Need some good thought

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Please keep my tri-ing guy, Jet, in your thoughts. Yesterday he hurt his back while trying to poop. I know, I know, don't laugh. He tries to go through life with dignity, but strange things always happen to him that make for good (funny) stories. He really is in pain though. I took him to the ER last night since this happened about 10 minutes after my vet closed for the night. He's on Rimadyl (for pain) and methocarbamol (muscle relaxant). I'll take him to our regular vet if he's not better in a day or two, but it's hard in the mean time.

  • Oh! Poor baby…I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers. I've known other dogs that have strained themselves that way.
    Please keep us posted.

  • Rimadyl is great for a strain but i have been warned against using it more than a week in a row and more than that one week in 3 months. luckily Medjai only has hurt himself twice in the last 8 months to need it.

  • You may want to consider acupuncture. Its a great alternative to look into

  • Oh Dear! Poor Jet! Good thoughts on the way…...

  • Thanks guys - he'll be on the Rim for a total of 5 days or so. I don't mind doing it short term, and I already have thought about calling the holistic vet (who does accupuncture) if he's not better by the weekend. Although I may call our traditional vet so we can get some xrays to make sure we're not looking at a disk problem. Someone else mentioned milk thistle, so I'll add that with dinner tonight. He seemed a little perkier on our before-the-sun-sets outting. Even pooped. I was a little nervous about that; I imagine he was too. While his back wasn't quite as curved as normal, it didn't seem he was in a lot of pain from poopping. Who knew poopping could be so dangerous?

Don't mean to laugh… but that does sound pretty funny... pooping and danger... How old is Jet?
And I give milk thistle to my two kids that have liver problems... never thought about it for back problems...

  • Poor little Jet. Hopefully, it is just temporary and will get better quickly. If not, I would have Xrays done before trying anything else.

  • Pat -
The milk thistle is because he's on Rimadyl. that can be hard on the liver. And Jet is 10. I think it was just one of those things. I have an uncle who was walking on the sidewalk, stepped wrong and did major damage to his knee. Jet has been locked in his "room" (Xpen in the middle of the main room and it is in the door way of the bedroom) all day. I hate for him not to sleep on the bed with the rest of us, but I'm just too afraid of him jumping off the bed. So, I put a heater next to the xpen and he has his heated mat if he gets cold. And I can see him from my bed, so he's not really isolated from the rest of the pack.

  • Got ya, forgot about the Rimadyl…. duh......

  • Poor little Jet :( Feel better soon!

  • Hope Jet recovers soon. Keep us posted.

  • Poor Jet….(((I'm sending hugs for you and jet!)))

  • Your dog suffered a similar injury, although not from ppoping, but that agrivated it.

We had him on similar meds and it has been about a month now and he seems fine. No damage to his spine.

Hope all goes well with your little Jet!

Michelle, I am so very sorry. :( I know it is hard, but try to not focus on their screw up. They didn't hurt HER, they stressed you. Focus on how much loved that dear dog was and that you gave her a fantastic last day. I wish caring could ease your hurt, but it doesn't– but know you are, in fact, cared for. Thank you for sharing her with us. ((hugs))

@Marie: One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet and which is recommended when treating giardia is to bathe the dog. This is because the giardia cysts can adhere to the hair around the hind end of the dog who then can re-infect himself by grooming. More of a factor in a long haired dog, obviously, but if it were me I'd be giving Oakley a few baths just to be on the safe side. (I'm sure he'll thank me for this suggestion!) Oooooo, I didn't know that! That is a great bit of info!

I would not have posted if I beleived it to be a scam. For folks who do worry about such things - one can always let the person know they would be more than willing to donate directly to the vet clinic for care of their pet. M.C. I too beleive they either got what they needed to help their little girl or they realized they put too much info on craigslist. I am hoping for the former. As for Drew - yes - that is a picture of him. If you really want to know - email me privately and I can send you a copy of an article I was asked to write for an Aussie pubication re: him.

Thanks everyone for your help concerning Seren's torn dew claw. We've just returned from the vet. It wasn't her toe just the nail. Her nail was trimed (pretty deep) and bandaged. She looks so pathetic holding her foot up with the bandage. Hopefully the bandage will stay on at least until tomorrow. A little bit of 'bitter apple' may help. The vet assures me she will be fine. The Basenji Forums folks are the best!

We did the puppies at 3 wks of age. They would like the babes to be off momm for at least a few hours. I did mine overnight to be sure the only DNA in the mouth was their own. With adults, doing it right when they wake up is the best way to go. Let hte FTA card dry an hour + then package and mail. Do NOT send blood samples for the Fanconi test. You will be asked to order a swab if you do. They are running all the fanconi tests [on live dogs] on swabs ONLY. Jon has requested this via several lists.
