Advice please if a Basenji might be a good match.

  • I managed to buy three gates, complete with posts and hinges, many years ago for just a few dollars. They had been badly measured for an order and were going begging. No matter to me that they are all slightly different !

Before we put up the chain link (and the gates - all three of them) Shani chewed off a tayberry bush which fruits on year old wood - so no fruit for 2 years. and as puppies she and her brother got fat on Brussel sprouts straight from the plant stem. Tuppy lay among the asparagus and ate the spears almost as they appeared. They were worse than the badgers among the sweetcorn, chewing the cobs as fast as they ripened. And as the the herb patch - Nothing quite like sage and oregano for rolling in if you are a Basenji puppy !

  • That’s funny! We’ll see how it goes, I am aware that they are climbers but from what i’ve heard from the lady that I had a phone conversation with, Nova is not. And I don’t really care if she is a Basenji mix but the DNA test is a good idea. It kind of depends if she is friendly with cats or not because I don’t want anyone to get hurt.

That's something that can sometimes be finessed, with a bit of time and patience. My dogs knew there was a difference between "our" cats and strays, but that said, mine were barn cats, not house cats. Usually problems arise if the cats run from the dog and the chase instinct kicks in, but even if all seems well it's generally a good idea not to leave them alone unsupervised. A dog may seem fine with the cats up until one takes liberties and the dog resents it.

  • The problem is our cats love dogs, they’ll probably be all over her... that’s what they did with the shar pei and Dane and now with Fozz, so it probably will be clear during meet and greet.

  • 1 of our 2 ducks was killed last night by some creature the other one.. she was totally lost and confused but my daughter brought her to the tub she had a nice swim and has a great appetite and i’m looking at the options placing her or adopting another one.. they just don’t do well alone. Talking to ducks owners now..It was crazy last couple of days, crows, hawks, bears..

  • @dagodingo we have had our basenji rescue for 4 years. He has never climbed or dug in the yard but we still have issues with he and the cat. We still have to keep them separated Baby steps still after four years Just can’t trust him He is a great companion on the walk Has never learned how to walk on a leash so we keep him in a harness with the 26 foot long leash We also have numerous acres

  • Nova has been adopted!((

  • @Zande
Roflmao. Hey, at least it was healthy snacks.

  • @reddie
No doubt some rescues are like that. But more are not...taking on medically needy pets that they may easily put thousands into one dog. While it may have had little expense, settling a reasonable fee that allows them to help other dogs.

  • I am sorry. Maybe they will put you on a waiting list in case it doesnt work out.

  • I don’t know, it’s not like they are getting a lot of Basenji mixes. We’ll see how it goes. Just want to have a short summer vacation without any troubles at home.

  • Then a basenji will fit right in. Hope yoour fence is 6 ft tall and not chainlink kind.

  • Local Animal Shelters do not post on Petfinder, they post on PetHarbor. You can set up email alerts to let you know when a Basenji pops up. And they are pretty reliable with updating availability.

That said, I've found that many of the people involved have little to no knowledge about dog breeds. Example: I think this dog looks closer to a Jack Russell mix, as opposed to a Basenji mix. Maybe it has some B in it... but it wouldn't be my first thought.

Another option might be to become a foster family with BRAT.

    Where is "here"? Petfinders is very used by most shelters I know of;

    Is petfinder a good site?
Petfinder is the world's largest database of adoptable pets, and breeders are not permitted to list purposely-bred pets. Plus, Petfinder is free for shelters and rescue groups to use. Almost all shelters and rescue groups across North America use Petfinder, so if a group doesn't, it's a good idea to ask why.<<

From Wiki: Petfinder is a for-profit internet company that operates the largest online pet adoption website serving all of North America. The company reports that it currently lists “more than 315,000 adoptable pets from nearly 14,000 animal shelters and rescue groups.” Wikipedia

Chain link is perfectly OK provided it is loose. Basenjis won't have confidence to climb a loose fence. I have a mere 4 foot c/l fence all around my vegetable patch and no Basenji has ever tried to climb it, despite the edible delights on the other side.

  • Have you tried the roller tops?

  • @debradownsouth I'm referring to Shelters, not Rescue Groups. Local government shelters (according to the Animal Control Officers in my corner of the world) consider Petfinder to be an unreliable, often outdated, source. They recommend using PetHarbor.

Wikipedia, btw, does not guarantee accuracy on any subject. Furthermore, I would consider 14,000 (combined shelters and rescue groups) to be a drop in the bucket. The biggest problem with Petfinder as a resource would be that it's only as accurate as the person posting the information. Some things might be spot on, others... not.

Not sure why this seems a hot button...but you said:
"Local Animal Shelters do not post on Petfinder, they post on PetHarbor. "

Not sure where it went from local to just "your corner ".. but sadly I find both large and small shelters and rescues aren't totally relIable...and I'd be surprised to find any group, wiki, petfinder, etc promising accuracy. (" PetHarbor make no assertions about the availability, behavior or condition of any animal.")

The way they have over 300,000 adoptable pets listed is precisely by having each source upload. According to the ASPCA, around 3.4 million dogs and cats are adopted each year from shelters. I don't find listing 315,000 pets to be a drop in the bucket. Not that any of the data is all that accurate...most is self reported and some studies have exposed high rates of false positive reporting. Petharbor, btw, says they also list shelter, SPCA, Humane Society, county or city Animal Control, and many private animal-welfare organizations."

To me, it isn't a contest ...list everywhere you can. My friend began a county by county rescue volunteer organization a few years ago. They have done incredibly well, but the time needed is staggering. I'm just happy for everyone who helps. Hopefully Petharbor can share ways to have more accuracy. It's all good.

  • You did not mention how high your fence was or what kind. Hope it is not chainlink. Basenji's can climb chainlink.

And left alone, will yodo that can be heard for a mile....

  • @debradownsouth It's like you don't think about what you write.... I state that my "Local Animal Shelters do not post on Petfinder, they post on PetHarbor"... and you twist it around trying to claim -- wait, what is your point here? You're all over the place. Little of what you say makes any sense at all, except your attempts to appear educated. Exactly what was it about a link to PetHarbor that got you so excited in the first place?

@ChristyRutherford: When I went to Thailand, the dogs there looked very basenji like. It was hard to see them in the shape they were. Definitly not spoiled as dogs are here. Very thin and most had mange. They are wild there, and you dont pet them, they just kinda run around like squirrles or raccoons. It was very hard for me to see them. I took some pictures, of the healthier ones. I will try and find them. They tended to stay at the temples "temple dogs" because the Monks would care, somewhat, for them. The ones running in towns and villages were much worse looking, some. I would have taken them all home. Goes to show what how different people (not just "us/them) but all of us are different form each other. The guide and I had a wonderful time comparing and contrasting our cultures. I let her know how I treat my dog, and although she said it was nice and she liked dogs, I knew she thought I was crazy. I know what you mean. I was in there a couple of summers ago. Some of the dogs at the temple had mange so bad that they were missing a good portion of their fur not mention the number of dogs wondering around with limps and crooked limbs from being hit by bikes and cars. Funny story…before I went with UT the students from the University there came and two of them stayed with my parents. I brought them over to my apartment to hang out one evening and they went wild for Manning. I mean they took picture after picture and didn't want to put him down. Poor Rascal, my mutt, was sitting there like "hey what about me?" Finally, they explained how the King in Thailand has basenjis and has made them very popular. They were even wearing polo shirts with little stitched pictures of the King's dog on them. Here is a link about the King's dog Tongdaeng, a basenji mix. There is a great book called The Story of Tongdaeng. Inside the book are pictures of the king surrounded by Tongdaeng and his other basenjis. Here is a link that tells some of the story. http://www.bangkokpost.com/60yrsthrone/litterary/index.html I have to say…the Thai monarchy has gained my respect!:D

My experience with my unneutered male was not good when another neutered male came to stay with us for a short period. I had to keep them separated. My male disliked even this arrangement and would pee in his crate to display his disapproval of having another male in the house. We later had a female pup in the house and our male got along with her great. I aksed for suggestion on how to get them to get along and nothing worked. Someone even said that it might never work.

I'm sorry for the loss of your dear Basenjis. Losing a pet is so difficult. I hope this site helps you through the transition. Welcome.
