This just came to me from a friend who breeds Keeshonds. It is of interest to anyone who has a pure-bred dog affected with any of the cancers listed in the study. Peggy

    Subject: FW: [keeshowbreeders] Cancer Research

Permission has been granted to crosspost:

The Van Andel Research Institute, a world class human
    cancer research
institute, recently received a Federally fund grant through the
    National
Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute, to study five
    types of
cancer that occur in both dogs and humans. The ultimate goal
    is to develop
improved diagnostics and more individualized therapies for
    both canines and
    people.

We are requesting the help of purebred dog owners, who may
    own a dog
affected with one of these cancers. The five initial cancers we
    are studying

    are:

    1. Hemangiosarcoma
    2. Lymphoma
    3. Osteosarcoma
    4. Malignant histiocytosis
    5. Melanoma of the mouth or toe

We are requesting fresh (NOT in formalin, NOT frozen) tissue
    samples from
tumors, when pets have biopsies, surgeries such as
    splenectomies, or are
euthanized. Samples may be collected post mortem, as the
    euthanasia
solution does not affect the DNA in either the dog's blood or in
    the tumor
    cells.

Additionally, if you have a dog with one of these cancers who
    has already
been treated (splenectomy, chemo, etc), we would still
    appreciate a blood
sample along with a histopath report confirming the diagnosis.
    We need 3-5
mls of whole blood in an EDTA (purple top) tube. It can be
    sent priority
mail, and blood can be shipped at room temperature.

If the pet is scheduled for surgery or, sadly, euthanasia, if you
    or your
veterinarian contact us ahead of time, we can FedEx a
    collection kit which
includes an overnight FedEx return shipping form, along with
    collection
    media and containers.

Owner consent forms and veterinary info pages can be found
    on our website,
    at:

    http://www.vai. org/helpingdogs

I will be happy to answer any questions I can, as well. Owners,
veterinarians and researchers working together will help us to
    unravel some
of the mysteries of these nasty diseases.

  • hi tanza i dont know what happen with my computer but it didnt let me reply to ur message.

  • I just talked to one of the geneticists working with this group yesterday at the ACoD. They are also looking for bitches who had mammary tumors. If I understood correctly they may also consider other cancer types if they can get 60 dogs of the same breed with the same type of cancer.

My Senja was diagnosed Jan. 18, 2014 with diabetes. After over 2 months on insulin and more tests she was still getting worse, losing weight, not eating and vomiting orange stuff. I took her to a more advanced Vet/Hospital and she had more test, x-rays and an ultrasound. The new vet found a large mass connected near the bile duct and pancreatic duct going to the stomach. He said it couldn't be removed. I tried some meds including the insulin for a few days then quit them all. She hasn't vomited and has been eating various foods and treats. She is still very thin and is now drinking lots of water. I'm wondering if I should give her insulin again if it would do any good. I know she doesn't have much time left, I just want her to feel as good as possible. I have a pain medication suspended in a gel to give orally when or if she seems to need it, but hasn't so far, it will make her sleep a lot. Guess you all know how heartbreaking this is and part of me wishes I would have gotten the second opinion right away in January.

@lvoss: The reason for the differing information is because of the differing organizations that do testing. I am not sure about testing in Australia but in the US there are two different organizations that do hip testing, as far as I know only one that does elbows. OFA the organization that does both hips and elbows in the US requires that the dog be at least 24 months old before they will issue a registration number but you can get a preliminary evaluation after 12 months of age. PennHip which I believe is more like the system in Australia, does their hip evaluations as early as, I believe, 4 months old. Actually, OFA will do a preliminary eval as early as four months of age…but you can't get a published preliminary rating until 12 mos; and as you stated no OFA number until 24 mos.

@BasenjiByTheBay: Thank you all for the help translating this info. Yes, I think we will register her with the project and have her tested. My impression was that there had been no testing. The woman we got her from had never heard of Fanconi and I haven't found anything on the breeder- except now on Sally's site, where he just seems to have Fiji's Sire and Dam. This forum is so incredible! So sad the people out there that don't know about the health concerns in a breed and just sell for profit… but you can learn about them at www.basenjihealth.org or www.basenji.org Chances of you finding anything out about the breeder would be slim, I would think…..
