• RIP my little man. Dogo Habari's Man in Black, Johnny passed away today at the age of 3. Johnny had bladder stones. The vet worked on him for about 5 hours but could not remove them all and the decision was made to take him out of his suffering. He had 25 stones and pieces in his bladder and another 7 stuck in his urethra.

  • Oh, the poor boy. He's not suffering now, and loves you for it. {Hugs for your loss - far too soon}

  • So sorry Arlene, I can't fathom (as Oakley is two) losing him at three. My heart and prayers go out to you. You did what you had to and didn't let him down.

  • So sorry to hear this. It's terrible to lose one so young.

  • Sad to hear of your loss, what a shock it would have been to lose one so young, it's never easy to make a decision. Just had our 7 year old cat come back with heart failure and with it comes decisions that I hate making so my thoughts are with you at this time. All the best.

  • How awful!!! Sounds as if he was in a lot of pain. Poor boy. I'm so sorry.

  • I am deeply sorry for your loss 😞

  • So sorry Arlene

  • Arlene I am so sorry.

Later, when you are up to it, can you talk about what caused them? If there is anything other owners can be on the look out for, etc.

  • We don't know what kind of stones they are. As soon as I know, then I will be able to be on the look out for what can cause them.

  • I'm truly sorry, Arlene. Such sad news! It's always heartbreaking to lose a dog, but to lose one so young seems so unfair. You're in my thoughts.

  • Oh how terrible to lose such a young boy. I'm sure he was miserable and you did right by him, but how very tragic. I am so sorry.

So sorry to hear of your loss of your little man. Never is it easy, but a piece of your heart may be loss now, but it will heal with all the joy he brought in his short time. Reminds me of a poem about dogs' short lives, Johnny was just that special:
    A Dog's Purpose?
    (from a 6-year-old).
Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker 's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting he old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.
Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, ''I know why.''

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. It has changed the way I try and live.

He said,''People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life – like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?'' The Six-year-old continued,

''Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.''

    Live simply.

    Love generously.

  • How awful to have to make that decision for a dog so young; it was the right way to go, and he is no longer suffering.

  • This was such a sudden and shocking loss. I am so sorry, Arlene.

  • I am sorry about your loss. Have you found out anything about the stones? I had a couple of related young female rescues who had a history of struvite crystals.

    Jennifer

  • I haven't heard anything as of yet. I will update as soon as I know something.
Thanks everyone, Johnny was my special little boy and I still miss him.
