@sinbaje: This "tender knot" is a localized reaction to the vaccine. It should go away on its own but can take a while; upwards of 8 weeks or more. Those of us in the vet field consider this "normal" but one has to wonder. I would certainly let your vet know for future references that he had a reaction to the vaccine as the next reaction (if he were to have one) could be more serious (ie hives, swelling, etc). Benadryl would no longer be effective. That said - you could ask your vet about pretreating with benadryl prior to injection to help minimize any possible future reactions. You could give orally an hour or two prior to exam. Talk to your doctor re: proper dosaging and exact timing. Best to just leave it alone and let his body deal with it. To add: Vaccines are given in different areas of the body. The most commonly known is that Rabies is given in the Right Rear. So that if a reaction such as a lump is formed due to the vaccine, the doctor will know which vaccine caused the reaction. It would be safe to give benadryl before each vaccine as to not take a chance but it should be known which vaccine will give a reaction to that animal.

@YodelDogs: If you are positive one parent was a pure Basenji and the other parent was a pure Dachshund then she cannot get Fanconi Syndrome. I'm pleased to hear that. I have a B cross and I was wondering about Fanconi with her.

What difficult news to hear. But it sounds like you are all prepared to spoil Cinnamon and make her feel special. She will be very thankful.

Mine don't drink much either and this has always been very commonn with Basenjis as you know. To encourage mine (who're fed raw) I give them a watery drink after every meal -I do things like mix in a little vegetable water, the rinsings of tins which had contained food of any kind, the rinsings of yoghourt pots and all sorts of tastes and I find that they will drink all of what I give them . In fact when two of mine were staying with friends they were puzzled by the way they just stood waiting after they'd had their meal. They wanted their 'milk shakes' as my friend calls it! I 'm glad to hear that Buddy is doing well and hope he continues to do so.

And in the end, just treasure your time together and give him the best care you can.. which to me sometimes means just keeping them comfortable…. that is the best any of us can do...

All my dogs are protected by homeopathic nosodes for Parvo and although it is a most horrible infection I do also know that the homeopathy offers the best chance of a cure. Dogs conventionally vaccinated against Parvo have been known to contract it but I wouldn't panic about this outbreak yet. It could be that these are unvaccinated dogs. I'll contact Irene in case she would like to make the homeopathic treatment known and also to find out if she has founf out anything more about these cases.

Just as a note, we had a Carrier bred to a Clear which produced 8 puppies. The testing on the puppies found 1 Carrier, 1 Clear, and 6 Indeterminate. According to Jon Curby, the rate up til now has been about 5% Indeterminates - but this breeding produced 75%! As Kathy said, the statistics are for individual puppies, not for entire litters… Terry

Job wise, so far so good. We won't have a final notice until the week of the 5th. Fingers crossed they don't eliminate my position, although with 14 year under my belt I have enough seniority to bump someone else. I'd hate to do it but all districts are 'pinking'. There will be no openings in Illinois. Plus my district won't pay out accumulated sick days so I'd be giving up almost a year of retirement in sick pay alone. Fingers crossed. In the mean time, I'm enjoying my spring break, catching up on some reading, and watching my 2 beasts nap the day away on the sofa:). Looks good!! I might just join them:D.

I just talked to one of the geneticists working with this group yesterday at the ACoD. They are also looking for bitches who had mammary tumors. If I understood correctly they may also consider other cancer types if they can get 60 dogs of the same breed with the same type of cancer.

I would suggest putting some A&D Ointment on it. Medjai had a problem with a rash type thing between his legs for over a year before I tried A&D and now it's gone. I've had him on good food, and tried different things from the vet and nothing worked until now.

I've only just read this post as I was away for a few days. I couldn't agree more with Tanza about substantial and bladed bone. The UK standard calls for fine bone which is interpreted by some to mean 'weedy'. As Tanza says it is not all black and white. After all the term 'fine' is open to individual interpretation. I had a look on your website Tanza and agree that Maggii is very feminine and has good bone.

Also what kind of filter are you using? We use the allergen filters by 3M and they do make a difference for husband who has had allergies all his life.

Advantix does not take care of heartworms. It is only a flea and tick repellent. Frontline works the same way. About K9 Advantix K9 Advantix? offers 5-way protection. The one that repels and kills ticks, fleas and mosquitoes also repels biting flies and kills chewing lice, providing protection from more pests than other topical products. Does your dog love the water? No problem! K9 Advantix? is waterproof. Studies have shown your dog will still be protected after exposure to water (i.e., bathing, swimming or rain). For optimum results, use a non-detergent shampoo when bathing your dog http://k9advantix.petparents.com/aboutAdvantix.cfm As far as others you can use that I know of in Texas for heartworms. There is Heartguard this is one of the oldest ways of prevention and seems to be plenty effective as long as you dont skip more than 3 monthly doses your dog should be protected (this is true for most prevention). But heartguard is labeled as Ivermectin. I know we use the liquid ivermectin on our bunnies so i wouldnt see why it would be a problem for dogs? i would ask a trusted professional for their opinion. Heres a little about sentinel What is Sentinel? Sentinel Flavor Tabs kill the immature form of the heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis). They also control adult hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum), and remove and control roundworms (ascarids - Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonina) and whipworms (Trichuris vulpis). In addition, Sentinel Flavor Tabs break the flea life cycle Sentinel as far as fleas only sterilizes the adults it does not kill them http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=1460 Interceptor Luckily, it's simple to protect your dog from internal parasites with INTERCEPTOR? (milbemycin oxime) Flavor Tabs?. INTERCEPTOR Flavor Tabs are the only oral monthly preventive that protects against four parasites all at once. INTERCEPTOR Flavor Tabs prevents deadly heartworm disease, while it protects your dog against adult roundworms (Toxocara canis,Toxascaris leonina), adult hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum) and whipworms (Trichuris vulpis). http://www.interceptor.novartis.us/dog/en/about.shtml At our other clinic my doctor recommends Iverhart For years, dog owners have protected their pets from heartworms, roundworms and hookworms with IVERHART PLUS? (ivermectin/pyrantel). Now, IVERHART MAX? (ivermectin/pyrantel pamoate/praziquantel) takes this powerful, proven treatment to the next level to give your pet the most complete protection available against heartworms and roundworms, hookworms, and now, tapeworms. IVERHART MAX? is formulated with the trusted actives veterinarians have prescribed for years in one convenient chewable tablet. http://www.iverhart.com/ Some combination preventions (take care of fleas and heartworms such as sentinel) would be off the top of my head…Advantage multi, and Revolution(more common for cats) Symptoms of reactions I have seen: hairloss, vomiting, skin irritation and usually these are fixed by switching preventions Overdose symptoms have been known to cause vomiting, diarrhea, trembling, seizures, and respiratory problems Sorry for all the reading. And there may have been things I forgot (like Pro-meris) but I hope it helps ALSO: dogs should be heartworm tested before they are put on any type of Heartworm Prevention as this can create problems for your pup. As far as ticks, There is also a lyme vaccine that can be given to your animal for disease control.
