Basenji Needs Home By THURSDAY **urgent in Central OK**
-
My friend has a 2 1/2 year old Basenji female who is showing aggression issues. She growls at his roommates dogs, bit him this morning when he was playing with a toy with her and she growled at his roommate. She came from a not so great situation. She was left outside in a pen with another dog and came to ME covered in seed ticks and dirt. I gave her to him because he wanted a dog and because my leasing office wouldn't allow me to have 2 dogs here. He is threatening to get rid of her by Thursday if she doesn't straighten up. She is home with his roommate all day and if she gets bitten by his dog it could cause problems. Any home he gives her to could send her to the pound if they get bitten. I dont want to see her go to the pound to die. I do not have pictures of her but she is a tri color. VERY beautiful. She DOES have some sort of rash on her chest from her previous home. Im posting this for him in hopes maybe someone can help. He doesn't want to get rid of her but may have to due to him not being home enough to correct her behaviors. Hes tried about everything and ended up getting bitten this morning. Give me a call if you are in Oklahoma and can help. 580-917-8135

Finding a home in 2 days is a little ridiculous to expect from anyone. Try contacting BRAT. www.basenjirescue.org

I second what Dash said, contact BRAT

This poor Basenji sounds like it's had it rough and is going to take some work and that takes time. You can't expect some over night change. Did you just get her? It takes time for a dog to just acclimate to a new environment and people. You'll probably need the help of a dog behaviorist.

Yeah I contacted them. I dont want to see him get rid of her and possibly her end up at the pound. Im waiting on BRAT to contact me back. Shes a good dog but needs work and I told him he MUST be patient but hes worried his roommate will get bitten when hes not home and when she is in her care.
-
Good, lets hope they contact you before anybody, human or dog, gets hurt.

Yeah I know. Shes good with me and never bites me but I cant keep her here. Im not allowed to keep 2 dogs at my apartment She came to me in bad shape. I intended on keeping her but then got told I couldnt so he took her. She was covered in seed ticks and dirt and has a rash on her chest from a reaction to the ticks. She was left outside in a pen. I took her to the vet and got her shots that same day and gave her a good bath. Anyone know of anyone who could take her if BRAT doesn't contact me soon? just in case he gives her away?

Really your best option is Brat, being that they know the breed.

Okay thanks. I contacted someone from Oklahoma and just waiting for an email back.

Did you fill out the rehome a basenji link- http://basenjirescue.org/post.htm
or did you just email someone listed on the website, like a state screener? If you emailed someone and havent heard back yet, I would fill out the form on the above link with as much info as you have on her, and you should hear back. I would state you are facing a short time frame.. -
Ever think its a health issue causing her aggressiveness?

That's right. Could be in pain from something or a low thyroid. Should get a full blood work up done.

Yeah Im still waiting on a contact back. My friend said he can't afford a vet visit Neither can I or id do it. I just took MINE in for a wellness check so I cannot afford another vet visit. She just needs out of his house and into a good home. I still cant believe hes only giving her till thursday to straighten out. he has NO patience.

As I suggested to you when I contacted you by phone, you might approach your leasing office and see if they will temporarily allow you to keep the other dog until rescue contacts you. Have you done that yet? I also suggest that part of the problem is that the other dogs this guys girlfriend has might be part of the problem as some dogs are very territorial. If the Female Basenji feels threatened by the presence of the other dogs or is being treated harshly by the guy that has her or his girlfriend then she could be reacting to that. Keep in mind that both the Guy and his girlfriend have the smell of his girlfriend/roommates dogs smell on them.
From what you told me this dog has only been with them 4 days and now it being treated as unwelcome by both the guy and his girl. Also from what you said they are both fearful of the dog. The dog senses this. What I am saying here is very important because in the short time the dog has been present there is a pecking order being established for dominance in the house.
You mentioned you had absolutely no problems when you had this dog the first day before you released it this couple. So if you really want to help the situation then ask your leasing agent at your complex about keeping this other dog on a Temporary basis. That would be more helpful than posting and complaining that the fellow you gave her to is being unreasonable. Also from what you told me about the situation it is not healthy for the dog or the people involved for the Female Basenji to be left in that situation because it can escalate. You were able to keep it for a day before, so go get it and keep it another day and maybe in that time Brat will contact you. If the dog behaves for you, then maybe your leasing office will not find out you have her again unless you tell them. If it was worth the risk the first time you did it, it should be worth the risk the second.
You said this dog was also AKC registered and had papers. Get the papers and make an attempt to contact the breeder.
One of the other things you could also do is talk to the Vet you deal with and explain your money situation. It is possible that your Vet might let you take the dog in now for examination and allow you to pay them later. You will have to ask them to find this out.

Could you have the dog boarded somewhere that you could visit her regularly until BRAT has a chance to get something lined up?
-
When I spoke with her tonight there is no question the dog is in a bad place. BRAT is really the correct place for the dog it has had a awful start in it's life and needs love and security. My understanding had a home and then it was sent back then those people left it outside. Then she got the dog and now her freind. The poor thing must think life is awful and no one loves her. I hope BRAT can get in there on this one.
