Need some options on this one !


  • This is kinda an off the wall question but i thought some of you might be able to help cuz i'm stumped .

    i have a 6ft high privacy fence all around my backyard and lately there has been 5-6 cats next door well the problem i have been having is they {the cats} like to jump up on the fence and run across {my fence} I don't want the dogs to get them . They have come close a couple times and i know if one of them falls off the fence or something the 3 of mine will most likely kill it . So now before i let the dogs out i feel like i have to make alot of noise to scare them off witch isn't always good when it's 10.11.12 at night 😞

    So i was gonna ask does anyone know if there is some kind of spray or something i can get and spray on the fence that would keep the cats away ??


  • Don't know much about that. But I did find THIS, was a pretty interesting read. Some great ideas there.

    Personally I loved the "Super Soaker" idea…haha!


  • You could try water, or maybe even if it gets bad enough, the electric wires for the tops of the fences.


  • What about double sided sticky tape - I've seen people use it on their furniture to keep cats from scratching on legs, etc.


  • i like the super soaker idea but by the time i got my finger on it to spray the dogs would alrready be at the fence LOL I am gonna try the moth ball thing for a couple days i'll just take little contairs and pin them up on the fence maybe they will get the hint { however u would think they can smell my dogs and know there over here not to mention u would think since they have already got chased by them they would realize not to come over here } Another person before suggested laydel my dogs pees and then put it on the corners of where the cats jump up on the fence to start walking across and they will smell it cuz it would be in the wood and stay away but not sure if that one would work also i don't want my whole fence smelling like urine ewwww .. Has anyone had any issues like this before ? What did u do ??

  • The cat repellant spray that I saw being sold is lemon scented to keep them away and has cayenne oil to keep them from chewing on plants. They also recommended lavender oil. I would guess it is the strong scents that keep them away just like citronella is used in the no bark collars.


  • I found this on the internet different.
    Nail aluminum foil along the top of fence. the shiny reflections scare cats, and they don't like the feel of foil under there paws. This may not stop the cats from getting over fence, but it will deter them from walking along the top of it.

    Attach some large ( at least 2 inches in diameter) PVC pipe to the top of the fence. This will make it hard for cats to grip with there claws and since it hangs over the edge of the fence it be harder for them to get over.

    Fit a length of string so that it hangs about 1 foot above top edge of the fence, which will discourage cats from trying to wlak there. Orange peels, aluminum foil, or bits of broken CD hung from the string will deter cats futher.

    Do not know if this works or not who knows. Good Luck.

  • What I used for years is carpet tack strips on top of the fence… very effective


  • I'm not sure who owns them I see them next door in the yard but i know the person that lives there doesnt come out to often so not sure if they have taken up home in his backyard or that there his and he doesnt mind them outside . There's alot of dogs in the area so if it where me i wouldn't feel comfortable having them outside to many things that would happen to them. anyways i didn't even think of the tack strips Do u nail them into the fence ?? or just lay them ontop i just don't want them to blow off and then my dogs get them in there feet .


  • You can get cut out cats with shiny eyes, think they are made of metal and put a couple on the fence. The theory is other cats wont approach them as they think these cats own the territory. I know someone nearby has one on their lawn.
    Its a tricky one as outside cats are free agents, we have next doors cat to wind our dog up, he comes across the bungalow roof and i swear he is laughing at Max when he gets agitated:).

    We nailed them on the top of the fence… LOL we also put them under the SOD on the front lawn one year because the coons kept "rolling" up the new SOD every night... nothing like having a brand new lawn "rolled" out... only to find it rolled back up the next morning... carpet tack strips worked great for that too....


  • I did some more searching, and came across what the plant Catnip does. This is a real weird plant…at least for cats.

    Have a look, pretty interesting. It's like a drug to them.
    So if you plant it somewere away from your fence you will without a doubt get rid of them from your fence. However, it will attract MORE cats to your area...maybe plant one 10 meters away or something?

  • I tried the lemon spray on my fences (chain link) - it helped with the young cats but the old toms didn't care. I sprayed them with the hose on high power and that helped.


  • Because I have owned cats all my life, I believe those cats know exactly what they are doing. They are taunting your dogs, because that's fun for them. The dogs may come close, but I would be really surprised if a cat ever got grabbed. I presently have a cat who is 15 years old and suffering with kidney problems - she has terrorized my 7 month old female Basenji, who has always tried to get her to play or just "get" her, and my B has cat scars to show for it. Finally, in the past couple weeks, the "leave it" command is working - but mainly she has learned to give the cat wide berth. I know Basenjis hunt small animals including cats, but the fence-walkers are sure footed and quick enough to jump the other way if the dogs come close.


  • We also have a 15 year old cat or will be next month. Jaycee knows that Sir Duke means business. Your correct I also 2nd about a cat being sure footed.

    LOL…don't you wish in a way that you actually saw them do it. I bet it would be funny to watch.


  • We used to have a beautiful persian in the neighborhood who walked the fence top, as well as back and forth outside the chain link, dragging his tail across it to torment the dogs (our first basenjis, back in the 70s) One day I found that cat dead in the middle of our back yard. No wound I could find, just dead. I think Pete must have gotten revenge for the taunting. I always felt bad about that beautiful cat.


  • Ya thats what i though about "well the cats should be able to jump over real quick so they will be fine" Thats till when i let them out all 3 of them charged the fence with phoenix and cheyanne hitting it and Aspen doing the highest jump i have ever seen him do it got up to the top of the fence not over but enough where his nose hit the cat and LUCKLY pushed it back on the other side of the fence . So either they are not as fast or there alittle " Special" cuz u would think 3 dogs charging at u they would move but nope . I got a super soaker today so we will try that tommrow And i am still keeping that tack mat in mind . I'm gonna be known as the crazy keeping the cats out of her yard lady soon LOL i will be back there in my rambo jear with a super soaker. tacks on the fence and a spray in my other hand LMAO {i just pictured that } LMAO

    Maybe, but I'm not so convinced. You'd think the cat around here would not have run up the light pole and got stuck there a second time. I think he spent about 3 days up there each time. 😕
