URGENT ADVICE - Possible insect sting

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Do let us know how it goes.

  • One of our dogs had a similar reaction many years ago and he looked reminiscent of a Shar Pei. I seem to remember that some people at the time said it could be reactions to frogs or toads. Anyway within 24 hours he was back to normal so hopefully your dogs will be ok for the NBS show.

  • Happened to one of mine too, her whole head swelled up and yes, she did look just like a Shar Pei! It had started to go down by morning and we never did discover what had caused it.
Hope Nakura is looking better this morning.

  • Thanks Guys. Nakura's swelling seems to have gone down a little over night. She is much better in herself. I will give her another 1/2 loratadine tablet this morning as it didn't seem to do any harm. Her eye is really weepy still so I am bathing it regularly in warm salty water. She still won't let me near her mouth though.

  • Glad she is feeling a bit better today:D

  • I so glad she is feeling better..

  • Pleased to hear Nakura is improving.

  • Hi Vicky - just noticed this thread - been away to Inverness on business then straight down to Windsor & back - hope Nakura is better.

I always keep a tube of an antihistamine cream so i can rub on just a wee dab if they get stung - 20 years ago i had a friend who lost her champion dobe bitch when she got stung in the throat after swallowing a bee - since then i have always had antihistamine in one shape or form in the car, showbag, cuboards at home etc.

  • Nakura is much better tonight. Just a little bit weepy in her eye still. It's now Chance that's the problem. He seems to have come out in what I can only describe as hives. He's got little swellings all over his body and more and more are popping up all the time. I've just given him the other half of Nakura's Loratadine tablet and if that hasn't helped by morning, I now have a supply of Benadryl. I've racked my brain to think what he could be allergic to but I've done nothing different, walked him in the usual places etc.

Honestly, it's one thing after another. I think they just like me to worry all the time!

  • Glad Nakura is getting better and sorry that chance has something wrong now. It's very strange, sounds like maybe they are allergic to the same thing but have reacted in different ways. Is it possible that there is a new plant/weed or something on their walk, could Nakura have rubbed her face in it. Any chemicals been sprayed in the fields. I am guessing you havent fed them anything different.
You will soon have grey hair at this rate, lol.

  • Cali had what sounds the same as what Chance has when we lived in Ripon. It turned out it was harvest mites but it might be a bit early for them yet:confused: Have a look inbetween his toes for tiny little red things.

  • Wow, good thing Nakura is doing better, Sorry that Chance is feeling the wrath of it now. I hope things are better by tomorrow

  • Update on Nakura.

Her face and glands were badly swollen again last night. Took her to vets this morning. She has had 2 back teeth removed.

Had just started using Logic Gel on her - too little too late. Now I have a tooth brush for her too. We certainly don't want to be losing any more teeth. :)

Ohh dear poor Nakura, but at least you now know what the problem was.
    How is Chance today?

  • So the teeth made her swell up like that? How is Chance is he feeling better? .

  • Glad Nakura is healing…Chance how is he doing?

  • Oh Vicki - you've had a time of it. Poor Nakura!
As you know I did think of teeth but as she seemed to be eating normally and didn't seem in pain, we discounted it.
What a shame - she must have been feeling miserable at least but glad that the vet has sussed it out. I don't suppose she'll feel like showing tomorrow, but of course you'll be able to bring her along.
Don't forget to give Fragraria 6 or 30c for about 5 to 6 days before you brush as that does help to loosen the plaque.
    Hoping to see you tomorrow!

  • Poor Nakura, I hope she is feeling better now.

  • She looked fine at the NBS. you would never know she had a problem.

  • Just catching up with this post. Chance is great, he had a small outbreak of hives a couple of days ago but I think it's about all cleared up now.

Nakura had a small splinter in her gum (she has eaten her way out of her kennel!) This caused an absess which infected her teeth (so the vet said). She had bad breath for years though and since having the teeth out I can quite happily put my nose near her mouth. The VILE smell has completely gone. :)

Thanks Jisgard, I thought she looked good at the show too. She did much better in her class than I expected under that judge. :) (I just wish i could find a judge who will give her her third ticket) :D

@debradownsouth said in Effective Insect Repellent!: While he is getting better, we've spent much of Moose's life (he's 20 mos) saying "What's in your mouth?" My catchphrase is "What have you got NOW ?" when addressing the Basenjis. Bonemeal is a favourite and if I am planting a new bush or plants, I daren't let them see me do it. I object to the digging up of fresh greenery which otherwise results from allowing canine spectators. The fabric bag is only for taking things up and down stairs, Debra. I use a back pack outdoors sometimes.

I don't see how just gas is the issue, is the vet sure? In general you can give gas X… but I would be afraid to give this dog anything until a thorough workup. Bloat is related to gas that gets trapped. Please get this dog to a specialist if this happens again.

I only just realized where you live, has he been tested for Valley Fever? Here are some of the symptoms of disseminated Valley Fever: ? lameness or swelling of limbs ? back or neck pain ? seizures and other manifestations of central nervous system swelling ? soft swellings under the skin that resemble abscesses ? swollen lymph nodes under the chin, in front of the shoulder blades, or behind the stifles ? non-healing skin ulcerations or draining tracts that ooze fluid ? eye inflammation with pain or cloudiness Here is a link to a full article on Valley Fever, http://www.vfce.arizona.edu/Content/Documents/Valley%20Fever%20in%20Dogs%20for%20PDF.pdf I know there is at least one person on the forums that had a dog with disseminated Valley Fever.

When I took my puppy to my vet, he said he had little knowledge of the Basenji, but he would start reading up on them. Since that time, he's thanked me for the opportunity, and says he is learning more all the time - at our last visit for final puppy shots he said he felt he was becoming quite an expert - if you come across a vet who doesn't have a lot of knowledge about them, he could quite easily love the challenge and become great on the Basenji issues. I told him I'd sent for the DNA marker kit and had Shaye tested (thank God, it was clear), and he launched into a really good discussion about the symptoms, illness, etc., and said he was glad I'd done that, but maybe in a while we would do some blood work to be sure of everything. I feel very confident with him now - so, a good vet with a love to be challenged can be an answer too.
