Blue tri basenji

Basenji Talk
  • I was talking with another (nonbasenji) dog person and she asked about dilutes. I told her I knew about some from along time ago, mentioned some of the other odd colors. I was looking for pics of odd colors to email her and imagine my surprise when I found this link.

Does anyone know anything about this cute pup? Looks like dew claws were done.

  • I've never seen a blue tri. It's a beautiful color. It's like a blue grey.

  • I have never seen anything like that before. The eyes are also blue, so I am all sorts of confused about that one. I half expected it to have red eyes and be some sort of albino type pup.

  • They are not albinos they are dilutes, different genetics. The eye color is dilute just like the coat color.

  • Very sweet and different, got distracted and found myself looking at all the pics, lol.

So because I know zero about genetics. On their facebook page it says they hope to get more blues by breeding. How hard would that be to get in breeding?

  • Wow, I sure would like to see the rest of that dog. He *looks an awful lot like a purebred in the face…but it a possibility that there is some rat terrier, or dobe, or something that frequently carries blue in there. I would also love to see a pedigree to see if it is "different" enough for blue to be a possiblity.

  • lol, that would not be hard to do… someone just email the FB owner, I'm sure she would be glad to share...

looks like the pup is out of a puppymill though :(

Sometimes people get a little freaked out if you start suggesting that the dog might not be purebred though..then they don't share at all.

  • This is one of the blues that was posted somewhere earlier this year from Nocturnal Kennels.

Dilute is recessive so both parents must carry the gene to produce it. The gene is pretty rare at this point in the gene pool. Unless they know of unrelated dogs that carry the gene and would be willing to use their dog then they will probably have to breed back to the parents, to siblings/half siblings, or aunt/uncles that are known to carry the gene.

Was there more than one, Lisa? I hadn't seen the pic before. Nice looking dog :)

  • I believe there was a blue tri and a blue trindle but I am not positive. I am not sure that they are registrable with AKC.

Is the general feeling that they are purebred?

  • This site is always full of surprises for me! liked seeing the tri-blue very unusual.

  • I think the consensus was maybe. Hard to tell for sure from the pics of the pups and parents.

  • I went to Sally's website and did find some "Nocturnal" dogs listed, but the registration numbers were strange. Some were clear, some carriers. I also tried to find decendents from the blue dogs May Morning of Sin and Morining Mist of Sin, but that also was a dead end. However, relatives of these dogs have been used.

I am thinking the blue in the eyes is the reflection, not the color. Blue dobes have brown eyes, just like black ones.

  • The tri blue is a beautiful dog - never saw another like it - but if I did I'd grab it in a minute!

I agree…I think we all agree....I can't imagine why the original founders of our breed wished to get rid of that color. Such a shame.

  • I guess I am of the minority…regarding the color... While I can appreciate a good structured dog of any color, I would have a tough time with the Blue.....

@planetsaver said in Basenji for me or not ?: Will be a problem to leave him alone, let's say 10 days / month an average of 9 hours a day. Also I do not want to have to much trouble with the neighbours, but I understand he can make some noise sometimes, maybe he can be trained to stay alone and not to bark that much. Why would you even think about training a hunting hound to stay home alone ? I would never let my Basenjis alone for more than 4 hours, and even that is very rare. 3 hours is absolute maximum. Like @tanza, I have sold puppies into apartment environments as long as all other boxes ticked positive. Someone there all the time, proper attention to training, not just leaving the dog alone, especially not as a puppy. btw, he won't bark at all. As you would know if you had really researched the breed. He will cry and scream but not bark ! No. At least you are asking questions but I really think you should find another breed.

Looks can be so deceiving- here is an article of a woman who adopted a rescue dog in N.J. Dog looks like a basenji - even her vet thought it might be basenji. She did an Embark DNA test - no basenji. Turned out the dog was a mixture of Mountain Cur, Rat Terrier, Beagle, and Boston Terrier. link text

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

@Thana: she does have basenji characteristics then apart from her colours and looks.- i also think she must have some basenji blood! She is lovely and lucky no matter what! adorable little face:))))) Having read about the characteristics I think she does. The lady with the basenji that we met also commented on some of the things she was doing as "very basenji" (eg. standing on her back legs so she could see what was going on). Has a lovely wrinkly forehead too. Got very frustrated with me earlier and did her funny bark, more of a wierd howl really. She is def one of a kind. Its a shame we have to have her spayed (not that I could ever justify letting her have a litter).

Thanks for that site, I may order the cooling jacket for my black basenji, he gets really hot and that might let us walk all of them in the summer(before dark). Your harness looks really great. Anne
