Vet needed Toronto

    Hi,

    I'm purchasing a Basenji this upcoming weekend. I'm currently looking for a vet in Toronto that has experience with the breed. Does anyone know of any good vets in the Toronto area?

    Check with the breeder.
    They can most likely give you the name of a vet in your area.

    My Breeder has been very very helpful but the vets that she is familiar with are 1-2 hours from Toronto. I was hoping to find one in Toronto that may be familiar with Basenjis or willing to work with and learn about them.

    He's getting my Frankie, Pat. While I know outside the TO area, I don't know of anyone directly inside TO. We will just have to start interviewing the vets in his area. Matthew can interview them first and I can always do a phone interview. We are racing this weekend, so there may be someone there that may know of someone closer. It was just worth a shot in case someone on the forum lived closer to Matthew.

    I'm puzzled because if she has the correct pliant skin for a Basenji, it would get fewer wrinkles if she was too fat. I stand to be corrected here but thats what happens to mine!! I think she looks very good and that she has no need to lose any weight. Her coat is gleaming. Congratulations to you for keeping her in such lovely condition! I've only ever had to remove ticks from our collies - the Basenjis have never had one but I can understand that you feel the need to give medicine but personally I only give conventional medicine to a Basenji if I (and my vet) consider it totally necessary.

    We did the puppies at 3 wks of age. They would like the babes to be off momm for at least a few hours. I did mine overnight to be sure the only DNA in the mouth was their own. With adults, doing it right when they wake up is the best way to go. Let hte FTA card dry an hour + then package and mail. Do NOT send blood samples for the Fanconi test. You will be asked to order a swab if you do. They are running all the fanconi tests [on live dogs] on swabs ONLY. Jon has requested this via several lists.

    BDawg…thanks...the next real vet appointment will tell me which member on the forum was right. :D:D:D I'm going with the thought that it was a one off because of the euthanasia (hey, I'm an optimist :D). In the meantime, I'll just do a couple of social visits. BTW, mine don't react to going in the driveway or door of the vet...so I think I'm lucky there. The only shots they've ever had have been regular vaccines.

    Though my dogs have not had a reaction to a vaccine, I tend to err on the side of caution when it comes to vaccines. I would rather give a benadryl to help prvent a reaction then wait and hope for the best. I say this because my cat had a severe vaccine reaction after his rabies shot. Within 20 minutes of the shot he was vomiting, the hair at the vaccination site fell out and the site became swollen. We had to rush him back to the vet to be treated for the reaction.
