  • Looking for a new home for my girl
    G Gabriel
    18 Jan 2012, 18:27

    I have a three year old red basenji who I need to find a new home for. Due to unforseen circumstances, I am not able to give her the time she needs. I want her to go to someone who loves and understands basenji's. She is very active and very smart. She needs to be with a single person or a couple who can dedicate the proper time to her. I live in Illinois. If you know of anyone looking please contact me so I can get in touch with that person.

    Thanks!!

    Hi rachel,

    I am looking to find a home for my basenji. Her name is Noel and she is 3 years old. She is a very good girl, lots of energy and very sweet. She knows basic commands. She just needs more time than I can give her. My recently had to take on my 6 month old granddaughter so Noel ends up spending tons of time in her crate. If you are interested you can contact me at my e-mail address jwlznewview@hotmail.com. I live in springfield IL.

    Thanks for the suggestion. i never thought of using fish oil. I wonder if I could give her a tablet by mouth? I will also keep brushing her and using those baby wipes.

    It was bedtime a couple nights ago and I had just put Noel in her crate. I turn off all the lights and sat down in the family room and turn on the Television. All of a sudden I hear a noise that sounds like an instrment playing from noel's room. I look at my husband and say…Was that Noel. It was the most beautiful noise. Unfortunatley I have not heard it again.

    We recently rescued a chihuahua. We have Noel who is a 16 month old Basenji. This chihuahua (named Bean) is so scared of Noel. bean will growl and try to attack Noel constantly. noel is so good with Bean. She will come close while bean is growling and as bean tries to bit, noel will move her face away and then back and away….I think noel is trying to show bean that she does not want to hurt him. Anyway...now I've got to try to work with bean and agression but Noel is awesome with him.

    @tanza:

    Is she AKC (American Kennel Club) registered. Have you checked her pedigree on Sally Wallis's site - http://www.pedigrees.zandebasenjis.com/

    I have never seen a Basenji bitch that large and I agree with lvoss, she is certainly not overweight.. As lvoss said I have seen males that are large and 30lbs. My OJ was in good show weight 29lbs

    Strange….I put the name of Noels mother and nothing came up....There was zero matches.

    Is attacking your arm and lets normal behavior? I have tons of chew toys but she will just attack me at any time.

    I am very interested in learning about different sports my B can get into. She is extremely fast and I think with some training she would do well. I live in central Illinois so I'm not sure exactly what I need to do to get education.

    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Here is a picture of Noel. She seems very large…she weighed in at 30 lbs at her last vet visit. Anyone else have a big girl like her?

    Thank you for for the great advice. I'm sure she needs more exericse. Right now we have quite a bit of snow so it is hard to run outside (for me). Plus it's been like below zero to 7 degrees outside. Very dangerous temps to spend a lot of time outdoors. It is suppose to melt this weekend and warm up so I plan to get outside a lot more often. I will keep you posted.

    My basenji is just crazy. the bad thing about it is my husband crates her all the time now. She just turned 13 months old. She is very active and she is big. She weighs 30 lbs because she is very muscular. She will do fine in the house and then she snaps. She will run like she is having a race…jumping on the back of funiture, flying through the air, running fast and then she attacks you as she is running. she is very hard to control. When she starts that, I simply grab her collar and take her to her crate.

    anyone have suggestions???

    Thanks for letting my know my girl is normal. I do bath her once every two week and I brush her once a week so I wasn't sure if I needed to do anything else.

    My basenji, Noel, is shedding like crazy. Every day around her cage she has tons of hair on the floor. She doesn't seem to be bald anywhere so I'm not sure what's going on. I didn't think Basenji's shed like that.

    Any thoughts?

  • Play Biting is getting out of control any ideas?
    G Gabriel

    @tanza:

    I have never used the crate as a "time out" place especially during early crate training as I feel that this can backfire and have them associate it with punishment. That said, I will admit that I have not had just "one"… there has always been other B's in the house, so even when they get wild and border line out of control... and I ignore them, they "turn" on the other B's... who promptly put them in their place...ggg

    I guess my Noel just doesn't have the correct training because you can't just ignore her. She will tear you up if you turn your back on her. She will jump as high as she can go and bite you in the back, bottom and ankles.. I put her in her crate to get her to "calm down". I also give her treat when she goes in for "good". When it's bed time, when I'm leaving for work, things like that.

    @FortheLoveofStella:

    I said this to someone else who said that their B pup was being aggressive toward her young daughter. But this seemed to work with Stella when she was little. She would get soo excited during play, that even if I yelped she would stop for a second, but then come back after my feet, ankle, pant leg - what ever she could get her mouth on. So to help her calm down a little, I would hold her down to help her relax. Once she was relaxed she could get up and go about her business. We never her told her no, just yelped, and if she didn't stop, we would restrict her movement.

    When Noel gets excited like this and won't listen and is aggressively biting and scratching, and if I tried to hold her down(which I have) she would bite, kick, scratch, anything to get out of it. Finally, I should have to man handle her and put her in her crate. What a stinker.

  • Small Chocker collar
    G Gabriel

    I just signed Noel up for obedience school. She starts next Tuesday evening. The lady that teaches the school shows dogs and specializes in agressive behavior. She just informed me that she uses small chocker collars in the school. I'm not sure how I feel about that.

    Does anyone else use these? Is this normal?????
