Two 26 pound dogs are a wriggling hand full to just scoop up Invisable fence owners, I find 90% of the time send the dogs out on their own without anyone watching them and NEVER walk them. I guess it's similar to us sending ours out in our fenced in yard, but we always keep an eye on them, keep the house's door sightly open (the girl opens the sliding glass door on her own if it's not locked). The problem is when strange dogs come into contact without one side being supervised. Our yard in the winter for those in New Mexico! You can see our fence in the Basenji exhibit/compound [image: path.jpg] Our neihbors dog, when close to the house, sees a car coming and charges fast as it can right to the curb, like it's going to run right in front of the car, then stops. The car usually slams it's brakes on, really upset!

how about their coats for camoflage…. I remember Beta who was a tri, laying in the sun near some florida pams and it was really sunny. One of those days when the leaves were bright but the shadows were really dark. I couldnt see her! She completely camoflaged into the scenery. I suppose the red basenjis can camoflage into a sandy setting?

When Cairo was coming into his manhood which was around the later part of his 4th month he began to try to dominate every dog (male or female) at the dog part. We were in the smaller dog pen, so there were plenty of smaller dogs for him to dominate. I recognized the behavior (not full mounted, but the arm on the back) and we didnt go back until he was fixed. Major difference. I would suggest going to a Petsmart and doing your normal commands there. It is so busy and loud there that you can practice getting his attention. Having an intact dog at the dog park is a big challenge. You dont want to take treats into a dog park in case some one else's dog is food aggressive and you have to feel confident you can pull his attention away from his interest when you want. I would think any kind of training that included socializing with other dogs would be a big help.

Shelby was startled once by deer while we were on a walk but she's curious about everything else, especially if Mom is there. Vince is a bit more fearful which is really funny because he looks more fearsome. He's very nervous of loud popping sounds like fireworks or cars backfiring but we joke that it's because he was in the mafia or a gang in NJ and is afraid of a drive-by.;)

Whenever Corky is in trouble for going in the garbage, grabbing something off the table or whatever, he instantly does his 'show me your belly' trick. He has us trained to stop lecturing him because he's so cute when he does that, we just can't help but rub his belly. :)

It really helped when we got our second dog. We did not have to constantly entertain the first one anymore. They are best buddies to a point. everyone gets a dog to snuggle with in the winter.

I wrote a song about their adventures here- http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=61431922 The little bumble bee noises are the dog's voice through a flanger. Our male catches them then gets all bit up by the squirrel, coverd in his own blood. They tease our dogs to no end. [image: lavbald.jpg]

@tanza: Things like biting behaviors.. just wanted to make a point that meds are for specific behaviors.. not a cure all Oh, I agree completely! They are definitely NOT a cure-all. IMO, drugs used for unwwanted behavior should only be used as part of a behavior modification program, especially when dealing with SA.

I think if you have a cat that sleeps with your basenji and plays with it, you are very lucky indeed. I would have loved that. Mine were okay for the most part but they were a lot happier and responsive when the basenjis were outside and they were with mom.:p

I too am a proud owner of a rescue basenji! I stumbled across his picture on petfinder one day and said to my boyfriend Brian there is a basenji at Pet Orphans (all breed rescue in Van Nuys)! So we went over for a visit and he looked a little ruff on the edges under weight, dull coat, a little dandruff, puppymill"ish looking and about two years old. I was a little apprehensive at first, Brian on the other hand feel in love the first second. He said to me I have had basenjis for years now and I know this one is special. We took the little guy home and the rescue was hassle free we didnt have to deal with twenty million questions or home checks it was great. I beleve there is a basenji lover working there because after I have noticed they have had a few other pure B's and cute B mixes. We knew we were in love with how cute he was but we never imagined how well behaved, sweet, and easy going this little dog turned out to be. From the B's that have been in the family, one from a pet store, two from breeders, and our rescue the rescue has been the best behaved, best temperment, and the most well rounded out of them all. Everyday He puts a smile on my face and joy in my heart. I love my rescue.

@felakuti: our felakuti goes barooooooo when he is very very happy. :) we decided to get that little female basenji at Debbie's Petland, the one with the 5 toes..We have named her Queen Nyahbinghi after a warrior queen of the 19th century in Uganda…her call name is Nyah. :) so now we have two lovedoveys. :) Good luck with your pup….. hopefully you got her for a reasonable price... I would be interested to know if AKC papers came with her... and what the breeding is, if available.... also would hope that with the time she spent in the Pet Store, this will show them that a Basenji is not a good business decision.....
