Looking for Basenji

Basenjis For Sale or Wanted
  • So I am from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. A guy I work with is looking to buy a basenji and he's down on finding any in Alberta. So I was wondering if anyone knew of any breeders in the Alberta area, even neighbouring provinces would probably be alright. I'm not sure if he cares whether or not it is pure bred. If anyone knows, please let me know. Thanks so much !!

  • I don't know of any breeders in AB. There are a couple in BC and some in Ont. There are a few illigit ones out there who don't do any testing-I wouldn't go there. Check out the BCOC site.

I'm in Ontario and I will ship dependant on circumstances. If he would like to talk to me let me know and I will send you my website info and he can contact me through there. I will be breeding a litter this year and I know of a few others as well.

  • Has he had a Basenji before? If not has he done his research on the breed first? Go to the Basenji Club of Canada site http://www.basenjiclubofcanada.com/ and look in the Breeders Directory link.

  • He has never owned a Basenji before no, but he has researched them. Thank you for the info. I will talk to him.

Oddly enough, there is another person in Spain needing to rehome their Basenji puppy. The fellow's girlfriend does not like dogs. The topic is "Basenji puppy for adoption (Spain)" and the guy is @Luc21. Hope you can contact him.

We have had our Basenji boy for just over a week. He came to us from Belarus to UK from a wonderful breeder who gave us lots of information, support and contact while we waited for him to be able to travel.[image: 1621799551369-received_507687556937191-resized.jpeg]

All pups have been placed as responsible breeders have reservation lists. We are not at this time planning a litter for 2020 or 2021. I would be happy to talk to you about Basenjis. You can search for responsible breeders at www.basenji.org by state, however as far as I know all responsible breeders on the West Coast already have full reservation lists. You would be looking at litters possible in 2021. This is the time to connect with a responsible breeder and get on their reservation lists for 2021. And if you are looking for a dog that is hypoallergenic, Basenjis do shed and have dander so they are not really hypoallergenic. While they can do well with people with allergies, you need to spend time with them and more than one time. Be sure that you check out health testing yourself, regardless of what you might be advised. Tests for DNA testing is public knowledge at www.ofa.org. You need to have either a registration number or name to check this out for yourself to verify. I suggest all people looking for a Basenji, even my own, do this.

I would never sell a Basenji puppy as a potential Christmas Present ! (and I don't know any responsibile breeders who would either) Presents often get the wrapping torn off and are then discarded - how about waiting until after the festive season when things have calmed down and you have time to cope with the exigencies of a new puppy ? Tanza's idea of giving a photo might work but a live puppy under foot on Christmas Day, among all the relatives and parcels - No.

@helle-devi Thank you for responding. I have already been in touch with the basenji sisters. I was not aware before I contacted them that they are located in CA. I think the distance between us is too great. If things didn’t work out between my basenji and one of their girls, the distance would be a problem. I did become a member on the Facebook site that you recommended. Thank you so much! I was unaware that such a site existed. Jo Ann

If funds are an issues, you can do what I used to do before BRAT came along. Find out the vet of the family your placing him with, have the family pay you for your expenses and then take the dog to the new familys vet for the surgery to be fixed. Drop the dog off the day of the surgery and then new owners pu the dog. They get to pay the bill. That makes sure the dog is fixed, sets up a new vet record for the new dog in the family, and you don't have to pay anything out of pocket. Mostly, you know the surgery WILL BE DONE. Thanks for making sure he is fixed before rehoming. That is so important.
