      Just a note here.

      Fish Oil vs. Flaxseed Oil

Flaxseed oil contains more Omega-3's than fish oil. However, the Omega-3's in flaxseed oil are in an inactive form (ALA). Special enzymes are required to convert the inactive ALA into the active forms (EPA and DHA). Some animals, especially carnivores like dogs, do not have the required enzymes to do the conversion.

Recent research shows that fish oil has more positive benefits on pets with disease, because the fatty acids contained in fish oil are readily available for use already in the converted form EPA and DHA. Particularly, fish oil has positive effects on dogs with inflammatory diseases, such as allergies, arthritis, kidney and heart disease, and cancer. Flaxseed oil does not seem to be as beneficial to dogs with inflammatory diseases.

However, flaxseed oil seems to be anti-cancerous, and is also effective in improving the skin and coat conditions of dogs.

Flaxseed oil can be a dietary source of soluble fiber. Increasing soluble fiber in the diet can help counter tendencies to constipation.

Fish oil, therefore, is the preferred fatty acid supplement for dogs with inflammatory diseases. Flaxseed oil can be used to improve skin and coat conditions, and to counter constipation and perhaps inhibit cancer growth.

Also flaxseed turns rancid quite quickly after it's ground up so it's best if you can grind only the amount needed and store the seeds in a glass jar in the frig.

Hah! Basenji500 - I love it! Paco's been doing it ever since we got him, I just didn't know it had a name. 😛 Our apartment is built like a train, just one long line of rooms, so he loves to fly up and down, jumping off furniture the whole way.

We ran a cable between two trees in our long driveway, and use a d-link to attach an extendable leash to it so that we can play fetch outside whenever he gets a little to antsy.

My first question is why are you bathing her every two weeks?
Is she roling in manure or something else with a nasty stench?
I have 4 basenjis in my house.
Two that are going on 2 years old:
One bitch was shown in early July… she was bathed that weekend.
One bitch was shown back in March.... she was bathed in late March.
The two 5 month old pups were bathed in mid-August for the first time.
I don't have grass in my yard.. just pine trees and weeds and wood chips...
which means they are in dirt all the time.
I wipe them down with a hot wet towel when they come in...
      but that is it.
I must preface this with the fact that I HATE DUST AND DIRT of any nature to touch me.
If they were dusty, I would wipe them down.
But bathing them every two weeks?

HECK NO. That is why I have basenjis... I am not a groomer,
and hate dealing with grooming... bathe for shows, and very little else.
And my dogs are CLEAN to the touch....

Perhaps you should bathe them a bit less often and use a super good scrubber to scratch out the dead hair…
that should be enough I'd think....
of course, I am coming from the point that I don't have dogs that get an undercoat... so perhaps it is quite different.
Please don't take offense at what I suggest... I just can't imagine having to bathe a basenji that often.

      Woofless

I've never taken a "puppy kindergarten" class, but all of the Obedience classes I've ever signed up for with an adult dog, give people the option to show up with the dog on a flat buckle or choker-style collar.

Most trainers I know start off from scratch with everybody on a buckle collar & modify their approach for each individual dog, based on behavior patterns & problems that arise. All dogs are different & a trainer simply can't expect one approach to work for all the dogs in a group class!

In any given group you're bound to have dogs like Basenjis who resist & shut down when given harsh corrections….and high-drive, hard headed working-type dogs who respond to praise BUT also benefit from a well timed collar correction. You won't get anywhere trying to train a Basenji with the same methods you'd use with a Ring sport Malinois....

Personally, if I ever decided to use a "correction" collar on any dog, it'd be a prong collar. It's just about the only tool that REALLY helped me work with my Boxer & her over-reactive issues. Properly fitted & properly used, a prong only requires light "fingertip" corrections and is actually easier on the dog's trachea than a "choke" collar.

However, I wouldn't choose to use ANY "correction collar" on a Basenji....and wouldn't enroll my pups in a class that required their use. JMO

The article I read on ginger said they started taking the ginger capsules 2 days before chemo and of course used regular meds during the chemo, but their ginger group had less nausea/vomiting than the placebos. Maybe the trick is to start early!

After a long time I've learnt to trust my Basenjis (but not I should add all my dogs). They also spend some time in digging for roots which I always assume are for medicinal purposes as the oldest part of our house has the remains of an ancient herbal garden.

Our sheep also do the same!

Thanks…She is a doll. She is extremely active and keeps me hoping because she does not have siblings.... I had her at the park yesterday and we ran and ran. She was so tired last night I couldn't get her out of the crate to go outside. Finally...I wore her out.

      @Gabriel:

I have a small travel type crate that I put Noel in while we are away from home and at night. she is 14 weeks. She is really getting to big for this. What types of crates do you keep your B's in? I am looking at a medium size cage type kennel. 30L x 19W x 21H inches
I want to be sure she has plenty of room to lay down in it. What is your advice?

i got a crate big enough 4 a large dog. like a lab or something simular. I had 2 get the travel crate because in a wire crate she would pull things into the crate and eat it. comforters rugs you name it. She even ate her bed. fluff everywhere.

Well it looks like we are all kind of spread out but semi close. I'm sure we can come up with something there is a dog park in Normal over by Normal Community West High School. That is some what centrally located. Like I said Abby has never been around another B so it could be fun for her. I know she get snippy when she is around big dogs!

I have those two books, they are very usefull-unfortunately the girls don't read them. Our daughter will stand there crying while Pharaoh bits her feet having a great time. In the mean time I am screaming at her to yell ouch and put him outside. She dwells on the unfairness of it.
Really, he is a very good puppy-even for a regular dog.

      @Gabriel:

Yesterday on another thread I read how someone takes a squirt bottle of water and does a quick spray when she bites and then says no. I tried that on noel and it worked perfect. I just have to grab that bottle and she goes and lays down. She hasn't bitten me once today. I know it will take more than one evening to train her not to bite but I will be patient.

The problem with this method is that Noel will not learn to soften her bite so if she ever does bite it will probably be with full force and result in serious injury. Though it takes longer to train, it is much better especially with young children in the house to use the method described in the link given in the other thread.
