Lost basenji Knoxville, Tennessee

  • I have friends in Knoxville but please give me an email for them to contact you!

  • Unfortunately we did not get the outcome we wanted. A neighbor called me today and recognized Tegres on the side of a busy highway. He had been hit by a vehicle at some point this morning. The only consolation we have is that it looks like he probably died instantly. My husband and I are completely heart broken over this as we treat our fosters like our own babies.

  • I am so sorry. :(

I am SO very sorry for your loss… even though Tegres was only with you for a short time, you were able to shower him with hope and love....

I understand your heart-break, as I lost my Zeba last Friday. She escaped from her collar while she was getting out of our SUV to go to PetSmart daycare, and then thought that everyone was playing tag with her... she ran out into the busy morning rush hour traffic and was struck. Despite the fact that medical care was immediately available, Zeba was killed immediately.

Like you, Zeba was my baby, and even writing about this a week later still brings me to tears... I hope that Tegres was warmly welcomed by Zeba at the Rainbow Bridge, and that the two of them are scaring the chickens to death.

    Hugs and roos to you….

  • First Basenji's

What sad, sad news from you both, achandl2 and Patty. I'm chilled to hear two such similar stories happening back-to-back. May you both heal in time…

  • I am so, so sorry for both of your losses :*(

  • I feel for both of you. It is always hard to lose a dog, but this is one of the worst ways. I am so sorry, and I know the pain you must be feeling.

  • Things like this can happen so quickly, just in the blink of an eye. I'm so sad to read about both of these basenjis. My heart breaks for you.

  • This is such sad news - my heart goes out to you. Even on the days when they are a test of our patience, the thought of losing our B's is unthinkable. You have the knowledge that they knew love and good care before they crossed to the Rainbow Bridge.

  • My heart aches for both of you, this is a sudden and terrible way to lose a beloved dog. Hugs.

  • I am so sorry to hear that Tegres was found dead. This is heartbreaking.

  • When I sent my post, I had not read that Zeba has also crossed the bridge. My condolences on both basenjis.

  • Oh no, what devastation for both of you. :( I'm really, really sorry to hear this. I know from many years of having Basenjis that some are so fast to escape.

  • Thinking of you both at this very sad time…

  • How terribly sad for all involved…I'm so sorry.

  • Please ignore - this is just a test.

A good "safety" exercise to practice is a command that tells your dog treats are in the offing, and use it at irregular intervals when you are walking. Combine the command with a total release of pressure on the leash, preferably when your dog has firm tension on said leash. Then if something unexpected happens you have a built in reaction of the dog to look to you for a reward. This won't work if your dog is pursuing a major distraction, but should give you an edge if you have an equipment failure in otherwise neutral conditions. (you can carry this one step further by "accidentally" dropping the leash in a controlled area, or with a light line attached for safety, and practice until the dog turns to you when it feels a total release)

update: Ginny (Basenji lost in Dennis, MA) has been sighted several times, including by Cheryl herself, and is hanging around a specific area. A humane trap will be set up tomorrow, and her new dog-brother Tom is on the job laying down a scent trail for her. Keep the good vibes coming at them all, and keep your fingers crossed for good news in the very near future! Laura Whitney Arlington, MA

Sonic has been found in the area he was lost, according to a notice on B-Pix last night. He is home safe and sound.
