What tricks your Basenji has taught you?

Basenji Talk
  • My naughty Tri color male goes around the house looking for any tiny bits of celephane, foil wrapper, metal staple what ever he should not eat. He comes up saying "I'm going to eat it, I'm going to do it", swishing it around in his mouth with him popping the object out once in a while.

He has me trained to give him a treat in exchange for the tiny object.

If I try to get it from him he runs away, I can't catch him, if I ignore him he eats it.

He tried it with my wife, she totally ignored him, he just dropped it and walked away. I tried the same and he ate it!

Remember consistancy is key, they know this as well.

  • Wow, our dogs love cellophane too. Especially the little windows from envelopes.

  • Whenever Corky is in trouble for going in the garbage, grabbing something off the table or whatever, he instantly does his 'show me your belly' trick. He has us trained to stop lecturing him because he's so cute when he does that, we just can't help but rub his belly. :)

@planetsaver said in Basenji for me or not ?: Will be a problem to leave him alone, let's say 10 days / month an average of 9 hours a day. Also I do not want to have to much trouble with the neighbours, but I understand he can make some noise sometimes, maybe he can be trained to stay alone and not to bark that much. Why would you even think about training a hunting hound to stay home alone ? I would never let my Basenjis alone for more than 4 hours, and even that is very rare. 3 hours is absolute maximum. Like @tanza, I have sold puppies into apartment environments as long as all other boxes ticked positive. Someone there all the time, proper attention to training, not just leaving the dog alone, especially not as a puppy. btw, he won't bark at all. As you would know if you had really researched the breed. He will cry and scream but not bark ! No. At least you are asking questions but I really think you should find another breed.

Looks can be so deceiving- here is an article of a woman who adopted a rescue dog in N.J. Dog looks like a basenji - even her vet thought it might be basenji. She did an Embark DNA test - no basenji. Turned out the dog was a mixture of Mountain Cur, Rat Terrier, Beagle, and Boston Terrier. link text

Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol

@Elscodobermann: Tilly does the same trick. Only she smacks poor old Humphrey dobermann on the head repeatedly if he is (in her opinion) closer to the fire than her - and only stops when he moves… Good job she wasnt around to try it with some of my previous dobes - we would have had basenji mince... Maya does that too! Except we dont have the luxury of a nice fire (i miss that! ) so its usually when someone is sat where she wants to be, or if she has scoffed her chews down too quickly and decided she wants someone elses, that sort of thing. The labradors just give into her but Delilah the pug is very much top dog (noones told Maya that though lol) and has put Maya in her place on more than one occassion! Thank god for Lilah, i'd actually have to TRAIN the basenji if it wasnt for her
