Settling in to a new home again

Basenji Talk
  • Cody and I have moved yet again, and hopefully this will be our last move for a while. He seems to be settling in well, although he has taken a page out of Kipawa's book.. The imposter basenji! He has been very subdued lately, although it may be from the stress of the move and being separated from Moe. I think he may be just a bit depressed. He's been moping a lot and just laying around in the recliner I got from my dad (Dad, Moe, and Cody used to fight over it).He does enjoy being king of this particular castle and loves all of the new smells of the neighborhood. He did come out of his funk a bit earlier today when he played a game of steal and defluff the toy with me. I've been trying to give him lots of special attention and keep him entertained because I know this move have been rough on him. I think once we get completely settled in, he'll cheer up a bit.

I'm waiting on internet and cable to be hooked up, and then I'll post some more pics.

  • Moving is so hard on me too, so I empathize with Cody. Hope this is a long time home for you too.

  • Hope he bounces back to his old self soon.

  • That picture of his little self staring through the bars of the deck is such a cutie! King of his new domain. Hope you are both settled in and comfy with the new digs real soon.

  • we had our first move with Hope when she was just under 1 yr old. she had the blues for about a week or so. Sookihng and clingy but we just made sure we took her for more walks, and played awesome games in the backyard such as treasure hunts n stuff. Thankfully they come out of it - but its not something i want to do again LOL

  • Poor Cody! It was hard on Spencer (and me!) when we moved cross-country. At first, he would go and sit by the front door, waiting for someone to take him "home." I bought him new toys to play with and he would carry them to the door, sit beside them and wait. It took a few weeks, but he settled in. He still gets anxious when I bring in boxes, though.

I agree with Patty… it looks like they have known each other for a lifetime already! Isn't it wonderful when that happens? Such lovely girls! And I am so happy that your landlady has allowed you to have both of them. I think she deserves a wee Christmas gift. :D

I would suggest waiting until you get the little guy. Indi didn't have a name for abut 2 days. We had all these names in mind and none of them fit. Thats my two cents anyway (oh ya and because we did that I have a cool costume for him on haloween but I don't think I am going to get any cooperation on his end)

@tanza: Of course the problem you have with bringing home a puppy that is only 8 or 10 weeks, is that they really need to have 2 sets of shots before being in a public place… and also the fact that they will not be leash trained to be in a public area. That is why when I place pups with someone that has a adult dog, I have them come to my house. I put them in the back yard and then bring the puppies out... Puppies are too young to have "territorial responses" to the yard and it is a netural place for the adults..... works quite well .... I do however put up all my adults in their crates during that time.... beings that we live in the middle of nowhere (hahaha:D ) we dont have anywhere really dog oriented to take them to meet.. like i said previously we are surrounded by christmas tree fields, and my boyfriends aunt lives maybe 500 feet down the road on a farm, with a big yard and pasture.. so maybe that will be the best place to introduce them

Thanks for your replies. I've started giving Sonia Glucosamine w/ MSM every day and we'll see how she does. I'll give you an update in about a month and let you know if it's helped or not.

The only thing I would be concerned about with a Dachshund would be the possiblity of it having some back damage with the rough play of a basenji…or even trying to do the same acrobatics that Bs do. I have known some folks who had a lot of problems with disk and spine problems with Doxies...but I don't know if that is typical. Something to think about though...
