Help with my old fart… literally

Congo is an 11 year old rescue from BRAT who came into my life this past July. he has a really horrible farting problem.

i had him on the nature's balance grain free recipe but his skin started showing a reaction. so i just switched him to innova and his farts are absolutely horrendous. should i get anti gas pills? should i switch his food again?? help :(

You should see a Vet. Has he had a fully check up lately?

as soon as i get a job, he is going to the vet.. but right now i'm unemployed and struggling with money so i'm doing what i can to take care of him myself. thankfully, i'm living with my parents again and my dad is supporting me. so if there was an emergency he would front me the money to take him to the vet. i have been keeping a close eye on congo and i'm sure it was switching his food to innova. :/

Sometimes gas is caused y an imbalance of bacteria in the gut. Try giving him a large spoonful of unflavored yogurt for a few days. The enzymes will get things balanced out. If the gas continues then there may be a bigger problem going on and a trip to the vet would be recommended.

If you switched him over suddenly to the innova, that could be the problem. I find that if they are used to a certain food, and then you suddenly switch it, it upsets their stomach and you get horrible results out the back end. If this is what you did, it may take awhile for his system to get used to the innova.

I swear by yogurt. Kipawa gets 2 spoonfuls of yogurt and he rarely lets out those wall melters. I also agree about changing foods. Do it very slowly over the course of 2 - 3 weeks.

thanks for the tips! does it matter what kind of yogurt? of course unflavored or original/plain. i will keep a close eye on the food situation.

Organic plain is the best.

I just thought basenjis were really awful farters! Oakley had puppy gas which was beyond words, while its not like that anymore it is still often and they can still knock you over, lmao. I isn't realize this could be a sign of a health problem…hmm

Don't ever get a Boxer, then! Seriously, farts tend to be worse on some foods, for sure. And some dogs definitely are worse than others in any case. But flatulence on a change of diet or on a new bag of the same food could be a warning sign that something isn't agreeing with the dog.

I use Fastrack liquid dispersible. Although the container is expensive, (about $44 shipped http://www.marvalstables.com/happybellies/what_does_it_cost.htm )
one canister should last you many months, I estimate about 6, with one dog.

Testimonial== had ROTTWEILER (ie massively more air and smell produced lol) who was so bad we would not let her even sleep in the HALLWAY. When we had a sick pony we put on the horse formula, I decided to try my dogs on the liquid dispersible. The gas stopped. Okay I know that it is very healthy, new studies on HUMANS show probiotics may have some really impressive results beyond just healthy digestion. But I won't lie. We kept it in stock to prevent Rottweiler gas.

Yogurt sounds good, but the daily cost comes to far more than Fastrack even if you get them on sale at 75 cents or less.
