Roscoe the basenji

Member Introductions
  • My name is Geoff and I recently purchased my first dog and I chose a Basenji. I loved the breed the minute I saw them. They cary themselves with a sense of dignity. Upon getting Roscoe, I quickly realized they are a handful but I welcome the challenge and wouldn't give him up for anything. He is quickly learning but needs some guidance so I have enrolled him in an obedience boarding house for a week. Can't wait to get him back so I can see the progress he's made. So far I'm very happy with the decision to get Roscoe and I look forward to many years with my little buddy.

  • Welcome, do you have pictures? Who did you get him from, many of us are related by our Basenjis here on the Forum.

Hope that the boarding "school" works out….. but I would suggest that when he gets home that you continue with obedience classes where you would with him as a team

  • Welcome to the forum Geoff and Roscoe. You will find tons of great advice, info and friendship here.
Have you any pics of Roscoe ?
I have never heard of a Training boarding school, don't mean to be rude but it seems a funny idea to me as you need to see what's going on and work with your Dog.
As Tanza says when he gets home perhaps enrol him in training classes that you attend as well.
You have chosen a great breed and i hope you have fun with him.

  • Welcome Geoff and Roscoe. I think you've made the right decision, you can get a lot of pleasure bringing him up.

Please let us know how the boarding school works out.

The only experience I've had here is of someone I know that sent his Basenji to one to train him not chase livestock. It must have worked for the trainer but unfortunately the owner needed training as well and the poor little boy ended up in our Rescue!!

So I agree with Pat - when he gets back enrol him in classes that you attend as well.

  • Welcome to the forum!

  • welcome to both of you. You chose a great dog for years of entertainment and love. :)

Hi there. I would do some DNA testing on him. However, if you go to the Colorado Basenji Rescue website, there is a mix at the bottom of the page. There appears to be some similarities. You could also email Peggy of CBR with your photos and ask her. She has been working with Basenji and Basenji mixes for a long, long time.

@krunzer: Keep them separate in their own crates. The older one may not want to put up with puppy play in a big crate. When crated mine are always separate unless they are at the kennel, then they are in the same pen because Becca is not fond of the kennel. PS, basenjis don't like being woken up much, and one dog annoying another who wants to stay asleep might result in a fracas in a confined space; never a good thing.

HI, we don't have many breeders in New Zealand but luckily there was one that had a website which came up when I did a search on the web and was given information about more breeders here. If you do find a breeder please make sure they are a responsible breeder and do all the health testing etc. Lot's of info on this forum regarding this and maybe someone can help further. Good luck with your search. Jolanda and Kaiser

He's a hungry dog today. Gave him 1/2 cup in the morning and just a few minutes ago. He had no problem eating. I'm much more happy that he's eating now. He likes his bone as well. Not too much into the Kong yet. I just wish he didn't cry in his crate when I put him in there. Feel bad for him but I know it just takes adjusting. He is perfectly fine when I return home after he's been in there awhile. It's just the initial time. To be honest though, this transition went far better than I expected. I was prepared for the worst. This little guy has done very well.

It was actually the vet tech wasn't the most brilliant thing on the planet… needless to say I found another vet the next week and they think she might have some bulldog in her... what a mix. I believe that she definitely could have some bulldog in her judging by the way she lays around the house.

i found the only thing that gets Sandies attention now days is a rolled news paper… i dont hit her with it, just the site of it and me slapping it against my legg, usually makes her stop what ever she is doing...usually its nothing major... chasing the cats...or if she just wont stop beating me up after we play...
