Have you been on the Basenji Club of America website? There is a listing of breeders that you could contact and many will place a pup in Mexico. It is a good site to visit and become familar with health concerns in the breed and also how to find a responsible breeder. www.basenji.org By the way, your English is very good.

Thank you so much for your advice. We just e-mailed a member of the bcosw. :) basenjimamma, Thank you for that :) We had thought of that, as we have researched quite a bit, and are going to definitely make sure that no one is allergic before we take one home.

@dmcarty: Understanding however that breeding carriers to clear is the option that allows to include the widest genetic diversity. Breeding only clear to clear reduces the diversity in the population - shade of what happend to the breed during some of the other health concerns like HA, PRA and Malabsorbtion. Hopefully we learned that throwing the baby out with the bath water is not the most effective way of keeping valuable traits while eliminating health concerns. +1…I could not agree with you more!

I am the Texas District Coordinator for BRAT. I have been trying for several days to contact you regarding Lucy, but a filter is blocking my email address. Due to long work hours and various other commitments, telephone communication is difficult at this time. Please email me at crazybasenjilady@yahoo.com to discuss. We have a volunteer lined up to retrieve Lucy from your home at your earliest convenience. Cynthia Castro BRAT Volunteer Texas District Coordinator Portland, TX

@Varanus: I'm so sorry this is working out like this, but I'm really glad you got him out of his bad situation. I'm from rural Ohio (though in CA now), and I know what those shelters can be like. I also know what it's like to realize that a rescued dog really isn't going to get along with another member of your pack–if you recall, I had to send a really sweet basenji mix to rescue when the resident Airedale tried to eat her. You did a really good thing, though, and Mowgli will find a good place to grow up into a fantastic dog. 'Dito'- Well said, truely Andrew, you have done a wonderful act of kindness, and I pray that your act of kindness will come back to you when you most needed it as Mowgli apparently needed it …...Maybe you were only meant to get Mowgli out of there so he could end up where he suppose to be... @dwilliams: Sorry for inconvenience-Updated website profile, accidently lost half while doing so, but her number is HP31186401- I guess My mishap has lead to paperwork being too recent to show up. And meant to respond to this earlier, depends on who they go to and specifics on spade/neuter & AKC 'limited'. Was this a planned breeding? Only reason I ask is that she is pretty young (only 1 1/2yrs) to be bred. And thanks for the AKC number. You might want to send the information to Sally for the pedigree site, since seems she is not there yet. Who is her sire and dam? http://www.pedigrees.zandebasenjis.com/search.html

Last year, we put Kona in her crate while we put up the Christmas tree. While she liked to lay under it she never went after any ornaments and only chewed the branches once or twice when we weren't giving her enough attention. We will see what happens this year with two of them…However, Keoki is so good he probably won't be phased by it! Good luck puppy-proofing...it is an ongoing process for sure!

I agree with education being the ultimate solution, however with the way americans are today, education will not work. We tend to only listen to what we want to hear and when we hear something we don't want to hear we ignore it, and still proceed with what we were recommended NOT to do. When the decision backfires we can always "dump the dog, cat or whatever have you, in a pound somewhere and the decision is no longer ours to worry about". In Europe we don't even have this option, at least not in Sweden ( at least not when I checked last, a while back) It is called accountability..Very few average people living in America know what accountability is..there is always somebody there to take care of messes being made. I wish there was a way to not have so many dogs roaming the streets, and being put down on a daily basis, it is absolutely heart breaking, education will help some, but it won't stop it. In my honest, humble opinion.

@Janneke: I would just LOVE LOVE LOVE to add a Basenji, but I study.. I would like to have some time off when the new pup is here, so it should come here like.. NOW (my vacation of 9 weeks just started :D).. Haha.. As we all now, B's get puppies when I'm in the middle of my 'school year'.. Ugh.. I have some nice breeders on my list :D ;) Your Shmi is also from Sweden right? Tillo is as well :) But we are going very 'off topic' in Fibula's thead. Sorry for that Fibula!! Yes, sorry :) Janneke - I wrote on your wall…
