's why breeder are letting go the pups only after 8 weeks old!
Hold his nose and say "no" really firmly when he's biting you and give him a time out, avoid to interact with him!
For myself what worked well with one of my puppy, who was quite bossy, was to put him gently on his back, and holding him with my hand around his neck (without chocking him), and one on his rear end when he was growling untill he calmed down.

  • Thank you very much for the info. I will have to try the time out. He was crate trained as far as being house broken, but now when I put brownie in the crate all he does is whine.. I do have 2 older dogs. one that plays with him and the other, well he just growls at brownie. The mother that was there when I got Brownie was a white shepard, maybe that is where the broad nose comes in.

We bought a dremel to do his nails and he absoutely hates it. I let him look, snif and move it while it was not off and he just backs up. I turned it on and he ran away. So we will us the dog clippers for his nails, those seem to be working.

I agree with the others that although he seems to have Basenji in him - his head is def. not Basenji. As for the leg I'd have it amputated if it troubles him - He'll cope with 3 legs I'm sure, but certainly consult a specialist first. Please keep us updated.

I might be inclined to believe foxhound if he didn't weigh less than 40 lbs. That And neither a lab or a foxhound have a tail that goes straight up and curls over the back. Whippet is a possibility, but again that doesn't explain the tail curling over the back. Granted his tail is longer and not as bushy as a pure Basenj, but then he isn't pure Basenji. Pugs have a wrinkled forehead and a curled tail, but he has the longer neck and a gait more like a sight hound, and his coat is shorter but not the double coat of a lab, so I am kind of ruling out pug. He may be a big pile of mixes from parents who were mixed. I don't really care what breed he is, he is a great dog. I think I am right on basenji, but if not, it's no big deal. And no he hasn't chewed my underwear. He did chew on the couch cushion where I usually sit.
