I wonder why they don't have their full names, a contact phone number, or any information on health testing directly on their webpage. I always thought a legitimate business would have that information?

I'm sure you've already seen this since you've done the research, but for anyone else who stumbles upon this page in the future, this is a link discussing how these people (at one point….albeit awhile ago) were charging extra money for health testing...too much money for basic health testing....which was pretty strange :

I'm glad they've changed their ways though according to you. I'd maybe encourage them to change their website…as it gives people the wrong idea in my opinion.

He is definitely a cutie! Great to hear he is doing well in the crate. Our Loki still does not tolerate his well, but Kaia doesn't have problems. They've been in the bed with us from day one. Made potty training so much easier, we all bonded incredibly quickly, and I never move as fast as I do at 2am when someone starts heaving….

Eldorado does litter box train and they were always very successful at it when I visited..I know they line the outside of the box with newspaper too..so I would make sure to do that also so she's as familiar with the process as she can be. I would suggest if you can't get her to start using it for pooping soon to just get her a coat and start outside. The longer she goes without pooping where you want her to the harder it'll be when you need to change it. Bad habits develop fast. I wish I started Oakley outside right away versus litter training. He always would pee in it but he wouldn't poop in it. He got very used to pooping next to the box on the kitchen floor and to this day prefers going on hard surfaces. I know it's hard to imagine potty training outside in this weather but you might be better off in the long run.
I'm not against the litter box, I also have an eldorado pup; I just know the entire process would've been easier and more beneficial to is both if I braved the weather and did it in the first plAce

I always ask people whether they like cats. I tell them a Basenji is a lot like a cat in a dog's body. They're smart, know what you want, but prefer to please themselves rather than you. Then I give them my tag line (which I use for Arabian horses as well) 😉

Amen to that! A bored basenji is very creative in its destructiveness, although the dog only thinks he's having fun.

Recommend joining one of the local basenji clubs/groups for meetups and play dates. What part of California are you from, lots of CA members on the forums and Facebook.

We are originally from MA but now in SLC, UT. My B's have always been on Heartguard meds and we do it all year long and I have my B's test every two years. Results have always been negative. My 6 year old male B (Grady) started having seizures 6 months ago (summer 2013). We immediately went in for blood work and a vet check - no significant findings. I've been watching them more closely now and try to document everything I can…food intake, toxins, weather conditions, what happened that day of a seizure, stress triggers, etc. Grady has had 5 seizures and they are spread out since last summer. The seizures usually happen when we are asleep at nite and luckily only last a few secs to a minute or so. I want to AVOID medications for as long as I can and have started him on vitamins/antioxidants to increase his immune system. He is still a fun-loving goofy crazy dog otherwise. We were on Heartguard plus (chews) years ago but then converted over to Iverhart Plus for the past few years. Both my dogs have been on it but Grady has the seizures and my 13 year old female B hasn't show signs of seizures. She is going through the senior dog stages ... like more whitening near her nose, slowing down, getting sore easily, etc...but no seizures. I'm thinking that the "ivermectin" in the Inverhart may cause seizures and if this is the case...perhaps Grady has become very sensitive to this med since he has been on it for most of his life....I need to take him off of it and try something else for the heartworm prevention. I'm still hoping I can find out the cause of his seizures. Anna

As to nail clipping: we find that enough walking on road surfaces keeps their nail perfect.

Congrats on your puppy…. has he (or his sire/dam) been health tested for Fanconi and PRA with the DNA test? Very important this if this has not been done for his Sire/Dam that you have your boy tested. And even if they have been tested, never hurts to follow up with having him done also.

Welcome and congrats on your new addition! I'm no expert, but I would re-think neutering early. I would wait until the growth plates fully close and then neuter him. And I would not say that the breed is susceptible to attacking, though Basenjis can be reserved and cautious with strangers. Most are confident, loving dogs, when socialized. It's always good to keep an eye out for problems, however, and address any aggressive behaviors before they have a chance to escalate. Good luck with him!
