URGENT ADVICE - Possible insect sting

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I don't know, she very well could've gotten into it..I wish she would let you look at her mouth. If she was bit by something the stinger might still be in her right? Maybe tonight, well it already is night for you , isn't it, maybe when she settles down to sleep, she might let you look and see what you can see. Either way i wish y'all have a good night and that she is getting better from here on out.

  • yes, maybe when she's a bit sleepy she might let you look in her mouth incase there is anything there. Hope she's ok tomorrow.

  • I hope she is better tomorrow - don't forget to order Apis Mel 30c and Urtica Urens 30c to keep by you in future. Ainsworth's 'phone no. is 02079355330, they are on the web but I've found they will post quicker when the order is given over the 'phone (next day if ordered a.m). They aren't open Saturdays and obviously too late for Nakura's this time but these are two of several remedies that I always keep.
Why is it that these things always happen over the weekend?!!!!
I'm sure she'll be ok , keep in touch.

  • @Benkura:

I've been reading up on Loratadine and it is the generic name for Clarytin. Some websites say it should be OK to give her 1/2 tab. What do you guys think?

That is the dosage my vet gave me…5 mg every 12 to 24 h.

  • Do let us know how it goes.

  • One of our dogs had a similar reaction many years ago and he looked reminiscent of a Shar Pei. I seem to remember that some people at the time said it could be reactions to frogs or toads. Anyway within 24 hours he was back to normal so hopefully your dogs will be ok for the NBS show.

    Steve

  • Happened to one of mine too, her whole head swelled up and yes, she did look just like a Shar Pei! It had started to go down by morning and we never did discover what had caused it.
Hope Nakura is looking better this morning.

  • Thanks Guys. Nakura's swelling seems to have gone down a little over night. She is much better in herself. I will give her another 1/2 loratadine tablet this morning as it didn't seem to do any harm. Her eye is really weepy still so I am bathing it regularly in warm salty water. She still won't let me near her mouth though.

  • Glad she is feeling a bit better today:D

  • I so glad she is feeling better..

  • Pleased to hear Nakura is improving.

  • Hi Vicky - just noticed this thread - been away to Inverness on business then straight down to Windsor & back - hope Nakura is better.

I always keep a tube of an antihistamine cream so i can rub on just a wee dab if they get stung - 20 years ago i had a friend who lost her champion dobe bitch when she got stung in the throat after swallowing a bee - since then i have always had antihistamine in one shape or form in the car, showbag, cuboards at home etc.

  • Nakura is much better tonight. Just a little bit weepy in her eye still. It's now Chance that's the problem. He seems to have come out in what I can only describe as hives. He's got little swellings all over his body and more and more are popping up all the time. I've just given him the other half of Nakura's Loratadine tablet and if that hasn't helped by morning, I now have a supply of Benadryl. I've racked my brain to think what he could be allergic to but I've done nothing different, walked him in the usual places etc.

Honestly, it's one thing after another. I think they just like me to worry all the time!

  • Glad Nakura is getting better and sorry that chance has something wrong now. It's very strange, sounds like maybe they are allergic to the same thing but have reacted in different ways. Is it possible that there is a new plant/weed or something on their walk, could Nakura have rubbed her face in it. Any chemicals been sprayed in the fields. I am guessing you havent fed them anything different.
You will soon have grey hair at this rate, lol.

  • Cali had what sounds the same as what Chance has when we lived in Ripon. It turned out it was harvest mites but it might be a bit early for them yet:confused: Have a look inbetween his toes for tiny little red things.

  • Wow, good thing Nakura is doing better, Sorry that Chance is feeling the wrath of it now. I hope things are better by tomorrow

  • Update on Nakura.

Her face and glands were badly swollen again last night. Took her to vets this morning. She has had 2 back teeth removed.

Had just started using Logic Gel on her - too little too late. Now I have a tooth brush for her too. We certainly don't want to be losing any more teeth. :)

Ohh dear poor Nakura, but at least you now know what the problem was.
    How is Chance today?

  • So the teeth made her swell up like that? How is Chance is he feeling better? .

  • Glad Nakura is healing…Chance how is he doing?

@Saving Thanks so much for the information! I am researching further and continuing with her rehab exercises as best I can. Glad you recovered from your spinal injuries.

Interesting. If anyone else tries this, I would love to get some feedback. As I understand it, food sensitivities are hard to diagnose accurately. There's skin allergy testing, where a panel of fur is shaved off and different allergens are tested directly on the dog, which I was told often registers false positives. And there's something like VARL Liquid Gold Serum allergy testing, which still requires a blood draw. I guess they can test for food allergies as well, but again, I don't know how accurate that is. So I've been told that the best way to test for food allergies is still to try an elimination diet. It would be wonderful if there was a rigorous set of tests that could just tell you definitively what food your dog is allergic to! So if this test does it… cool. I'll definitely keep this in mind. Thanks for sharing, Pat.

@TuckerVA: The wings are cooked in "Wingaling". I think they are pressure cooked, or something, to the point of being completely soft, yes? Those would probably be okay…... the problem occurs with baking and grilling, etc because it makes the bones brittle and more likely to splinter than raw, or cooked to mush.
