Thanks for all the replies to my question. :-) I'm glad to hear that other B's have them and I like the response that says the pinks spot is a good place to give a kiss :-)

The more exercise you can give the dog, the better she will be. Walk her at least an hr 2 times a day… A basic obedience class is also required to help her learn her manners. Good luck.

I have to say there are some folks in the midwest who 'sound' like they are ok but are not - if you want to email me off list happy to provide references for lots of reputable b folks. dmcarty100@yahoo.com

Hi all - I am not a basenji owner, although my next door neighbor fostered and then adopted the most adorable one - named Joey!!! I actually found your site by googling to find out what happens to unsold puppies at a petstore, and low an behold, I ended up here. Anyway, I read through everything posted here, and saw that there were several people very concerned about the pet store experiences that they had (I believe one was Stella from Cleveland Heights) - so I googled to see if there was a place that would allow you to report the kind of hideous abuse she is talking about - 68 - 250 puppies dead in such a short time - heartbreaking. AND - there is!!! Here's the link: http://www.petstoreabuse.com/cando.html Please take the time to follow the steps to report problem petstores… it is one very strong thing we can do to stop these stores from continuing their horrible practices. No animal anywhere should ever have to suffer that treatment. And please, please - send this link on to your animal-loving friends. I think so many of us want to do something, but don't know if there is anywhere that will listen - here is a place that WILL. Thank you so much, and keep on loving your beautiful dogs! :o) Tara

Sophie is one who definately thinks that the standard reads "a goof with strangers". She loves meeting and greeting people and dogs though she has learned how to be dog appropriate and is not a push over. She wags her tail so much it is no wonder is is only a loose single curl, how could it be anything else with it in constant motion. We do a lot to socialize all of our pups so they are outgoing and confident but there is a definate distinction between some of our pups who would probably be considered "Aloof" though they are friendly and like attention from strangers, they always make you feel like you are attending court for royalty and Sophie whose dream job would probably be a greeter for WalMart.

Try making whatever you are stuffing in the Kong really easy to get out at first and then work up to harder and harder things to get out. Puppies have short attention spans so at first the game has to be pretty easy. Maybe at first you stuff it with some yummy kibble or treats, mine love Evo, and then a little seal of peanut butter so he licks off the peanut butter and hits the jackpot of his breakfast or dinner. Then you can work up to putting in some string cheese, micrwaving for about 20 seconds and then adding the kibble so it gets kind of glued in there. For expert Kong unstuffers you do the cheese thing and treat thing then fill with water and freeze.

I'm in the "I've had dogs chip teeth on them" camp too. And the "It hurts like he77 when you step on them" camp. And they stink.

I named my baby, Africian Queen Sahara, from the Sahara Desert, and the famous movie Africian Queen, and because she is the color of the Sahara Desert.

Good luck to you…I really mean that. :) One more thought on this... The most important people in my life are not just "yes men"...they can see when my judgment is clouded by emotion. We might not like what people have to say, but if you step back and look at comments objectively, you'll see that they are meant to help and to give a reality check. The senior members on this forum have HUGE EXPERIENCE...they have great advice, even if it hasn't always been what I've wanted to hear. Please...please...read lvoss' post and then read it again. To me, that is the clearest explanation as to what the danger is by rushing in.

@Vanessa: The pup won't be coming home till at least 11 or 12 weeks. We are in the process of moving into our new house and don't want to bring a new pup into that environment. We want the painting finished and our furniture in first :) Maybe this is a good thing then…Chance has been picking on our cat and treating him like a chew toy. The cat does not mind and I think he actually enjoys it (my cat is odd) but now Chance will know how it feels to be picked on. Our poor cat  You might want to then see if you can get a collar over to Leightons to put on your girl so that she gets used to it…..and yes, Chance will get a "taste" of his own "medicine..."...:D

I'd be {almost} satisfied if s/he took a simple spelling class, and passed, of course. Apon? Apon? What does that even mean? LOL

Many years ago we were up in the Adirondack MTS (Old Forge) I was walking 2 B's on a leash and we would go by a chainsaw statue of a bear - my dogs did not like that bear - we were there for several weeks and nothing much changed - they gave that statue a wide berth! On another note I once had a Great Dane who chased cars BUT only if she was IN our car. We had a Chevy Blazer and she would dive for the back of the truck barking when another vehicle went by. I swear the truck would rock - it was funning but rather onsafe.

Experience also tends to be a good screener. When my wife and I walk She-Ra in the park, adults get really attracted to her and see the way she plays with their kids (she's GREAT with kids), and they start asking question about the breed. They're really big on the whole "barkless dog" concept and I'll usually go into a little of the history (one of the oldest breeds, seen in heiroglyphs, not too common until recent decades, etc.), but I have yet to let any of them leave without telling them the other side of the story - they're high energy and high maintenance, they exist to test your patience, will shred/chew anything you leave out, you WILL walk them every night, particularly when they're young, etc. - things we all LOVE about our B's, but potential new owners might not be aware of and may not find as endearing. My wife gets on my case for talking too much about them to strangers, but I tell her my big worry is that someone comes away from the conversation thinking "Barkless dog" and uses that as their criteria to pick one up. They aren't for everyone, and there are days (few and far between) we both scratch our heads and wonder why we didn't just get a bassett hound (joking). I try and impress that on families who see She-Ra and fall in love on the spot…

Oh and by the Way, that is not just what the entry Fee is used for… Superintendent takes almost the entire amount these days. Not much left to contribute to anything else.....
