Wet grass is really "Sulphuric Acid"

Basenji Talk
  • I'm convinced wet grass must really be some kind of burning acid!! Why else would a healthy Basenji refuse to set foot on it, or do the "3 legged dance" when forced to go out. Anyone have the same experience? ;)

  • '3 legged dance' that's funny and conjures up the pic. Shadow will stand on the steps looking down as if you say-"You really want me to do what?"

  • ROFL :D :D :D so true!

  • This is funny. The first time we took our B out in the rain he looked at my husband like yeah right. He walked only under the umbrella. He still continues to look at us oddly when we open the door and its cold, raining, snowing and we have to give him a nudge. What brats.

  • We keep a towel available for Dash so when he comes in he can dry himself off. If we forget he goes into the bathroom and takes one of ours to do it.
However, if it is raining we have a heck of a time to get him out the door. When we push him out he generally will just sit by the door and look as pathetic as possible to be let back in while our beagle run around and gets all nasty.

  • I'm craking up reading this. I swear B's are real characters. Champ puts on that face too. As for the towel part, you are lucky, Champ grabs the towel and runs off wet, to tear it apart.

  • LOL! with the rain you'd think there was acid falling from the sky. my dog acts like it's the end of the world… i have to push his tooshy out and he stands there giving me "the look". the looks that just says ... "you suck."

  • I guess with the towel thing I'm lucky. They come in and stand at the door waiting for their feet to be wiped. Then they lick each other down. I also put shaving outside recently so it's funny to watch them. They won't go off the shavings to the other part of the yard!!!

  • Senji had a bad day today. The neighbor across the street had these 2 huge evergreens in the front yard. Whenever it would rain, Senji would run across the street to pee under the trees, because that was the only dry ground available. Today the neighbors had workers over that cut down those trees. Senji kept barooing at them to stop, but they didn't listen. I don't know what he's going to do when the next rain hits. I only have small evergreens in my yard and he can barely fit under them. Poor Senji has been moping all day! :(

  • Jojo will not go out if it is too wet like recently rained. The morning dew doesn't seem to bother her too much. She would run out to pee under my husband's boat but he moved it so now she has no cover. We have tried an umbrella but no good if it is raining. She just waits for it too stop.

  • oh gosh so sorry for Senji :( don't worry my Bs feel your pain Senji

I'm trying to convince my DH to install a tarp over a section of the yard where we keep wood chips for their eliminating needs.

  • Too funny! I have to push Dacia outside when its raining (or the grass is wet). She'll freeze in the middle of the yard like she's physically unable to move until you call her back inside.
Also when the snow started to melt, she was scared of the grass…like she'd never seen it before! She would only pee on the snow!

Oh, poor Senji! He prolly needs an extra treat or two to help him get over the loss and, more importantly, to get over somebody not obeying his request! :D

  • Yes! We thought the same thing. She won't go on the grass 2 days AFTER it rains. She'll smell it and make sure it doesn't smell wet. We've figured out that she will pee in the parking lot (it's a little wierd to be by a large area with grass and a dog next to it peeing on the pavement).

  • This is so funny:D Cali does the same thing when it is raining. We had heavy rain last night and she was whimpering the entire time I took her out. I put a puppy pad by the front door and she pee'd on the pad. Normally we stay outside and get drenched until she decides to go, but I gave in last night due to the storm.

  • I just came in from our before bedtime walk and guess what…it was raining. Sophie sets her ears at an odd angle and gives me that defiant "you are the stupidest creature I have ever met" look. Stick will walk okay for about half a block and then suddenly sits down without any warning and refuses to budge. Sigh. If only they were litter box trained!

  • I know lots of Basenjis that perfer to pee on concrete rather then grass.. we have both in the backyard, two of my girls alway pee on the concrete…. always have....

  • Abby will go out in the rain but only if her sister missy goes, missy doesn't care for water too much either so if she goes out abby goes out if not abby will stay under the overhang on the deck and pee right there. The other wierd thing abby does is at night she won't go out in the yard by herself she prefers to pee on the deck but if missy goes abby will too. Too funny they are!

  • Sometimes it's a blessing when it raines. Usually Chance takes foreva to do his business until it rains. Then I just open up the front door and he does it right there and jumps right back in the house as though the rain was acid. Hahahahaha

  • We got caught in a thunderstorm at the park one day and Abbey started jumping up and down like she'd stepped into a hot frying pan. It was bizarre. I had to pick her up and carry her home. She draped her whole self over my shoulder trying to stick her head down the back of my shirt to keep her ears dry. She dug her hind paws into the waist band of my jeans to hold on. Thought my pants were going to fall down! I had to haul her 2 blocks home like that. Anybody ever try to carry 22 lbs. of terrified basenji 2 blocks in a drenching rain with lightning bolts all around? I don't recommend it.

How true. I'm surprised no one has started Basenji Anonymous, LOL It's like pringles can't have one. Although I have just one now. I have owned Basenjsi for 30 years. I tell my dog loving co-workers about Kay-Dee's antics and they love hearing about her. She goes a lot of places with me and she has her own fan club.

The owls are very pretty and I also like the white one. We have a hawk after my birds outside that I would love to stuff never happen but I yell at him all the time. Rita Jean

Basenji seem to be the masters of the non-verbal put down. And I also agree with Basenji Boy's comment, reminds of that bumper sticker: the more I know of people, the better I like my dog. What is the correct plural of Basenji? 'Basenjis' or 'Basenji'? A Yodel of Besenjis?

I used to say my dog was aggressive until I read this thread… Now I say it is more of a defensive mechanism for Buddi. Buddi doesn't like anyone or anything to approach him. He wants to smell and get to know them or it first. If someone new comes into the house I tell them not to acknowledge Buddi at first and then once he has finished getting to know them he will walk away. After that he is fine. But if someone walks in and puts their hand towards him he instantly turns into a very loud and shows aggressive behavior like he is going to attack. The theory has worked very well to date. With dogs it is a little different. He also doesnt like small dogs. The ones close to his size or larger we have never had a problem. Should I handle the situations in a different manner? Also he doesnt go to a doggie spa or day care so we make sure to go to the park and keep him socialized with dogs there and ones that he knows. We also have friends with young kids and he loves them. Has never growled or snipped at them. He LOVES to play!!!!

@etzbseder: Luckily, at my parents house, their dog has put smudges all over that door, and Medjai just scratches at it when he wants in. (I know I shouldn't reward it, but he wants in). I had Medjai yelp once when jumping off the bed, which is strange because he likes to sit on my shoulders and has jumped off there to chase animals without a problem. Keoki scratches when he wants in – started when we taught him to ring bells that were hanging, but the bells have disappeared "literally", so now he just scratches. Drives my husband crazy, but hey! Jazzy just sits quietly and winds up staying outside far longer than she wants to because I don't know she wants in. Keoki jumps up and scratches loudly.. guess who gets first?
